The Chinese hackers also targeted people affiliated with the Harris-Walz campaign, another source familiar with the matter told CNN. US officials informed the Trump campaign this week that Trump and Vance were among a group of people whose phones were targeted by the Chinese hackers, one of the sources said. In a statement, Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung attacked the Harris campaign for allegedly emboldening China. The activity is part of a much broader Chinese hacking campaign that has infiltrated multiple US telecommunications firms in the last several months. US officials have briefed members of the House and Senate intelligence committees on the Chinese hacking campaign.

Here's how the process could work and what Wall Street bankers stand to gain. AdvertisementAs third-quarter earnings demonstrated, Wall Street dealmaking appears to be bouncing back after three years of lackluster activity. Spokespersons for both Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley declined to comment or confirm their reported participation in the project. The two investment bankers – neither of whom are affiliated with Goldman, Morgan Stanley, OpenAI, or Microsoft — requested anonymity to preserve industry relationships. Largely speaking, however, Wall Street is poised to win, Roberts said.

CNN —NASA Administrator Bill Nelson on Friday called for an investigation into a Wall Street Journal report that SpaceX founder and Donald Trump ally Elon Musk and Russian President Vladimir Putin have been in “regular contact” since late 2022. Musk also held his own town halls last week in Pennsylvania, where he urged voters to support Trump and promoted several debunked conspiracy theories about the 2020 election. The two have publicly discussed a potential government role for Musk. In recent days, Musk also offered splashy, $1 million daily sweepstakes for swing-state voters that has drawn scrutiny from the US Justice Department. Despite a warning from the Justice Department that the payments might be illegal, Musk’s super PAC awarded two $1 million prizes to registered voters in Michigan and Wisconsin on Thursday.

The record shows that Mr. Trump often pursues his stated goals, regardless of how plainly they lack legal or moral grounding. For this reason, Americans would be wise to see this language as a genuine threat, not simply Mr. Trump on a tangent. Why You Should Believe Him As president, Mr. Trump repeatedly sought to use the power of government to punish his political opponents. But rules can be rewritten, and Mr. Trump has made clear that he intends to pick officials who will take orders from the Oval Office. Mr. Trump would have broad authority to pursue such a plan, though he’d need Congress to provide a lot of money.

Ulf Mauder/picture alliance/Getty ImagesMany observers fear the ruling Georgian Dream party will resort to anything to stay in power. This year, Georgian Dream pushed through a Kremlin-style “foreign agent” law, which critics say aims to shut down watchdogs who call the government to account. She described some of the statements made by Georgian Dream officials as a “copy-paste” of those from Stalin’s show trials. ‘Soviet mentality’A question puzzling many is why the formerly center-left Georgian Dream has made a sudden authoritarian pivot. Joining the EU would require cleaning up the country’s judiciary and giving up power if Georgian Dream is voted out on Saturday.

South and North Korea troops potentially entering the Russia-Ukraine war is unlikely to stoke a wider conflict between the two Korean countries, experts said. The U.S. on Wednesday confirmed that North Korean troops had been sent to Russia. "The messaging we are seeing is likely intended to deter the actual deployment of North Korean troops to Ukraine from Russia. But that will depend on how the North Korean troops are deployed, she added. "In such a case, South Korean troops would be shooting in self defence, thus limiting the nature of such combat encounters."

Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, appeared to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in people with Type 2 diabetes, according to a study published Thursday in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia. Another study, published in August, found that semaglutide appeared to cut the risk of dementia in people with Type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for dementia and Alzheimer’s. An army of Chinese-controlled social media bots is attempting to influence voters in Alabama, Texas and Tennessee while denigrating Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, according to research published Wednesday by Microsoft. The troll network has “parroted antisemitic messages, amplified accusations of corruption and promoted opposition candidates,” according to Microsoft. The bots amplified support for Blackburn’s election rival while spreading claims that she took money from pharmaceutical companies. Moore, McCaul and Blackburn are all running for re-election next month. The Microsoft researchers found the influence effort did not result “in high levels of engagement.” The report did not provide any metrics for how many Americans viewed the relevant social media posts.

Since its founding in 2010, DeepMind has focused on building AI that might solve some of the world's stickiest problems, as varied as the climate crisis and protein folding. Last year, Google, which acquired DeepMind in 2014, folded the group in with the unit responsible for creating the transformers AI model breakthrough, forming what DeepMind's chief operating officer, Ibrahim, describes as "the engine room of Google in the AI era." As head of operations, Ibrahim is not only helping guide Google DeepMind's pursuit of artificial general intelligence, but she's also led several internal initiatives to use DeepMind's research for consumer applications, including several partnerships to bring AI education to schools. Dover on Thursday reported weaker-than-expected third-quarter results, pressuring shares of the industrial conglomerate with ties to AI data centers. Dover Why we own it : We own Dover as an industrial turnaround story with exposure to mega-themes, most notably the data center buildout to support artificial intelligence computing. That created headlines that implied Dover cut its full-year guidance, but in reality executives warned in advance that sales growth and earnings projections would be altered. Dover considers those areas its "growth platforms," and their increasing share of the portfolio carries positive implications for Dover's margins.

The new national security memorandum, issued in the final months of Biden’s term, seeks to strike a balance between deploying AI’s powerful potential with protecting against some of its fearsome possibilities. For example, the document prohibits use of AI to skirt existing protocols around deploying nuclear weapons. Revealing the new parameters during a speech at the National War College, Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan framed the stakes of managing the rise of AI. Biden administration officials believe rapidly developing AI tools will set off new competition between world powers. While largely developed in the United States, countries like China are swiftly applying the technology in military and civilian settings.
