As state lawmakers have introduced hundreds of bills targeting transgender people, particularly youths, over the last few years, Americans have rarely been able to hear from those most directly affected — trans youths themselves. They wanted to ensure the group was diverse because the trans kids and their families who are often featured in national reporting have been predominantly white. “American Teenager,” which debuts Tuesday, also features religious diversity, challenging the common misconception that being trans conflicts with people’s religious faith, Lang said. For example, Ruby Carnes, who was 19 when Lang spent two weeks with her in Houston, attends an Episcopalian church with her family who identify as Evangelical Christians, Lang said. Some of the young people Lang spent time with describe how gender-affirming medical care has affected their lives.

A 74-year-old Colorado man was injured in his home by a black bear after the animal and its three cubs opened a partially cracked sliding glass door, authorities said. The attack Thursday in Lake City was the first bear attack in the state this year, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The man who was injured responded by grabbing a chair and trying to direct the bear out the door, officials said. The sow and her cubs were euthanized after confirmation of their involvement in the attack, officials said. Last year, six bear attacks were reported across Colorado, according to Parks and Wildlife.

New York CNN —The window for a final 2024 presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris is closing. Harris has accepted the invitation and welcomed the chance to debate Trump again, but Trump has rejected her calls. On Tuesday, CNN stepped up the pressure by writing to both campaigns and setting a Thursday deadline for a formal response. Harris tried to capitalize on her performance at the ABC-sponsored debate in September by immediately challenging Trump to debate again. (In fact, the CNN date is in line with final debates of other recent election cycles.)

There might be another listener in the room at your doctor's appointments now or in the near future: ambient AI. Ambient AI is a technology that records and automates transcripts of conversations in real time — like a scribe. Over 15,000 patient visits were conducted "using this type of ambient AI technology to augment the documentation," he says. Seliby Perkins is prepared for patients to either decline the use of ambient AI during their visits or have a lot of questions about how it works. Prior to implementing ambient AI at TGH, the hospital set up an AI governance group with physicians, ethicists and experts in compliance, risk, privacy and security.

The CDC’s Principal Deputy Director, Dr. Nirav Shah, said in a news briefing on Friday that these cases were not a surprise. AdvertisementLike Woodman, millions of Americans travel abroad for medical procedures each year, saving anywhere from 40% to 90% on the services they receive. Medical tourism comes with risks; the American Medical Association recommends going only to medical facilities recognized by international accrediting bodies and following up testing with care at home. It's unclear, though, how many medical tourists visit accredited facilities, and there's still the question of whether all these tests are useful for someone who is seemingly in good health. Related storiesSince COVID-19 came into the picture, health screenings and extensive physicals have received some buzz. As more people spend time abroad, it becomes easier to tack a few small medical tests onto your trip.

CNN —The 2024 Nobel Prize in physics has been awarded to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for their “foundational discoveries” that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks. Mimicking the brainAI has become shorthand for machine learning using artificial neural networks. Whereas the brain’s neurons communicate with each other through synapses, artificial nodes influence each other through connections. You can train an artificial neural network by developing stronger connections between the nodes, just like you can train the brain. Did you know that an artificial neural network is designed to mimic the brain?

CNN —Neuroscientist Chris Nowinski has said he wants the NFL to investigate the apparent head injury suffered by Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen during Sunday’s defeat to the Houston Texans. Allen’s head struck the turf in the fourth quarter after being tackled and lay motionless before being rolled over by his teammates. The QB came off the field and was directed to the sideline medical tent, where doctors assess players’ injuries. After emerging from the blue tent, Allen appeared to be offered smelling salts, which make players feel more alert before going onto the field. Allen said in his postgame press conference that he “felt good enough to go back into the game” after the incident.

The Georgia Supreme Court on Monday reinstated the state’s six-week abortion ban while it reviews an appeal from the state of a lower court ruling that had struck down the law. The state Supreme Court's decision, however, left in place the lower court’s ruling blocking a separate provision of the law that had given state prosecutors broad access to the medical records of abortion patients without due process protections. The state's near-total abortion ban, known as the LIFE Act, was signed by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in 2019 but didn’t take effect until July 2022, after it faced a legal challenge and the U.S. Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade. Last week, a judge in Fulton County, Georgia, struck down the state’s six-week abortion, allowing the procedure to resume and almost immediately making it legal up to 22 weeks of pregnancy.

Blood pressure readings may not be accurate unless a person’s arm is positioned correctly, a new study suggests. “There was a chance that arm position was not important,” she said. The blood pressure cuff should be positioned at mid-heart level. To learn whether arm position made a difference in blood pressure readings, Brady and her colleagues recruited 133 adults, 78% of them Black and 52% female. “There is a pretty significant difference in blood pressure readings depending on arm position,” said Kamath, a cardiologist at UCLA Health.

Two American scientists were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology on Monday for their groundbreaking work on how genes behave. Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun discovered microRNA, which the Nobel Assembly describes as "a fundamental principle governing how gene activity is regulated." The tiny microRNA molecules play a crucial role in determining how different cells — which have the same chromosomes, essentially their instruction manual — have different characteristics. "The answer lies in gene regulation, which allows each cell to select only the relevant instructions," the Nobel announcement said. But subsequent work, including the discovery of another microRNA in 2000, proved that there are more than a thousand genes for different microRNAs in humans.
