The Nasdaq tumbled 2.1% on Friday as tech stocks plunged, marking its worst day since January 31. “US earnings updates this week will be key to see if they can keep topping expectations and buoying risk appetite in a higher-for-longer interest rate environment.”Tesla, Facebook-parent Meta, IBM, Microsoft and Alphabet all report first quarter earnings later this week. “Big Tech earnings may determine whether the stock market avoids its first four-week losing streak in two years,” wrote Chris Larkin, managing director of trading and investing at E*TRADE from Morgan Stanley on Monday. About 15% of S&P 500 companies have reported first quarter earnings, and nearly three-quarters of those companies have posted a positive earnings-per-share surprise. But investors are nervously waiting for the Magnificent Seven, those massive Tech stocks that carry an outsized portion of market weight, to report.

Read previewWhenever Costco releases a batch of gold bars for sale, the supply sells out "within a few hours" as shoppers snap up the precious metal for a small markup over its spot price. The out-of-stock notices give the allure of a hard-to-get item, but the wholesale club is still moving a lot of gold bars and silver coins — to the estimated tune of $200 million a month. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Unlike cash or even gift cards, Costco classifies gold bars as collectibles, which may or may not retain their value over time. AdvertisementFor that matter, the Internal Revenue Service also considers gold bars as a collectible too, and demands as much as a 28% cut of any profits on gold held for more than one year.

Big technology earnings this week could offer a much-needed catalyst for a market under pressure. Last week, the S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite notched their longest daily losing streaks since October 2022, with the broad index posting its worst week since March 2022. Big Tech's performance this week could set the tone for the rest of earnings season and revive the market momentum. Making new friends can feel more daunting when you're past the stages of playgrounds, school sports teams, and dorm rooms. And the average person loses two social ties, including friends, when they get into a romantic relationship. As a psychologist and expert on human connection, I know that the people who are most successful in building and rebuilding their social circles are the ones who don't wait for new friends to come to them. I'd love to stay in touch, if you're open to it. People tend to be particularly open to building a connection when some sort of foundation is already in place.

And if you're looking for high-end sailing to unique destinations, I'd suggest avoiding Royal Caribbean's mega-ships. Brittany Chang/Business InsiderAccording to its current expansion plan, by 2028, about a third of Royal Caribbean's fleet will consist of mega-ships. Wonder of the Seas (left) and Icon of the Seas (right) both have Sorrento's, a complimentary grab-and-go pizza shop. If you plan on cruising with your children — and if they, like me, love activities like rock climbing and mini-golfing — Royal Caribbean's mega-ships could be your best option. After all, like most of Royal Caribbean's largest vessels, both Icon and Wonder are exclusively sailing in the Caribbeans.

Office politics have always been a point of frustration for workers, but now it's politics in the office that's getting to many American workers. In an era during which more workers have felt emboldened to challenge bosses over politics — with the recent Google worker protests and arrests a prime example — just under half of American workers polled by CNBC and SurveyMonkey say they would support a ban on political conversations at work. Younger workers show less hesitancy toward political discussions, with 41% of Gen Z workers saying they would choose to bar any political discussions at work. That's lower than millennial workers (46%), Gen X workers (52%), and boomers (49%). The CNBC | SurveyMonkey online poll was conducted April 3-5 among a national sample of 5,993 workers in the United States.

Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan testifies before a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Oversight of the Federal Trade Commission, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., July 13, 2023. The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday voted 3-2 for a nationwide ban against noncompete agreements, which companies use to prevent employees from taking jobs with competitors in the same industry. The FTC estimates that 30 million American workers, or roughly 18%, are currently subject to a noncompete. The FTC initially proposed the noncompete ban in January 2023. Meanwhile, business trade groups claim that noncompetes help preserve intellectual property and company secrets.

Andrew Aitchison | In Pictures | Getty ImagesIn case you haven't noticed, heat pumps are hot. But there are other reasons why heat pumps are fast becoming popular with homeowners. All of this is transforming Carrier Global , the nearly 100-year-old manufacturer whose founder, Willis Carrier, invented air conditioning. Heat pumps have a history dating back to 1850s The thermodynamic science behind heat pumps was developed in the 1850s, when the first ones were invented, and they've been used in homes since the 1960s. Heat pumps use electricity to transfer heat from a cool space to a warm space, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer.

They built the wooden cart with bicycle tires and a kickstand in her parents' basement in 2016, maxing out her credit card's $1,500 limit to afford materials, and called it The Nitro Cart. That summer, they took it to any event that would take them, from sheep shearing events to farmers markets across Rhode Island, serving small batches of nitrogen-infused cold brew. To survive the winter, they partnered with local restaurants to install their nitro cold brew on tap. Here's how they built The Nitro Bar, from 80-hour workweeks to some TikTok virality and a lot of luck. Amgen has been in pullback mode since the beginning of February, losing roughly 13% within the context of its long-term uptrend. For those interested in "buying the dip," this may be a good time to revisit the stock, noting the decline looks overdone in the short term. There has been a positive reaction from AMGN to a short-term counter-trend "buy" signal from Tom DeMARK's TD Combo model, which supports a minimum two-week bounce. With Friday's reversal bar on AMGN's daily chart, combined with today's strength, our preferred momentum indicator the daily MACD is back on a "buy" signal. The MACD also shows a positive short-term divergence, supporting a bigger relief rally for AMGN in the near term.

CNN —The Supreme Court’s hearing Thursday on former President Donald Trump’s immunity claim will underline a historic power shift. Trump’s relationship has been complex with the court’s conservative majority – despite his instrumental role in establishing it. In sharp contrast, the court’s conservative majority has exerted its influence year after year, without interruption. “There is just much more intense vetting of Supreme Court justices,” said Pierson. “You can tell by the results of the court decisions over the past several years that it is fundamentally different.

He aims to place a stop-limit buy order on a contract slightly above a previous high. It's based on the assumption that when the price begins to rally upward, it attracts more traders to the market and increases price action. ET, a time when market participation can increase for the oil market and create unpredictable conditions, he sold earlier at $79.24. He also avoids trading oil contracts when there are headlines about geopolitical instability or a breakout of war because they create uncertainty.

U.S. crude oil and global benchmark Brent finished out the week about 3% lower, despite the fact that Iran and Israel traded direct strikes against each other's territory for the first time. Fears that oil prices could shoot to $100 a barrel or above did not materialize. The market has essentially erased the risk premium associated with the Iran-Israel tensions after traders bid up prices last week on war fears. "These skirmishes did not impress the oil markets, which believe that no disruption to oil flows will occur."
