Singapore’s state food agency (SFA) has approved 16 species of edible insects for sale and consumption in the country, according to a July 8 public circular addressed to food traders. Insects approved by the SFA include locusts, grasshoppers, mealworms and several species of beetle. “Insects are an overlooked source of protein and a way to battle climate change,” according to a 2022 report by the World Economic Forum. Live insects are commonly sold in Singapore as food for pets like songbirds and reptiles, but they could be a new and exciting option for human diners. “As the insect industry is nascent and insects are a new food item here, SFA has developed an insect regulatory framework which puts in place guidelines for insects to be approved as food,” SFA said.

CNN —Ryan Garcia has been expelled by the World Boxing Council (WBC) following a social media livestream where he repeatedly used racist and discriminatory language against Black people and Muslims, per the Associated Press. “Exercising my authority as president of the WBC, I am hereby expelling Ryan Garcia from any activity with our organization,” WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I was trolling I want all the killing to stop,” Garcia posted, per the Associated Press. New York CNN —A federal judge on Wednesday delayed a ban on noncompete agreements from taking effect for a small number of US workers on September 4. Unless the judge makes another ruling before that date, the ban will go into effect for the majority of employers in the US. The ban, which prohibits employers from enforcing noncompete clauses in most existing employment agreements and bans companies from including them in all future ones, was approved by the Federal Trade Commission in April. Plans to build an outpost of the Pompidou Center in the heart of Jersey City were put on hold after the State Legislature voted last week to rescind $24 million in funding for the Paris museum’s project. Another $34 million in state and federal assistance for what would have been the Pompidou’s first satellite location in North America was also put in jeopardy by the vote.
