The Commerce Department is expected to report Wednesday that gross domestic product grew at a hardy 3.1% annualized pace in the third quarter, adjusted for seasonality and inflation, according to the Dow Jones consensus forecast. Along with that, the release is expected to show that inflation moved closer or perhaps even below the Federal Reserve's 2% target. The Fed uses the personal consumption expenditures price index, included in the GDP estimate, as its primary inflation gauge. The report, then, should indicate a solid economy and easing inflation , the latter at least on a relative basis from how things looked a year ago. "Overall, another quarter of above-trend growth and a benign inflation reading will be welcomed by the Fed."

Overall S & P 500 profit growth is tracking below what analysts anticipated heading into the reporting period. Still, the S & P 500 is less than 1% below a record high reached earlier this month. Solita Marcelli, UBS Global Wealth Management chief investment officer for the Americas, also warned that high valuations could be a problem for megacap tech stocks as earnings roll out. Technical patterns based on price charts aren't too favorable, either, heading into megacap tech earnings. The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) in June hit its highest level relative to the S & P 500 since March 2000 , when the dot-com bubble peaked.

Israel's parliament voted Monday to ban the operations of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, the main humanitarian aid agency operating in Gaza. "This is the latest in the ongoing campaign to discredit UNRWA and delegitimize its role towards providing human-development assistance and services to #Palestine Refugees," Lazzarini wrote. UNRWA is a U.N. aid organization established in 1949 to provide aid and protection to Palestinian refugees in the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Some Israeli critics have said that the agency perpetuates a false narrative that Palestinians are refugees, which Lazzarini referenced in his statement. And U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was declared “persona non grata" by Israel’s foreign minister, Israel Katz, and was banned from entering Israel.

Target has joined other big-box retailers in rolling out Thanksgiving meals that it says will cost less than previous years' offerings. Among the bigger cost savings are turkey at $0.79 a pound, 20% lower than last year, Target said. Last week, Target said it will have lowered prices on some 10,000 items in 2024 amid slowing inflation. Walmart said its "inflation-free Thanksgiving meal" features 29 items serving eight people for less than $7 per person — a lower price point than last year's offering, it said. UK Finance Minister Rachel Reeves makes a speech during the Labour Party Conference that is held at the ACC Liverpool Convention Center in Liverpool, UK on September 23, 2024. LONDON — U.K. Finance Minister Rachel Reeves will deliver the government's hotly awaited debut budget on Wednesday, putting to bed weeks of uncertainty over potential tax hikes and spending cuts. Reports suggest that the Treasury could target public sector net financial liabilities (PSNFL) in the U.K.'s measure of debt, rather than public sector net debt. The PSNFL measure takes in a wider account of the government's balance sheet, including financial assets and liabilities, than public sector net debt. CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday condemned the tone of former President Donald Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden the night before, arguing that it underscored her campaign’s argument against him. “I think last night, Donald Trump’s event in Madison Square Garden really highlighted a point that I’ve been making throughout this campaign,” Harris told reporters before heading to Michigan. Paris AP —French actor Gérard Depardieu, who is facing trial for alleged sexual assaults on two women on a film set in 2021, won’t appear before a criminal court in Paris on Monday due to health reasons, his lawyer said. The trial was scheduled as France continues to reckon with sexual violence in the wake of the #MeToo movement that initially struggled to find traction, especially in the cinema industry. About 100 people gathered outside the court on Monday, some holding signs, responding to a call from several feminist groups to show support for victims of sexual violence. The month before the incident, another woman working on the film set had complained about Depardieu, prosecutors said. China's industrial profits in September dropped at its fastest pace since the pandemic, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed, as the country tussles with an economy plagued by slow growth, lack of demand and a property crisis. After a 17.8% fall in August, industrial profits declined 27.1% in September from a year ago, marking the steepest plunge since March 2020, when it dropped by 34.9%, according to data kept by Wind Information. In the first nine months, industrial profits fell by 3.5% from a year ago. NBS statistician Yu Weining said "insufficient demand and a sharp decline in producer prices" weighed down the profitability of industrial firms. Gary Ng, senior economist at Natixis, said in an email to CNBC that "the weakness of industrial profits indicates China's greater need for demand-side policies."

AdvertisementClimbing the corporate ladder was once the cornerstone of the American dream. Maybe that's why earlier this year, a young New Yorker struck a chord on TikTok when he vowed to "descend the corporate ladder." Eventually, he got promoted into a corporate office role, and that opened up even more opportunities for advancement. "That was a betrayal from a company I had been incredibly dedicated to," Zack told me. Besides, the dream of climbing the corporate ladder was probably never as great as it seemed to be.
