Thirteen research monkeys were on the loose Monday after an additional five of the 43 primates that escaped from a research lab in South Carolina last week were captured unharmed, authorities said. The discoveries on Monday — first there were three, then two more — mean 13 of the Rhesus macaques remain outside the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center in the town of Yemassee, South Carolina. In a statement, the Yemassee Police Department cited Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard for news of the day's discoveries. Over the weekend, Yemassee police said 25 of the escaped monkeys had been captured safely. Last week's escapees were described as very young Rhesus macaque females weighing just 6 to 7 pounds and, as yet, unexposed to research.

The CBOE Volatility Index , known on Wall Street as the VIX, helps traders track when a market rally is actually unhealthy, said DataTrek co-founder Nicholas Colas. Monday's close for the VIX around 15 "is a healthy sign" for the temperature of the market as it advances, Colas wrote to clients. To put it succinctly: "Rallies built on an elevated VIX signal a bubble," he wrote. That's a lesson market participants learned, during the dot-com bubble of the mid- to late-1990s, he said. In the current bull market, dating back to the fourth quarter of 2022, however, the VIX has been largely "well behaved," Colas argued.

Miller was a powerful White House aide in Trump’s first term, authoring much of his most fiery scripted rhetoric as a speechwriter. Yet despite these draconian visions, there’s uncertainty about how far Trump will go in his deportation program and whether it matches his dystopian speeches. Many Democrats and Republicans could agree on Trump’s vow to start by deporting criminal undocumented migrants — the easiest part of his plan. Trump’s critics and vulnerable undocumented migrants, however, will find little in the president-elect’s new staff picks to offer them comfort. In every incoming presidential administration, staffing is important and provides ideological clues to how a White House will act.

BEIJING — China's Singles' Day shopping festival saw consumers spend more than expected in what has otherwise been a tepid retail environment, consulting executives told CNBC. "I do think for many brands it probably will have turned out a bit better than they thought, but on a low level. Probably nobody would say we hit it out of the ballpark," said Chris Reitermann, CEO of Ogilvy APAC and Greater China. Many multinational corporations that sell consumer products in China are more cautious on the market, if not struggling, Reitermann said. But he pointed out many of the companies are still "very profitable" in the country, even if their growth has slowed to the low single digits, instead of high double digits.

Such a scenario would entail higher inflation, higher rates, and falling stock prices, Roubini predicted. "That's going to crowd economic growth, and bond yields above 5% would imply a correction of stock prices and negative impacts on the economy." AdvertisementOther experts have warned some of Trump's policies could lead to higher inflation and interest rates, with his tariff plan attracting significant criticism from economists. Some of Trump's policies — like his plans to loosen regulation — could prop up business activity and fuel growth, Roubini noted. Jones was found guilty of defamation by juries in Texas and Connecticut for using his Infowars megaphone to falsely claim the massacre was a hoax. But if “bad guys” buy Infowars, as Jones put it Monday, he’ll “keep broadcasting until they show up” after the Wednesday auction and shut down the fringe outlet.
