Rallying around Tesla’s design will help. The partnership will also likely kill off competing standards - Tesla, Ford and GM accounted for three-quarters of electric cars sold in 2022, according to Experian. Apple (AAPL.O) and Alphabet’s (GOOGL.O) Google offer software that replaces the infotainment system and Tesla wants others to adopt its self-driving technology. Barra and Farley have given the tech upstarts an inch; Tesla and Big Tech will try to take the next mile. Tesla said in November that it would open its charging design for use by other companies.

DETROIT — General Motors will follow crosstown rival Ford Motor in partnering with Tesla to use the electric vehicle leader's North American charging network and technologies. Under the deal, GM vehicles will be able to access 12,000 of Tesla's fast chargers using an adapter and the Detroit automaker's EV charging app, starting next year. The partnerships with now two leading Detroit automakers is a major win for Tesla and its charging technology. It is expected to add pressure on other automakers — as well as the U.S. government, which is investing billions in building out an EV charging network — to adopt Tesla's technology. The deal was announced by Barra and Tesla CEO Elon Musk during a live audio discussion on Twitter Spaces.

Companies Ford Motor Co FollowWASHINGTON, June 6 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) said on Tuesday it is expanding and issuing a new recall for 125,000 sport utility vehicles and trucks because engine failures may cause a fire. Ford said isolated engine manufacturing issues can cause the engine to fail prematurely and in that event engine oil or fuel vapor may be released, increasing the risk of fire and injury. Ford said on Tuesday it had reports of at least three vehicles that suffered fires after getting the 2022 recall fix. Ford and NHTSA advised owners to park and shut off the engine if they hear unexpected engine noises, notice a reduction in vehicle power, or see smoke. Ford said last week that dealers will add an in-line fuse to the battery monitor sensor power circuit.

The deal, announced last month, would open more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers to drivers of Ford vehicles in North America starting in 2024. SS&C has invested in such charging companies as ChargePoint Holdings Inc (CHPT.N), EVgo Inc (EVGO.O) and Blink Charging Co (BLNK.O). The Ford deal was a boost to Tesla's more widespread, reliable North American Charging Standard (NACS) and dented the value of smaller players offering the rival Combined Charging System (CCS). Complaints about other charging companies' software bugs or broken charging hardware only opens the door to greater access for Tesla's standard, however, industry officials said. Under its new deal, Ford will distribute Tesla adapters to customers and starting in 2025 will equip future EVs with NACS.

DETROIT, June 2 (Reuters) - General Motors Co (GM.N) Chief Executive Mary Barra had a message on Friday for investors and rivals who see no profitable future in autonomous vehicles: You're wrong. That target assumes deployment of Cruise technology and services outside the United States - Dubai and Japan are among the future markets - as well as expansion into goods delivery and personal autonomous vehicles, Barra said. Rivals, including Ford Motor Co (F.N) and Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE), have pulled the plug on autonomous vehicle efforts as losses mounted. Barra said those states have a more welcoming regulatory environment for self-driving vehicles. GM has petitioned U.S. vehicle safety regulators to deploy up to 2,500 of its Origin vehicles, which have subway-like doors and no steering wheel.

United Auto Workers members on strike picket outside General Motors' Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant on Sept. 25, 2019 with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders (far left) in Detroit. DETROIT – The United Auto Workers union appears ready to take a hard line when it comes to national negotiations this year with the Detroit automakers, warning of strikes or work stoppages, if needed. UAW President Shawn Fain said the "union will not accept any concessions" from General Motors , Ford Motor and Stellantis – a lofty mission in such negotiations. Contract talks between the union and automakers usually begin in earnest in July ahead of mid-September expirations of the previous four-year agreements. Union leaders, led by Fain, are largely newly elected officers that ran on platforms of standing up to companies and reforming the organization following a years-long federal corruption scandal that partially involved prior negotiations.

REUTERS/Mike Blake/File PhotoMay 26 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) shares jumped by more than 7% on Friday after the No. 2 U.S. automaker announced a deal allowing its electric-vehicle owners to access rival Tesla Inc's (TSLA.O) charging stations in North America. Ford shares were up 7.6% at $12.25 in afternoon trade, while Tesla shares rose 7.5% to $197.95. DETROIT – A surprise deal between Ford Motor and Tesla on electric vehicle charging technology and infrastructure could put new pressure on other automakers' EV strategies. The tie-up between the two rivals will give Ford owners access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada, starting early next year. More importantly, Ford's next generation of EVs — expected by mid-decade — will use Tesla's charging plug, allowing owners of Ford vehicles to charge at Tesla Superchargers without an adapter. Ford CEO Jim Farley and Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced the deal Thursday during a live audio discussion on Twitter Spaces. Tesla vehicles and its Supercharger network use what's known as NACS.
Michael Wayland/CNBCDETROIT — Ford Motor's largest competition in electric vehicles isn't U.S. leader Tesla or crosstown rival General Motors — it's Chinese automakers, CEO Jim Farley said Thursday. Farley said Chinese companies such as Warren Buffett-backed BYD are ahead of the large U.S. automakers and startups on electric vehicles, specifically battery chemistry and other emerging technologies. And they were always committed to electric," Farley said when asked which company is doing EVs right. Farley's comments echo those of industry experts and investors regarding the growth of BYD and other Chinese automakers, which have government backing in China. Farley also noted BYD's battery advantages compared to the current U.S. industry standard of lithium-ion batteries.
DETROIT – Ford Motor will partner with Tesla on charging initiatives for its current and future electric vehicles in an unusual tie-up between the two rivals, CEOs of the automakers announced Thursday. Under the agreement current Ford owners will be granted access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada, starting early next year, via the use of an adapter. And, Ford's next-generation of EVs — expected by mid-decade — will include Tesla's charging plug, allowing owners of Ford vehicles to charge at Tesla Superchargers without an adapter, making Ford among the first automakers to explicitly tie into the network. A Ford spokesman said the company has "this option available to us but have no news to share today." A separate Ford spokesman told CNBC that pricing for charging "will be competitive in the marketplace."
Ford signs battery material supply deals to charge up EV output

May 22 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) on Monday unveiled three deals for the supply of lithium products, including lithium hydroxide, as the automaker ramps up electric vehicle (EV) production to 2 million units by the end of 2026. The deals come as North American automakers race to secure supplies of battery materials to boost EV output and catch up with market leader Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) amid surging demand for environment-friendly vehicles. The long-term deal with Canada's Nemaska Lithium is for the supply of up to 13,000 tons of lithium hydroxide every year, while the contract with EnergySource Minerals will help Ford receive lithium hydroxide from the Imperial Valley, California site, expected to be operational in 2025. Ford also disclosed a five-year agreement with Albemarle Corp (ALB.N) to supply more than 100,000 metric tons of battery-grade lithium hydroxide for about 3 million future Ford EV batteries. The lithium hydroxide produced by Nemaska should help qualify Ford vehicles for consumer tax benefits under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, the automaker said.
