REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Strong upcoming earnings results could reverse the decline in mega-cap technology and growth stocks, which have been hammered by the rise in Treasury yields and are trading at their cheapest levels in six years by one measure, according to Goldman Sachs strategists. At the same time, the group is expected to post sales growth of 11% in the third quarter, compared with a 1% improvement for the S&P 500, the firm noted. The S&P 500 has dropped nearly 5% over the last 10 trading days but remains slightly more than 11% up since the start of the year. "We expect the S&P 500 to rally into year-end, with more upside in the equal-weighted index," Subramanian wrote.

A major benchmark for U.S. stocks — the Russell 2000 index — turned negative for the year on Monday, an indicator of broader weakness occurring in the economy that's being masked by a few large cap tech equities. Lending is also often more difficult for small cap companies versus larger cap names, which are can negotiate lower lending rates. The Russell 2000 has higher sector weight in financials, which makes it more leveraged toward interest rate conditions, said Bespoke Investment Group co-founder Paul Hickey. "So if you put all those factors together, I wouldn't say that the Russell 2000 is a canary in the coal mine. The strategist believes that easing pressure on interest rates should result help the small cap index bounce back from its oversold period.

The Wall Street sign is pictured at the New York Stock exchange (NYSE) in the Manhattan borough of New York City, New York, U.S., March 9, 2020. Seven megacap stocks -- Apple (AAPL.O), Microsoft (MSFT.O), Alphabet (GOOGL.O), Amazon (AMZN.O), Nvidia (NVDA.O), Tesla (TSLA.O) and Meta Platforms (META.O) -- have led broader markets higher this year. Their rising stock prices ballooned valuations, however, and some investors say the megacaps could be vulnerable if climbing bond yields keep pressuring stocks. "When the big tech stocks start going down ... the indexes go down," said Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak. Still, strategists point out that the rise in implied volatility for tech stocks is no more than for the broader market.

A shutdown would disrupt government services including the publication of major U.S. economic data such as keenly-watched employment and inflation reports that can move equity and bond markets globally. "If the government data releases are suspended, this will increase volatility and decrease visibility, in a time when forecasting is already difficult," said Clifton Hill, global macro portfolio manager, at Acadian Asset Management. Hill said that investors would have to make assumptions based on survey and non-government economic data that is available. Key government data releases due over the next two weeks include jobless claims, unemployment and inflation, which influence monetary policy. Peter Vassallo, a foreign exchange portfolio manager at BNP Asset Management said delays in economic data "is unfortunately just something that we have to deal with as it comes."

Call option Rather than buying 100 shares of Apple at $180 each for a total of $18,000, you use an options contract. A single options contract always represents 100 shares. So with a call option, you get upside exposure with defined downside risk that is limited to the option premium. So, your $200 "investment" (the premium to buy the options contract) nets you a $200 profit. You are covered for all losses beyond the strike price with the break-even being the strike price, less the option contract premium.
