On Wednesday, organizers of the Dotdash Meredith Union took a step to show they're ready to escalate their efforts. Dotdash Meredith sources requested anonymity to speak freely about the status of negotiations and the union's thinking, citing sensitivity over the ongoing talks. Dotdash Meredith spokespersons did not respond to requests for comment. "We've spoken to management across the table and we've appealed to their common sense," a second union source said, adding, "People should see this as us saying, 'We've tried to bargain. The union sources said workers are seeking a provision to prevent the use of AI in generating journalistic content, but the publisher had so far refused to agree to such a clause.

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

Several aides said privately that the mood in the West Wing was upbeat and they expressed a sense of validation that their theory of the case was still valid. Coming after the survey by The New York Times and Siena College, which found Mr. Biden losing to former President Donald J. Trump in five swing states that Mr. Biden won in 2020, the off-year elections were well timed. The results, Biden advisers stressed, reaffirmed that Democrats have outperformed in every election since the Supreme Court’s decision overturning a constitutional right to abortion. It is also true that Mr. Beshear spent much of the campaign distancing himself from Mr. Biden. But Biden advisers noted that two-thirds of the 23 Democratic candidates for the state legislature in Virginia endorsed by the president and Vice President Kamala Harris won.

But Disney+, Paramount+, Peacock and others continue to lose money. Most analysts say that there are too many streaming services and that the weakest will ultimately close or merge with bigger competitors. The entertainment industry’s underlying cable television and box office problems also remain dire, in some cases growing worse during the five months it took to restore labor peace. In July, Disney announced that it was exploring a once-unthinkable sale of a stake in ESPN, the cable giant that has powered much of Disney’s growth over the past two decades. Paramount Global’s once-venerable cable portfolio, centered on Nickelodeon and MTV, has also been pummeled by cord cutting; Paramount shares have dropped nearly 50 percent since May.

From fog horns to bottles of urine, sailors are trying some wild ways to save their yachts. This latest sinking adds to the hundreds of incidents of orcas interacting with, damaging, and sometimes sinking boats over the last three years. Pouring gasoline or diesel fluid and urine into the water had no effect, according to the few sailors who tried it. Dumping a black water tank filled with a "bleach solution" seemed to provoke the orcas into ramming the boat more, according to one account. The CNN poll finds that 25% of voters believe Biden has the stamina and sharpness to serve effectively, while 53% say Trump does. The CNN poll encapsulates this potential dilemma for voters. And given his national approval rating in the CNN poll of only 39%, any economic downturn next year would be disastrous for him. Voters see Trump as a stronger leader, suggesting that bluster and threats are more convincing than Biden’s nuanced approach. Latino voters favor Biden over Trump by only four points compared to 33 points in the 2020 election.

People walk on a crosswalk at a business district in central Tokyo, Japan September 29, 2017. The monthly poll mirrored a similar improvement seen in the third quarter in the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) closely-watched quarterly tankan survey. The service-sector index grew to plus 27 from plus 24 in the previous month, led by retailers, information and communications, and other services. Analysts expect Japan's economy, the world's third-biggest, to have shrunk in the third quarter, the first contraction in four quarters, according to a Reuters poll. The hot new business class ticket within Asia is in fact, Hong Kong to Mumbai. Before the pandemic, more than half of the Asian top line of U.S. bulge bracket banks typically came from Greater China which includes the mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Overall, IPO fees in India have risen from 1% of proceeds in 2017 closer to 2% in recent years, LSEG data shows. Hong Kong bankers are not going to relocate to India any time soon but while they wait out a slow and uncertain recovery in China activity, the trip to India looks increasingly worthwhile. Proceeds from initial public offerings in India amounted to $3.8 billion across 172 deals as of Oct. 24, according to LSEG data.

It's part of a plan to wrong-step China's leaders and make them uncertain about how exactly the US would respond to Chinese attacks on Taiwan. The reasons for the spike in interest rates and the ensuing market chaos are detailed here for the first time. They affect foreign exchange movements since the markets are the major avenue for the supply of money. The money market operator CFETS told traders to keep a 5% ceiling on repo transactions and said anyone involved in high-rate deals closed on Oct. 31 would need to explain themselves to regulators, according to sources who received the notice.
