Goldman names global growth stocks set to make a comeback

European growth stocks haven't been doing as well as their U.S. peers this year. Growth stocks in the region have underperformed value stocks by 13% since the start of the rate-hiking cycle in 2022, according to Goldman Sachs in a Nov. 20 report. Bond yields appear to have peaked — a positive for growth stocks — and economic growth should speed up in the first quarter of next year — a positive for value stocks. The bank recommends an overweight rating for pure growth companies, namely those in its growth basket. Goldman said "pure growth" companies are more cyclical than quality stocks or stocks with stable margins.

One part of artificial intelligence will have an increasing role to play, according to Morgan Stanley. The theme, which it called "Edge AI," involves running AI algorithms directly on a user's device, be it a smartphone, laptop or wearable, among other things. Edge AI can help save costs, reduce latency (or lag time), among other benefits, Morgan Stanley said. MediaTek Morgan Stanley said MediaTek , the largest chip design house in Asia, is gearing up for Edge AI. Xiaomi Morgan Stanley said Xiaomi is a key beneficiary, given its first-mover advantage in Edge AI.

The use of weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic is poised to change consumer consumption patterns, but not every food-related company will get hit in the same way, according to Morgan Stanley. Fast food restaurants were especially vulnerable. "Shoppers with obesity spend more at large fast food brands and, on a relative basis, less at fast casual restaurants and casual diners," Morgan Stanley said. One stock that is closer to a risky pure play is McDonald's , which is second highest on the list, according to the Morgan Stanley research. Low cost retailers like Walmart and snack and beverage companies like Pepsico are also exposed, according to the Morgan Stanley research.

Asian stock markets may have had a weak year, but excessive cash in the region's companies is a hidden opportunity for investors, according to Jefferies. Asian ex-cash P/E is just 9.1 times, indicating "significant value," Jefferies' analysts noted. The region's stocks are also "appealing from the shareholder return perspective," given stronger prospects of buybacks backed by free cash flows and high cash balances, they wrote. Jefferies screened for Asian companies with "significant ex-cash value and strong fundamentals," and which it said make "good candidates" for buybacks and dividends. Other Asian stocks that made Jefferies' list include Singapore's transport company ComfortDelGro and Indian oil and gas company Petronet .

UBS has identified the stocks set to benefit from the growth of next-generation "solid-state" battery electric vehicles. Solid-state batteries are viewed as a potential breakthrough technology because they can store more energy than lithium-ion batteries and charge faster. Toyota's targets for solid-state batteries are about double the capacity of the longest-range Tesla vehicles. The automaker's planned transition to solid-state batteries for its EVs by the late 2020s makes the company's stock an attractive investment, according to the investment bank. The table below shows some of the global stocks best positioned to capitalize on the shift to solid-state batteries, according to UBS: UBS named Toyota Industries , which has already partnered with Toyota Motor on developing lithium-ion batteries, as another stock that could benefit from the shift to solid-state batteries.

Hedge funds' favorite stocks have crushed the broader market in 2023, returning 31%, thanks to mega-cap technology companies, according to Goldman Sachs. It then compiled a basket of the most popular long positions, dubbed Goldman's "Hedge Fund VIP basket," consisting of 50 stocks that most frequently appear among hedge funds' 10 largest holdings. "From an implementation standpoint, the Hedge Fund VIP list represents a tool for investors seeking to 'follow the smart money' based on 13-F filings," Goldman said. "Mirroring the increasing concentration in the equity market, concentration in hedge fund portfolios has risen; the typical hedge fund holds 70% of its long portfolio in its top 10 positions," Goldman said. Goldman also noted that the overweight in mega-cap names lifted hedge fund exposure to "momentum stocks" to a near record.

There's a new top dog when it comes to yields on 1-year certificates of deposit, according to an analysis by Stephens. Bread Financial now has the highest annual percentage yield for 1-year CDs among banks in Stephens' coverage at 5.6%. However, the online bank didn't reach the top by raising its APY. Instead, it was because LendingClub slashed its 1-year CD yield by 10 basis points to 5.55%, analyst Vincent Caintic said. "Online banks had already been cutting 1yr CD rates and this may likely continue as near-term rate expectations fall," Caintic said.

The year-end rally we've been enjoying could get another lift as companies scoop up shares of their own stock. Those gains are driven mainly by falling Treasury yields, as well as third-quarter results that have come in largely better than anticipated. But some market observers expect equities could get another boost from the number of companies exiting the "buyback blackout" window. This period spans several weeks around quarterly results when companies are restricted from repurchasing shares. As of the survey's close last Tuesday, that would mean the S & P 500 would reach 4,945, or an all-time high.
