"Rest on the Flight into Egypt" and other works were stolen from an English country house in 1995. The painting, by a Venetian Old Master, was found at a bus stop in 2002 after a tip-off. The auction house Christie's said the £17.5 million sale price set a record for a work by Titian. AdvertisementAn early painting by one of Europe's most famous painters was auctioned for a record high price years after it was recovered in a shopping bag at a bus stop. It was the highest-priced work to be sold that evening and set a record for any work by Titian, the auction house said.

Read previewUniversal basic income has made giant strides from its origins as a utopian vision toward becoming economic reality. Basic income trials have been conducted in countries as varied as Kenya, Finland, India, and Canada. Proponents of UBI say it reduces poverty, strengthens the social safety net, promotes health and happiness, and combats the stigma around welfare. Basic income recipients in a Finnish trial reported higher life satisfaction, improved health, and lower levels of depression and loneliness. An open questionUniversal basic income remains a largely theoretical idea that could have significant — and unpredictable — impacts on wealth inequality, human welfare, labor markets, and entire economies.

High-speed hippos can get airborne, says new study

CNN —Hippos can get airborne when moving at high speeds over land, according to a new study. After analyzing videos showing 169 movement cycles from 32 hippos, researchers found that the fastest-moving animals spend around 15% of each stride off the ground. John Hutchinson, study lead author and a professor of evolutionary biomechanics at the RVC, told CNN that very little was known about the way that hippos move on land. “Hippos are one of the very few four legged animals at all that just trot,” said Hutchinson. One sample video that showed a baby pygmy hippo galloping has provided Hutchinson with a jumping off point for future research, he said, adding he wants to investigate whether small hippos, such as baby hippos and baby pygmy hippos, are able to gallop but lose this ability when they grow.

London CNN —A twice-stolen painting by Italian Renaissance master Titian, which was once found in a plastic bag at a bus stop in London, sold for $22.3 million at auction on Tuesday. Titian, whose real name was Tiziano Vecellio, made the work in the first decade of the 16th century, at the beginning of his career. Measuring just 18.25 inches by 24.75 inches (46.2 centimeters x 62.9 centimeters), the painting is tiny compared with some of the massive works for which Titian became known later in his life. In 1995, it was stolen from Longleat, the home of Thynne’s descendants, and disappeared for seven years, before it was found at a bus stop in London by art detective Charles Hill. “This picture has captured the imaginations of audiences for more than half a millennia and will no doubt continue to do so,” he added.

Auto Sales Grew Slightly in Second Quarter

Much of the auto industry, with the notable exception of Tesla, reported modest sales growth in the three months through June as high interest rates, high vehicle prices and uncertainty about the economy weighed on consumers. Sales in late June were also slowed by disruptions at car dealers stemming from a cyberattack on a company that supplies software and data services to dealerships. That’s a marked slowdown from the year’s first three months, when sales grew 5 percent. Slow growth is likely to continue through the end of the year, said Jonathan Smoke, Cox’s chief economist. “We probably can’t quite keep the pace of sales of the first half, but we aren’t expecting a collapse in sales.”

CNN —Donald Trump will not be sentenced on his business fraud conviction until September, a New York judge ruled Tuesday in the wake of Monday’s Supreme Court decision on presidential immunity. The ruling could impact the indictments of Trump in the classified documents and Georgia election interference cases as well. Trump’s legal team filed a letter Monday seeking to challenge the former president’s conviction after the Supreme Court ruled that presidents have an absolute immunity from prosecution for core official acts. Yet, in a year of elections around the world, politicians are largely ignoring the problem, unwilling to level with voters about the tax increases and spending cuts needed to tackle the deluge of borrowing. In France, political turmoil has exacerbated concerns about the country’s debt, sending bond yields, or returns demanded by investors, soaring. “Many (politicians) are not willing to talk about the hard choices that are going to need to be made. Despite growing alarm over the federal government’s debt pile, neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump, the main 2024 presidential candidates, are promising fiscal discipline ahead of the election. Former Prime Minister Liz Truss triggered a collapse in the pound in 2022 when she tried to force through big tax cuts funded by increased borrowing.

CNN —President Joe Biden and Benjamin Netanyahu are expected to meet in Washington, DC, in several weeks when the Israeli prime minister visits to address Congress on July 24, a source familiar told CNN. US and Israeli officials are still in the process of nailing down logistical details for the Biden-Netanyahu meeting, which would likely take place at the White House, the source said. A White House official told CNN that Biden has known Netanyahu for decades, and that “they will likely see each other when the Prime Minister is here over the course of that week. But we have nothing to announce at this time.”CNN has also reached out to the prime minister’s office for comment. Smith has argued in court filings that the indictment’s allegations against Trump, particularly regarding the fraudulent electors plot, represent a far more sweeping case. The Supreme Court’s opinion did not address the fake electors scheme specifically. Trump called the decision a “BIG WIN!” on social media. Justice Sonia Sotomayor issued a lengthy and strongly worded dissent in which she excoriated the court for its decision. The chief justice said the trial court will have to assess what of Trump’s alleged conduct is immunized under the new test handed down by the high court, and the opinion said that additional briefing will be needed for the trial court to do so. Justice Amy Coney Barrett expressed frustration with how the court was sending the case back down for more proceedings. She suggested that because Trump’s wholesale challenge to the indictment had failed, at least some of the case could go forward. In that sense, if Smith narrowed his indictment, lower courts could hear the Trump trial this year.

That position appeared to have some purchase on the 6-3 conservative Supreme Court during oral arguments in April. The court will also decide two cases at the intersection of the First Amendment and social media. At issue are laws enacted in Florida and Texas aimed at stopping social media giants like Facebook and X from throttling conservative views. The Republican governors who signed the laws said they were needed to keep the social media platforms from discriminating against conservatives. That is much faster than the 20 minutes or so it currently takes some electric cars using a fast charger, such as a Tesla (TSLA) Supercharger. Republican presidential candidate, former U.S. President Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally at the Liacouras Center on June 22, 2024 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Supreme Court is poised Monday morning to release the final opinions of its term — including a ruling on whether former President Donald Trump is immune from criminal prosecution on federal election interference charges. The decision by the high court, whose six-seat conservative majority includes three members nominated by Trump, will determine the fate of the high-stakes criminal case brought by special counsel Jack Smith. Trump is charged in a four-count indictment with illegally conspiring to overturn his loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election. The case in Washington, D.C., federal court has been on pause while Trump argues that he is immune from prosecution for any official acts he performed while he was president.

The question before the justices in Trump v. United States: Was Donald Trump immune from prosecution for the crimes the special counsel Jack Smith accused him of committing while president? Indeed, to my knowledge, no court has ever held that a president could be criminally immune under any circumstances. Instead of delivering that judgment many months ago and allowing the trial to proceed, the justices have given Mr. Trump the gift of delay piled upon delay. American voters will enter ballot booths to choose between Donald Trump and President Biden without knowing whether Mr. Trump is guilty of the crimes with which a grand jury of his fellow citizens charged him. This decision may seem like a reflection of a rogue conservative majority that can, in time, be changed.
