Biden beat Trump 87% to 12% among Black voters in 2020, according to CNN exit polls. Harris attempted to convince festival attendees that “we can see it through” if they once again vote in record numbers. Many look to Harris as the obvious successor if Biden steps aside, with a recent CNN poll conducted after the debate showing the vice president outpacing Biden in a hypothetical race against Trump. The vice president was able to avoid talking about worries within her own party Saturday as the moderator did not specifically ask about concerns over Biden’s reelection bid. Meanwhile, other Biden surrogates at the event tackled the issue head-on, throwing their support behind the president and telling voters that he’s not going anywhere.

Almost one year after the authorities raided The Marion County Record, a Kansas weekly newspaper, a former reporter has reached a $235,000 settlement as part of a lawsuit she filed over the search, which set off a national discussion about press freedoms. The settlement, dated June 25, brought an end to a lawsuit filed by the former reporter, Deb Gruver, against Gideon Cody, who resigned as the Marion city police chief in October in the face of mounting pressure. Ms. Gruver’s lawsuit claimed that Mr. Cody had caused injury to her hand while forcibly obtaining her personal cellphone during the raid. Body-camera footage corroborated Ms. Gruver’s account, according to Eric Meyer, the newspaper’s publisher. Mr. Meyer said on Saturday that body-camera audio recorded Mr. Cody “saying that it just made his day.”

Currently, a 40% federal estate tax applies to estate values topping $13.61 million for individuals and $27.22 million for married couples. When someone dies, their heirs have nine months to file a federal estate tax return if their inheritance meets those minimums. Here's how a Graegin loan could work in practice, according to Doyle:Related storiesHeirs of a $10 million estate could be on the hook for $4 million in federal estate taxes. The taxable estate is $1 million less, which means the family will save $400,000 in estate taxes considering the 40% tax rate. More households will be on the hook for estate taxes, and loans to pay them could become more popular.

Meanwhile, private military housing providers operate with relatively little oversight from the Army despite years of outcry from service members and lawmakers on Capitol Hill. The house the Kiernans lived in and its subsequent maintenance was managed by Cavalry Family Housing, which has some 5,000 homes around Fort Cavazos in its portfolio. Two people were killed and at least nine others were injured after an apparently impaired driver plowed a pickup truck into a crowd of people celebrating July 4 in a park on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the authorities said. Several of the injured were transported to hospitals, two of them in critical condition, the authorities said at a news conference on Thursday night. A police spokesman confirmed by phone that one person had been taken into custody. Speaking at the news conference, Mayor Eric Adams of New York said that though investigations were preliminary, the incident did not appear to be “terrorist related.” Officers responding to the scene smelled alcohol on the driver, and the police were conducting tests to confirm, officials said. Police said that just before 9 p.m., a Ford F-150 driving eastbound at high speed down Water Street sped through a stop sign, up onto the sidewalk and into Corlears Hook Park, where a crowd of people were celebrating the holiday.

Hurricane Beryl, the earliest Category 5 hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic, tore through a new swath of the Caribbean, where it had left islands flattened and communities inundated, then continued toward Mexico on Thursday. In Jamaica, residents who emerged from shelters took in a landscape of farmland that had been devastated, homes that had sustained damage and roads that were covered with toppled utility poles and foliage. “The whole place mash up,” Steve Taylor, a resident of the low-lying coastal town of Mitchell Town, told a local television station. St. Elizabeth, a farming region known as the country’s bread basket, was hit particularly hard. “Southwest St. Elizabeth is facing complete devastation,” said Jamaica’s agriculture minister, Floyd Green.

Fight Over Seabed Agency Leadership Turns Nasty

Rather, they are efforts in the seemingly genteel parlors of a United Nations-affiliated agency, meant to sway decisions related to the start of seabed mining of the metals used in electric vehicles. It is all part of a nasty fight over who will be the next leader of the International Seabed Authority, which controls mining in international waters worldwide. The accusations of trickery underscore the controversial nature of the agency’s coming agenda and the billions of dollars at stake. Some countries are fiercely opposed to the idea of mining the world’s deepest waters while others see it as a badly needed economic opportunity. Whoever helms the agency’s top post over the next few years will have considerable influence over these decisions.

Taipei, Taiwan CNN —China’s coast guard detained a Taiwanese fishing vessel and its five-member crew near the mainland’s southeast coast on Tuesday night, according to Taiwan authorities, in the latest flare-up of tensions in waters around a group of frontline islands controlled by Taipei. In a statement, Taiwan’s coast guard said the fishing boat, Tachinman 88, was intercepted by two Chinese coast guard vessels near the Kinmen islands, which lie just miles from the Chinese city of Xiamen. China coast guard officers boarded the fishing boat and then escorted it to a nearby Chinese port, the statement said, adding that three Taiwan coast guard vessels answered a call for help but retreated to avoid conflict when they were outnumbered by their Chinese counterparts. The Taiwan coast guard demanded the immediate release of the boat and crew members. In late February, Chinese coast guard officers intercepted and boarded a Taiwanese tourist boat for inspection, an unprecedented move that startled Taiwanese passengers.

The Real Problem With Legal Weed
  + stars: | 2024-07-03 | by ( Charles Fain Lehman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Kathy Hochul has called New York’s legalization rollout “a disaster.” Mayor Eric Adams has spent months demanding that Albany fix the current system. There are around 140 recreational dispensaries operating statewide — about one for every 148,000 New Yorkers. Instead of shopping legally, New Yorkers tend to get their weed from the illegal shops that now blanket the state. Estimates suggest that there are anywhere from 2,000 to 8,000 in New York City alone, with uncounted more from Ithaca to Oneonta. Recent crackdowns have temporarily sealed more than 400 stores — only a small fraction of the total in the city.

If completed, it appears the Jeddah tower would be the Trump Organization’s first major project in Saudi Arabia. Dar Global said the project will target the “luxury Saudi Arabian market and international investors.”The new project in Saudi Arabia comes just days after the Trump Organization and Dar Global unveiled a $500 million Trump International hotel complex in Oman. CNN —With another pricey Alzheimer’s disease treatment expected to receive an approval decision soon, the nonprofit Alzheimer’s Association has published the final version of its new diagnostic criteria for the disease. Together with another protein, tau, which makes fibrous tangles that block the communication of nerve cells, they are considered a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. “There’s no evidence for it,” said Dr. George Perry, a neurobiologist and editor of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. Two members of the panel were employees of the Alzheimer’s Association, which also takes funding from pharmaceutical companies. Seoul, South Korea CNN —A ballistic missile launched by North Korea on Monday might have had an “abnormal” flight trajectory and could have fallen inland, possibly near the capital of Pyongyang, the South Korean military said. North Korea launched two ballistic missiles on Monday morning, according to reports from the South Korean, American and Japanese governments. South Korea later said the North Korean claim was false. The Trump Organization has signed a new deal with a Saudi real estate company to build a residential high-rise tower in the city of Jeddah, extending the family’s close ties with the kingdom. Saudi Arabia has become one of the few reliable sources of growth for the Trump family’s business operations, as new real estate deals in the United States have slowed or stopped since the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol and since former President Donald J. Trump left the White House. This new deal is like other international projects the Trump family has signed over the past decade. Other projects include a resort complex in Oman and Saudi-backed golf tournaments at Trump courses in recent years. “We are delighted to strengthen our ongoing relationship with the Trump Organization and expand our portfolio by delivering premium properties to redefine Saudi Arabia’s high-growth real estate market,” Ziad El Chaar, the chief executive of the real estate firm, Dar Global, said in a statement Monday.

The United States is producing less than 1% of the wind power it wants to generate by 2030. And as Eric Hines, the director of Tufts University's offshore wind energy graduate program, puts it, "We're going to need somewhere on the order of five of these installation vessels in just a few years." The Biden administration wants the U.S. to generate 30,000 megawatts from wind power within the next five and a half years. As of last year, that figure stood at just 42 megawatts, putting the nation far behind Europe — which added 18,300 megawatts of new wind energy capacity in 2023 alone, according to WindEurope. ("There are no known links between large whale deaths and ongoing offshore wind activities," the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has said.)

Expensive fuel, maintenance, and labor don't help, nor do unpredictable setbacks outside the airline's control, like pandemic travel bans and production slowdowns at planemaker Boeing. But across the industry, many airlines are struggling to turn profits thanks to issues like overcapacity, unrelenting competition, and unexpectedly high costs, according to experts. Boeing delivery delays have eaten into profitsHarteveldt said Boeing's ongoing delivery delays have cost airlines like American, Southwest, and United millions of dollars. Airlines are plagued by high costs in an extremely competitive industryNearly everything is more expensive than it was before the pandemic, and airlines are no exception. For low-cost carriers like Frontier and Spirit, these high costs make it challenging to make money, Kraemer said.

Tractor Supply Co. backtracks on DEI roles and goals

New York CNN —Tractor Supply Company has eliminated its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives as part of what the retail chain says is a push to distance itself from “nonbusiness activities” after conservative backlash from some of its customer base. “You can’t say you’re going to try to do at Tractor Supply what they do at the Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California — that’s definitely not going to work,” he said. “Tractor Supply Co is turning its back on their own neighbors with this shortsighted decision,” Eric Bloem, vice president of Programs and Corporate Advocacy at the Human Rights Campaign, told CNN in a statement Saturday.
