US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller confirmed that the US helped evacuate Fawzia from Gaza. The panther and 20 tigers, including several cubs, weighed between 10 and 120 kilograms (20 and 265 pounds) when they died. Samples taken from the tigers tested positive for H5N1, the virus that causes bird flu. The 30 staff members who were taking care of the tigers tested negative for bird flu and were in normal health condition, VNExpress reported. Bird flu has caused hundreds of deaths around the world, the vast majority of them involving direct contact between people and infected birds.

Rome CNN —More than 180 people were evacuated Thursday from a Ryanair Boeing passenger jet after it caught fire while taxiing to take off at Brindisi Airport in southern Italy. A spokesperson for the airport in Brindisi confirmed there had been a fire that halted air traffic for several hours. Ryanair, the Irish budget airline group that operates Europe’s largest aircraft fleet, said all 184 passengers and crew were safely evacuated on the runway after Thursday’s incident. On Tuesday, another Ryanair aircraft – flight FR846 – headed into Milan Bergamo airport from Barcelona had a tire issue upon landing, which briefly closed the destination airport. Boeing, the manufacturer of both aircraft involved in this week’s incidents, referred CNN to Ryanair.

Krathon made landfall as a much weaker category 1 typhoon around midday at the major port city of Kaohsiung. All domestic flights were canceled for a second day, as well as 236 international ones.
