Now, the inverse has happened as stocks rally, inflation steadily falls, and the labor market stays healthy. By any historical measure, this is still a really strong labor market," he said. "There's a lot of market concern — understandably so — about the sustainability of the strong labor market," Porter said. This time, Fitch is intent on signaling to the market that bank downgrades, while not a foregone conclusion, are a real risk, said Wolfe. And if top institutions like JPMorgan are cut, then Fitch would be forced to at least consider downgrades on all their peers' ratings, according to Wolfe. Shares of lenders including JPMorgan, Bank of America and Citigroup dipped in premarket trading Tuesday. JPMorgan declined to comment for this article, while Bank of America and BankUnited didn't immediately respond to messages seeking comment. Defaults tend to rise in a rate-hiking environment, and Fitch has expressed concern on the impact of office loan defaults on smaller banks.

The $70 billion company’s struggles, and the incoming chief’s credentials, set the stage for a transaction of some sort. He also spearheaded its $12 billion purchase of marketing service Mailchimp in 2021, which could augur a deal. And an operation like PayPal’s could help CEO Mark Zuckerberg challenge potential cage-match opponent Elon Musk and his super-app ambitions at X, formerly known as Twitter. Given PayPal’s massive slump, Chriss will be under pressure to restore the luster, or to slot it into another company’s wallet. In 2021, he led the company’s $12 billion acquisition of Mailchimp.

Swiss bank UBS agreed to pay a combined $1.4 billion in civil penalties over fraud and misconduct in its offering of residential mortgage-backed securities dating back to the global financial crisis, federal prosecutors announced Monday. The cumulative recoveries in the cases now total $36 billion, according to the Justice Department. UBS' settlement is nearly the same as the value of the residential mortgages it originated between 2005 and 2007, the year it stopped issuing residential mortgage-backed securities. UBS originated $1.5 billion in residential mortgages in those three years, the bank previously said in a 2018 statement challenging the Justice Department allegations. "The vast majority of loans underlying the 40 RMBS listed in the complaint were originated by other financial institutions," UBS said at the time.

REUTERS/Aly Song/File PhotoAug 14 (Reuters) - Turmoil at China's largest private developer Country Garden could set off a "vicious cycle" of financing stress on the country's real estate investment trusts (REITs), brokerage J.P. Morgan warned on Monday. These fresh worries come as Country Garden sought to delay payment on a private onshore bond for the first time and suspended trading in 11 onshore bonds. "The default events may lead to a chain reaction on developer financing, adding stress to POE (privately owned enterprise) developers and their creditors." Rising trust defaults would drag economic growth by 0.3-0.4 percentage points directly, J.P.Morgan warned.

The warning is a "prelude to an ultimate credit event," paving the way for debt restructuring, per JPMorgan. Country Garden racked up 1.4 trillion Chinese yuan, or almost $200 billion, in liabilities at the end of 2022. It also faces 7.8 billion Chinese yuan, or $1.1 billion, in payments for notes and bonds in September. Another analyst feels Country Garden could restructure if it's unable to raise cash in time. Deutsche Bank analyst Imron Zafar estimated Thursday that bariatric surgery accounts for about 5% of Intuitive Surgical's U.S. robotic surgery business, but has been driving much of the company's growth. Some of the surgeons Zafar spoke with said any drop off in bariatric surgery was likely to be offset by increased use of the robot for other procedures. But they expect the drugs will remain necessary because GLP-1 drugs have yet to show they improve fibrosis, which is associated with NASH.

2023's blistering stock rally is under threat, according to a top JPMorgan Asset Management strategist. The impact of banking chaos could soon start to weigh on stocks, David Lebovitz said. Ahead of Thursday's inflation report, Lebovitz also commented on company margins and whether sticky costs will weigh on firms' pricing power. "When we look at the consumer, the consumer looks fine today, but the consumer is beginning to bend. That's going to undermine the pricing power that's allowed a lot of these companies to keep their heads above water," he added.

The Dublin-based company said this made it the first online betting operator to turn a profit in the U.S and it did so six months ahead of schedule. Analysts at JPMorgan also noted a more cautious outlook on Australia, where Flutter's first half revenues fell by 1%. The U.S. profits contributed to reported EBITDA of 765 million pounds across the group, versus the 731 million pounds forecast by eight analyst polled by Refinitiv. Flutter and broadcaster Fox Corporation (FOXA.O) said last month it would close the FOX Bet sports betting platform. That would eclipse the record full year earnings of 1.4 billion pounds Flutter posted during the COVID-19 online betting boom of 2020.

Moody's warning this week about the credit worthiness of more than two dozen banks has created a buy-the-dip opportunity in shares of regional lenders, according to JPMorgan. The credit rating agency downgraded the ratings of 10 regional banks on Monday evening, and signaled concern for about 17 more. But JPMorgan analyst Steven Alexopoulos said in a note to clients on Wednesday that those concerns are already priced in to bank stocks, and regional bank stocks now have upside from current levels. That means that many bank stocks look cheaper today than before the downgrades, Alexoloulos said. JPMorgan's top picks among regional banks include New York Community Bancorp.

The analysis found that the fully remote companies in the study had head-count growth rates over double those of fully in-person companies. The findings were released against a backdrop of many major companies requiring employees to return to the office full time. This push may lead thousands of Americans to look for work at more flexible companies to avoid expensive commutes and childcare. The study found the average company requiring in-office work asked staff to come in just over 2.5 days a week. Over the 12-month period, fully flexible and structured-hybrid companies grew their workforce by more than double the rate of full-time in-office companies.
