The Social Security cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, could be 2.5% next year, Mary Johnson, an independent Social Security and Medicare analyst, predicted last month. As Hurricane Milton approached landfall in western Florida on Wednesday, the Biden administration warned consumers and businesses of the heightened risk of potential fraud, price gouging and collusion that accompanies major natural disasters. Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan said the FTC is "hearing troubling reports of price gouging for essentials that are necessary for people to get out of harm's way — from hotels to groceries to gas." "Companies are on notice: do not use the hurricane as an excuse to exploit people through illegal behavior," said Manish Kumar, a deputy assistant attorney general in the Justice Department's Antitrust Division. Most states have laws intended to curb price gouging, with many of these restrictions tied to declared states of emergency. European stocks are heading for a flat to mixed open Wednesday as positive sentiment wavers in the region, spurred by market volatility in China. Regional markets traded and closed lower Tuesday, with all major bourses and the majority of sectors trading in the red during the day. On Tuesday, the HSI recorded its worst day in 16 years, closing 9.41% lower. U.S. stock futures hovered near the flatline Tuesday night after a winning session for the major averages. Wall Street is coming off a strong session for the major averages Tuesday as tech stocks outperformed, and oil prices eased off their highs.

As Hurricane Milton barrels toward Tampa Bay, some residents are saying that the resources needed to evacuate — especially gasoline — are in short supply, despite a mandate to leave the area. Debris from Helene also poses a risk as Milton approaches because the objects can turn into dangerous projectiles. On social media, lines stretching around the block could be seen at the few gas stations in the greater Tampa Bay area that still had fuel. Hurricane Helene had already damaged her family home and she assumes more, if not total damage, will be wrought by Milton. “What’s really sad is seeing people pulling up to gas stations and just staring at pumps that are out of gas,” she said.

European markets are heading for a mixed open Tuesday as regional sentiment sours further after a shaky start to the week, with investors watching the conflict in the Middle East closely and its potential impact on oil markets, supply chains and the global economy. Elsewhere overnight, U.S. stock futures were little changed following a losing day on Wall Street Monday as rising oil prices and bond yields weighed on markets. In the Asia-Pacific region, an initial rally for Chinese markets lost steam after a briefing from the country's National Development and Reform Commission provided few details on further stimulus. Earlier, mainland China's CSI 300 index had skyrocketed over 10% at the open at its return from the Golden Week holiday, but the index pared gains later in the session. New York CNN —Gas stations in many areas of Florida are running out of gasoline, as residents prepare for Hurricane Milton. Gas price tracking service GasBuddy reported that as of Tuesday morning, 14.5% of gas stations statewide were without fuel, a dramatic spike from just 3% on Monday. DeSantis said 27 fuel trucks were escorted by the Florida Highway Patrol to deliver fuel to stations in the anticipated impact area of the storm. “We have been dispatching fuel over the past 24 hours as gas stations have run out,” he said at a press conference early Tuesday. And the real fear is that the hurricane and storm surge could cause significant damage to the port.
