But for transgender women who live there it had seemed light years away until a rapprochement with the Catholic Church that began during the COVID-19 lockdown and led to an invitation to have lunch with Pope Francis on Sunday. Last week, the Vatican's doctrinal office issued a statement saying transgender people can be godparents at Roman Catholic baptisms, witnesses at religious weddings and receive baptism themselves. As well as sending money, the cardinal arranged for them to have COVID vaccinations in the Vatican and to meet the pope. "For us, he is our saint," Salas said of Conocchia last week. On Sunday, Conocchia arrived at the Vatican on a bus with about 50 poor from his parish, including transgender people, both foreign born and Italian.

ATLANTA (AP) — Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, the closest adviser to Jimmy Carter during his one term as U.S. president and their four decades thereafter as global humanitarians, has died at the age of 96. Fiercely loyal and compassionate as well as politically astute, Rosalynn Carter prided herself on being an activist first lady, and no one doubted her behind-the-scenes influence. After Ronald Reagan won the 1980 election, Rosalynn Carter seemed more visibly devastated than her husband. “We developed a partnership when we were working in the farm supply business,” Rosalynn Carter recalled with pride in a 2021 interview with The Associated Press. ‘A Beautiful Place That Has a Dragon’: Where Hurricane Risk Meets Booming GrowthThe hurricanes keep coming, and the people, too: The fastest-growing places along the Atlantic coast this century are also among the most hurricane-prone. And rising sea levels make storm surges more damaging and coastal flooding more frequent. And this booming coastal population is, by many accounts, a larger contributor to rising hurricane risks than climate change. When Gail Hart moved from Arizona to retire in Wilmington, N.C., in 2017, she hadn’t considered the hurricane risk. Still said, “where do you put 100,000 people?”The housing crunch is one of many tensions playing out between wealthy coastal communities and those who live nearby.

Starship is mounted atop its towering Super Heavy rocket booster in what will be the second attempted flight of both vehicles together. The launch had been scheduled for Friday but was pushed back by a day for a last-minute swap of flight-control hardware. SpaceX is aiming to at least exceed Starship-Super Heavy's performance during its April 20 test flight, when the two-stage spacecraft blew itself to bits less than four minutes into a planned 90-minute flight. SpaceX has since reinforced the launch pad with a massive water-cooled steel plate, one of dozens of corrective actions that the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration required before granting a launch license on Wednesday for the second test flight.

When Revel brought 68 electric mopeds to a Brooklyn storefront in 2018, it set out to show New Yorkers that getting around the city could be fun. Riders could hop onto an electric-blue moped instead of cramming into the subway or getting stuck in car traffic. But now, five years later, the mopeds will soon disappear entirely. On Saturday, Revel — facing the proliferation of other options to get around the city and safety concerns that have kept some people away — will pull its mopeds out of New York and send them to a salvage center. It will also shut down the moped service in San Francisco after previously ending it in other cities.

New York CNN —For over a year, the red-hot housing market has been at the mercy of the Federal Reserve’s rate hikes, which have driven mortgage rates to sky-high levels. Mortgage rates have hovered above 7% since August, according to Freddie Mac data. Both those factors have helped create a scorching-hot housing market and a boom in homebuilder stocks, as Americans turned to building as a buying alternative. Moderating bond yields could change the narrative for the housing market. Tight supply and elevated mortgage rates this year made home purchases the least affordable they’ve been since 1984.

China's Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden had their first meeting in a year this week. Xi entered the talks in an unfamiliar position of weakness amid China's economic woes. It was a stark contrast to recent public remarks by the Chinese president, where he sought to blame crises and conflicts across the globe on US meddling. The New York Times noted just how quickly Xi agreed to the demands, with previous US-China deals brokered after days of painstaking diplomatic negotiations. Though Xi is hoping for a short-term decrease in tensions, Chinese economic woes are unlikely to have altered his long-term calculations.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — President Joe Biden and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, two strong allies who don't always get along personally, will talk migration, fentanyl trafficking and Cuba relations on Friday. He skipped a Los Angeles summit last year where leaders tackled the issue of migration because the U.S. didn't invite Cuba, Nicaragua or Venezuela. Biden, meanwhile, was expected to bring up migration as the U.S. continues to manage a growing number of southern border crossings. The leaders also are expected to discuss deadly fentanyl trafficking, particularly after Biden secured an agreement with Xi to curb the illicit opioid. More than 100,000 deaths a year have been linked to drug overdoses since 2020 and about two-thirds of those are related to fentanyl.

At the height of the "great resignation," many new hires could expect to double their salaries or receive generous sign-on bonuses. But landing a new job today doesn't pay off like it did only a year ago. Lower quit rates, increasing labor supply and falling worker demand could all be to blame for slowing wage growth this year, says Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP. Some industries have been hit harder than others: For new hires in finance, pay growth has been at a "literal standstill" since July, says Richardson. As Richardson cautions: "That new-hire glow — contentment fueled largely by big pay increases — is fading fast."

ORLANDO, Florida, Nov 16 (Reuters) - The U.S. high yield bond market is the dog that has rarely barked, never mind bitten, during the Federal Reserve's most aggressive interest rate-raising campaign in 40 years. The 'junk' bond market may also contain less junk than it used to. But changes in the composition of a leading high yield corporate bond index over recent years suggests this might be the case. "The high yield index is a higher quality index than in cycles past," reckons Bill Callahan, investment strategist at Schroders. It is now below 400 bps, and high yield bond investors are the most overweight since January, BofA's latest survey shows.

Make America Build Again

America is the sixth-most-expensive place in the world to build subways and trolleys. The solutions will cost trillions of dollars and require a pace of building unseen in America since World War II. Perhaps the single most pressing question we face today is: How do we make America build again? "For this class of projects, federal environmental laws are more the exception." The prospect of overhauling our hard-won environmental laws might feel like sacrilege to anyone who cares about the Earth.

People will be able to shop for Hyundai vehicles on Amazon through an agreement with the South Korean automaker. Laws in most US states protect auto dealerships from automakers who might want to sell directly to consumers. Amazon customers will be able to search dealership inventories through the Amazon website, see pricing for vehicles, and click a button to initiate a purchase. This arrangement was announced as part of a package of deals between Hyundai and Amazon, including that Amazon will provide data storage for Hyundai and that future Hyundai models will include the Alexa voice assistant. Hyundai dealers won’t have to participate in the program, but can opt-in.

FDA officials don't have the legal authority to force manufacturers to recall their products, and instead rely on companies to “voluntarily” do so. The FDA previously stated it recommended the manufacturer recall the eyedrops on Oct. 25. That suggests agency officials may still be finalizing documentation from the inspection that triggered the latest recall. Agency records show FDA didn't conduct any inspections in India during fiscal year 2021, at the height of the pandemic. CVS Health said in a statement that it previously “stopped the sale in-store and online” of all the eyedrops cited by the FDA.
