Read previewThe young crowd at a Nashville nightclub was ready to dance under the strobe lights to a throbbing mix of hip-hop, rap and Latin beats. The last unspoken rule seemed obvious by then: No secular music — the playlist would be all Christian. Word quickly spread around that a couple had traveled 9,000-plus miles from their home in Brisbane, Australia, to the Christian club in the Tennessee capital known as Music City. Whispering, someone in a small group asked God "to keep away negative suicidal thoughts." "It sounds oxymoronic — a Christian dance club," said Nicholas Oldham, who manages the club's business.

Orthorexia: The clean eating disorder

It was 20 years of an eating disorder and the anxiety and stress that comes with it culminating into one moment, he said. But clinicians are seeing a rise in orthorexia among patients, said therapist Jennifer Rollin, founder of The Eating Disorder Center in Rockville, Maryland. Orthorexia is a fixation on eating “clean,” as defined by a set of rules dependent on certain individuals and the context they live in, said Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani, an eating disorder physician and founder and medical director of the Gaudiani Clinic in Denver. When looking at therapy, check for not only an eating disorder specialist, but one with experience with orthorexia, Rollin said. People with orthorexia may find themselves with a team that includes therapists and dietitians, similar to patients in treatment for other eating disorders, Rollin said.

I would have to be 64 years old before I could drive because, at 64, I would have had 16 leap birthdays. AdvertisementMy leap day birthday singled me out in a way that was entirely out of my control. I strove to celebrate my leap birthdays by partying in the fashion of my leap age. And so I like to think of leap day babies as problem solvers. After all, without leap day, everything would be just a little off.

The company laid off 10% of its workforce, which had reached nearly 80,000 employees, last year. AdvertisementJust a year after Salesforce laid off nearly 10% of its workforce, the company's head count is beginning to creep back up. "We're investing into our most productive areas — AI and data," CFO Amy Weaver said this week on the company's fourth-quarter earnings call with investors. The company reported a non-GAAP operating margin of 30.5% for the fiscal year, above the 30% threshold that activist investors had pushed for. New hires, Weaver said, are being added to Salesforce in "cost-effective ways," such as hiring people from areas that have "high talent pools and low cost of living."

Opinion | Nikki Haley Is Actually Winning
  + stars: | 2024-02-29 | by ( Frank Bruni | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
In her make-believe quest for the Grand Old Party’s presidential nomination, Nikki Haley seems to be having a grand old time. She’s not running for president, or at least that’s not her sole or even principal goal in 2024. She’s running for a different kind of glory, and to some degree, she’s winning it, even though she doesn’t deserve it. It’s a big, bold billboard for the new model Haley, who is taking on a titan and telling inconvenient truths. When this is all over, her speaking fees will be astronomical.

Sam Bankman-Fried might be in jail, but the NYT reports that he's still got a finger on the pulse with crypto. Bankman-Fried has been reportedly sharing crypto investment tips with prison guards, per NYT. Bankman-Fried is reportedly giving crypto investment tips and touting investments in the cryptocurrency Solana to prison guards, The Times reported on Tuesday, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter. Bankman-Fried, Mukasey said, should be given a shorter sentence of five to six-and-a-half years. "A sentence that returns Sam promptly to a productive role in society would be sufficient, but not greater than necessary, to comply with the purposes of sentencing," Mukasey wrote.

Buying a car can be stressful, especially when you're negotiating with dealers armed with tricks designed to get you to spend more money. Wiener said that of all the negotiating mistakes that buyers make, one looms above the rest. "You never want to say what you're willing to pay per month," Wiener said. Rather than laying out how much money you're open to spending on your car payment, you should instead determine what the dealership is willing to sell you the car for. He gave the example of a client who wanted to buy a car and put $10,000 down with 0% financing.

The FTC filed a lawsuit against H&R Block over what the commission called deceptive advertising. AdvertisementSo-called "free" online tax filing services like Intuit's TurboTax and H&R Block's Online Filing option have, for a long time, not actually been free for many Americans. The consumer protection agency filed a complaint against H&R Block last week, accusing the company of deceptive advertising and unfairly deleting users' tax data. A 2019 ProPublica investigation found Intuit and H&R Block's practices — including hiding their free filing options from Google search — are part of a decadeslong lobbying effort by the companies to keep tax filing services complicated. It was partially because of those lobbying efforts that the IRS did not roll out its own online free tax filing pilot until last year.

Knee-jerk reaction and poor messaging aside, dynamic pricing isn't really novel and may actually make some sense. Platforms such as Ticketmaster often use dynamic pricing models for concerts and sporting events. CNN —A small species of fish that measures no more than half an inch in length is capable of producing sounds louder than an elephant, according to a new study. Danionella cerebrum, tiny translucent fish that live in shallow waters off Myanmar, can make noises of more than 140 decibels, an international team of scientists report in a press release published Tuesday. Large animals tend to be capable of producing louder noises than small ones, with elephants able to make sounds up to 125 decibels with their trunks. There are also some fish species that make unusually loud noises, such as the male plainfin midshipman fish, which is capable of making mating calls up to 130 decibels, but Danionella cerebrum appears to be unique among fish. “No other fish has been reported to use repeated unilateral muscle contractions for sound production,” reads the study.

About four years ago, the D.J.s Malinder Tooray, Omar Ahmed and Bianca Maieli hosted a night of music and dancing in Los Angeles. Their show, “No Nazar,” attracted a wide following and filled in what many saw as a gap in the music and nightlife scene. “Nazar” is an Arabic word borrowed by many languages and cultures. It invokes the concept of “evil eye” — that is, an envious glance that can cause harm to those it falls on. The event created by Ms. Tooray, Mr. Ahmed and Ms. Maieli reflected a mood the trio was trying to create — that of an inviting and affirming environment that encourages cultural exchange through music.

Amid widespread discontent over President Joe Biden’s management of the border, the overall electorate is moving rightward on immigration too, polls show. For now, there’s no question that hardening GOP attitudes on immigration have been critical to Trump’s strong performance through the early primaries. Then, 56% of GOP primary voters said undocumented immigrants should be offered legal status; in last month’s primary, 55% said they should be deported. Immigration ranked as the most important issue for most GOP primary voters in South Carolina, and finished close behind the economy in both Iowa and New Hampshire. McLaughlin said Trump’s dominance among the GOP primary voters most concerned about immigration encapsulates a broader reason for his early success: widespread satisfaction among Republicans about his record in office.

CNN —In the early heyday of miniseries, “Shōgun” was the show of the year in 1980, and it might be again 44 years later. That chaos also creates the possibility of one regent emerging to consolidate power, and perhaps even gain the title of shōgun. Of course, in today’s heavily fragmented streaming environment “Shōgun” won’t be the massive ratings hit that it was back when there were three broadcast networks (and not much else), but those who wade into this dense history will be amply rewarded. “All men can be broken,” Toranaga muses at one point, with a quiet sense of menace and determination. "Our investments in leading-edge logic chip manufacturing will put this country on track to produce roughly 20% of the world's leading-edge logic chips by the end of the decade," Raimondo said during a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "It takes tens of thousands of leading-edge semiconductor chips to train a single large language model." The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, which manufactures chips for companies such as Apple and Nvidia , is currently the world's largest, most advanced contract chip maker.
