On one side of the border crossing between Egypt and Gaza sit more than 100 trucks packed with desperately needed food, water and medical supplies. On the other wait more than 2 million Gazans now scraping by on dwindling stocks of basic human necessities. Officials and aid workers on Thursday were hammering out the logistics of opening the gates, saying that a U.N.-led deal had laid the groundwork to allow trucks carrying humanitarian aid to enter Gaza from Egypt, offering the renewed promise of relief to the besieged enclave. Aid organizations were told that the crossing would open on Friday morning, according to an aid official who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The deal, officials said, includes the U.N. flag being raised at the crossing and international observers inspecting aid trucks before they enter Gaza.

The sun sets behind power transmission lines in Texas, the United States on July 11, 2022. The Biden Administration is putting almost $3.5 billion into improving the strength and resiliency of the United States' electric grid, government officials said on Wednesday. The investments in the electric grid will get more than 35 gigawatts of clean energy onto the grid, the Department of Energy says. "Right now, the U.S. electric grid is the largest connected machine in the world. "Every time you turn on a light, charge your laptop, plug in an air conditioner or put leftovers in the fridge, you rely on the electric grid, and that grid has been in need of upgrade for a very, very long period of time," Landrieu said.

NEW YORK (AP) — Errol Morris has just sat down with a reporter when his wife calls. The film, which opens Friday in select theaters and on Apple TV+, is based on le Carré's 2016 memoir of the same name. AP: The central, mysterious metaphor of le Carré's, “The Pigeon Tunnel" — a tunnel that funnels pigeons to shotgun-wielding men — looms throughout the film. Morris: I’ve often compared the writing to a Kafka parable, except John le Carré wrote it. I say to (le Carré) at some point: “History is chaos.” And he agrees, “History is chaos.”

CNN —When Hamas militants broke through the Gaza fence in this month’s unprecedented attack on Israel, the kibbutz of Mefalsim – less than two miles from the border – was on the front lines. That precision, local Israeli security personnel say, was no accident: The fighters seemed to have known exactly where they were headed. CNN has reviewed documents that Israeli officials say were Hamas attack plans, which suggest that the group collected remarkably granular detail on its targets. Two local Israeli security personnel told CNN they independently saw photos of the plan, and it closely matched the Hamas fighters’ tactics during the attack. But like in Mefalsim, Hamas did not successfully attack Sa’ad – no one died, according to the first responders group.

Biden Says Egypt to Allow Gaza Aid Trucks Through Rafah Crossing
  + stars: | 2023-10-18 | by ( ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
President Biden said Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi has agreed to open the gates to the Rafah border crossing, where trucks carrying aid to the Gaza Strip have been waiting. Biden said up to 20 trucks of humanitarian assistance to Gaza will be allowed to go through. That is about one eighth of what aid workers estimate is required to meet the needs of 1.7 million people now gathered in south Gaza. Egyptian officials acknowledged they had reached an agreement but said there was no mechanism yet to move aid over the border and noted that the Rafah crossing had been destroyed in an Israeli airstrike and needed to be repaired. Biden acknowledged the roads would first need to be repaired and that assistance might not begin moving into Gaza until later in the week.

When she died, Grandma Sue left the most common form of inheritance, called an accidental bequest, which is simply the money left over when someone dies. The New York Times reported on a coming inheritance wealth boom in 2023, 2019, 2014, 2008, and 1999. Even for families with incomes in the 51% to 90% range of earners, the average inheritance was $46,000 — hardly life-changing money. Researchers have been talking about the coming Great Wealth Transfer for at least a quarter of a century. But the reality is that all the wealth boomers are sitting on probably won't end up fixing our collective financial problems.

Aid Trucks Wait at Rafah Crossing as It Remains Closed
  + stars: | 2023-10-18 | by ( ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Several trucks carrying aid to the Gaza Strip were still waiting outside the Egyptian gates to the Rafah border crossing on Wednesday, as an effort to get them through remained stalled. The gates of the only crossing into Gaza not controlled by Israel remained shut following an Israeli strike on Monday that injured four Egyptian workers, Egyptian officials said, who added that Israeli airstrikes make it unsafe to open the border crossing. Earlier Wednesday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi said the country was continuing to receive humanitarian aid and was committed to transporting it to the strip. Dozens of Egyptians staged a sit-in in front of the Rafah crossing on Wednesday to protest the displacement of Palestinians into Egypt and to call for humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza.

That amount is roughly equivalent to the total number of miles of electric grid that currently exists in the world currently, according to the IEA. It will also require changes in how the electric grid in each country is operated and regulated. The consequences of falling further behind in building transmission lines is dire, the IEA says. Building new transmission lines takes between five and 15 years, with planning and permitting included. Building transmission lines globally needs to be an issue of international cooperation, the IEA says.

After the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company flipped the switch on its sprawling new Avon Lake site in 1926, the brick behemoth, then one of the world’s largest coal-fired power plants, helped usher in a new era of regional economic growth in northeastern Ohio. Nearly a century later, the plant sits dismantled and disconnected. It was shut down in 2022, and just one of its six towering smokestacks remains. The proposed cleanup and redevelopment of this ossified power plant joins a growing collection of such projects across the nation. The sites were so decayed, community members considered them a blemish.

The security risks of a diplomatic visit to Israel were starkly illustrated Monday when Blinken, in his meeting with Netanyahu, was forced to shelter in place after air sirens warned of incoming rockets. Biden, he said, “very much looks forward to discussing it further” during his visit. A visit with ‘strategic importance’In weighing Netanyahu’s invitation with his team, Biden factored in both the symbolism of a visit and its practicalities. Before war in Israel broke out, Biden and Netanyahu were planning to visit in person again at the White House, a personal invitation Biden extended when the two last met in New York City. Speaking to reporters Monday, a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces said a visit by Biden would have “strategic importance” for the entire Middle East.

It’s hot in there and we’re not just talking about the steam in the showers, though there’s a lot of that, too. A naval base in real life, it has a picturesque location on a pier; the show’s Italian title, “Mare Fuori,” translates more literally to “The Sea Outside,” as in the sea outside the prison windows. Italian viewers are getting ready for Season 4, whose filming was occasionally interrupted by the screams of fans clustered outside the prison gates. Based on the first season, it is easy enough to understand the impact of “The Sea Beyond” on T-shirt sales and young heart rates. Its heart is pure soap opera, and the writing and direction do not aspire to more.

The papers of Wheeler, who served as ambassador to Nicaragua, are held at the Library of Congress. But no one seemed to have looked at his almanacs, where he had the habit of making marginal notes. In one, Wheeler had jotted a list of enslaved people in his household, which helped Hecimovich build his list of possible authors. Her novel also includes a scene set in a portrait gallery, which similarly mocks the aristocratic pretensions of enslavers. In a December 2022 video, Hamas fighters can be seen flooding a training area, shooting rockets and capturing pretend prisoners as they surround mock Israeli buildings. In one clip, militants are seen practicing take-offs, landings and assaults with paragliders. During the October 7 attack, paragliders took off at dawn close to two training camps geolocated by CNN that are near the Gaza-Israel border.
