March 21 (Reuters) - Computing networking pioneer Bob Metcalfe on Wednesday won the industry's most prestigious prize for the invention of the Ethernet, a technology that half a century after its creation remains the foundation of the internet. The Association for Computing Machinery credited Metcalfe, 76, with the Ethernet's "invention, standardization, and commercialization" in conferring its 2022 Turing Award, known as the Nobel prize of computing. The Ethernet got its start when Metcalfe, who later went on to co-found computing network equipment maker 3Com, was asked to hook up the office printer. Metcalfe said previous generations of AI "died on the vine because of a lack of data." And the brain teaches us that connecting them is where it's at," Metcalfe said.

A screenshot of Larry Kramer's bio on a Stanford Law School web page shows that he's emeritus dean of the institution. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1984, according to his Stanford Law bio page. On his personal page, Paepcke listed hobbies including "piano studies and simple composition, worrying, and poetry."

By that time, Cox says people will be able to take a walk with friends and family in virtual worlds as readily as they now make video or voice calls. "A more open metaverse is better," HP Chief Executive Enrique Lores said on the panel. "If someone controls the full metaverse the ability for others to add value is much smaller."
Google's moonshot factory is coming down to Earth

The project, known internally by its codename, "Valkyrie," was the typical science-fiction-sounding idea that Google's self-described "moonshot factory" was designed to dream up. But amid a lack of successful launches and a tech industry facing economic headwinds, insiders say the lab is now hitting the hard-reset button and rethinking its purpose within Alphabet, Google's parent company. X swapped standard corporate titles like "Communications Lead" and "Manager" for grander and more-nebulous names like "Factory Whisperer" and "Firestarter." Its internet-balloon unit, Google Loon, meant to bring people in rural areas online, was shuttered in January 2021. "I think the infusion of VC people is a good thing," one former senior X employee said.
Brewer, 60, is chasing a new first of sorts in her role at Walgreens: turning the $33 billion pharmacy chain into a destination healthcare company. After stepping into power at America's second-largest pharmacy during the deadliest disease event in US history, Brewer has been pursuing a wide-ranging strategy to remake the company. The company's larger rival, CVS Health, is following a similar strategy of making healthcare a bigger part of its business. "Dispensing of pharmaceuticals is not going to be our long-term growth avenue," Brewer said at a 2022 healthcare-industry conference, according to FierceHealthcare. But healthcare is complex and even the company's long-standing pharmacy business comes with challenges.
NEW YORK, Nov 22 (Reuters) - Can Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) bank on another hit sequel? That appears to be the hope behind the company's surprise decision to bring back former chief executive Bob Iger to replace Bob Chapek. During his first tenure from 2005 to 2020, Disney's annualised shareholder returns were more than 14%, well above its rival Comcast Corp (CMCSA.O) and the broader stock market, and in total in that period the stock rose more than 400%. Yet there are reasons to think that Disney may have made the right decision in bringing back Iger, Bingham said. “I think this is a game-changer," said Stephanie Link, chief investment strategist and portfolio manager at Hightower Advisors, about Disney.
Speaking to reporters this week, Brown reaffirmed that he intends to seek a fourth term. Jai Chabria, Vance’s chief campaign strategist, said he expects the “floodgates to open” with candidates eager to take on Brown. Dolan’s pitch to county chairs this week leaned into frustrations that Republicans have vented toward Trump after disappointing midterm results. For Brown, this year’s midterm elections in Ohio have yielded a more unpleasant set of questions than the last. “He is a different beast than Tim Ryan, because Tim Ryan was a Xerox of a Xerox of Sherrod Brown,” Chabria said.

Brown & Brown — Shares of the insurance company dropped 11% after Brown & Brown missed earnings expectations. Brown & Brown posted earnings of 50 cents per share on revenue of $927.6 million. Oct 25 (Reuters) - Xerox Holdings Inc's (XRX.O) shares plunged about 25% to 13-year lows on Tuesday after the photocopy maker slashed its annual revenue and cash flow forecasts, blaming a stronger dollar and a slower-than-expected recovery in global supply chains. Xerox on Tuesday lowered its 2022 revenue forecast to between $7 billion and $7.1 billion, compared to its previous forecast of at least $7.1 billion, reflecting a weaker euro and British pound. The company, whose largest shareholder is activist investor Carl Icahn, cut its annual free cash flow (FCF) forecast to at least $125 million from about $400 million. The reduction is partly due to persistently high inflation and slower-than-expected supply chain improvements, Xerox said. Third-quarter revenue of $1.75 billion fell short of analysts' estimate of $1.77 billion, according to Refinitiv data.
General Motors (GM) – GM shares rallied 4.4% in premarket trading after the automaker reported a better-than-expected third-quarter profit, helped by rebounding sales. JetBlue (JBLU) – JetBlue reported a quarterly profit as elevated travel demand helped to make up for rising costs. UBS (UBS) – UBS jumped 5.1% in the premarket after the Swiss bank posted better-than-expected quarterly results, helped by a jump in customer cash inflows to its wealth management business. SAP (SAP) – SAP rose 3% in premarket action after the German business software company reported upbeat quarterly results, helped by strong growth in its cloud business. Qualtrics (XM) – Qualtrics surged 9.6% in the premarket after the maker of customer feedback software reported better-than-expected quarterly results and lifted its full-year forecast.
Several companies have reported earnings below expectations or are providing weak guidance. JetBlue reported earnings lower than expected, but sales were in-line. General Electric was trading up premarket Tuesday, even though earnings were short of forecasts and it cut its full year outlook. Corning was in-line but provided weak guidance. The homebuilder posted earnings and revenues below expectations, yet the numbers were still strong: revenues up 13%, earnings up 44%.

Supply chain impact from second round of U.K. strikesThe latest development comes amid mounting labor issues linked to inflation at U.K. ports, with workers at the nation's largest port, Felixstowe, beginning another strike this week after one in August. "Unite made it clear that until they have reached their goals these waves of strikes will continue which will have a massive impact on the Christmas business and supply." The CNBC Supply Chain Heat Map shows the present situation at the ports.

This eight-day strike overlaps with a second strike at the UK's largest container port, the Port of Felixstowe, set to begin on Sunday. With multinational companies including Ford — which on Monday warned of a significant cost increase from supply chain pressures — exporting from the UK, the continuing labor strife will stress an already congested European port network. Ford is one of thousands of companies that use both the UK ports and the ports in Germany, Belgium, and Netherlands to export auto parts. According to FreightWaves SONAR data, the Port of New York and New Jersey receives 30 percent of all UK exports.
But former Xerox CEO Ursula Burns — who became the first Black female CEO of a Fortune 500 company in 2009 — says she never bought into that narrative. "I would not be able to be CEO of the company unless I outsourced the caring for my kids," Burns, 63, tells CNBC Make It. Burns led Xerox from 2009 to 2016, when the company split into two corporate entities: Xerox and Conduent. In 2009, Burns was also appointed by President Barack Obama to help lead the White House National STEM program, which encourages students to pursue STEM-related careers.
