Mayor Vitali Klitschko, writing on Telegram, said the body of one resident was recovered when emergency services put out a fire in the capital's historic Podil district. These included gains near the shattered city of Bakhmut, captured by Russian forces in May after months of battles. Maliar said Ukrainian forces had contained attempted Russian advances on towns to the north and west. Ukraine said this week its forces had control of elevated positions allowing for direct strikes on the city of Bakhmut.

Russian forces fired more than 20 missiles at Ukraine’s capital in a predawn assault on Saturday that left at least three people dead. Moscow’s military leadership accuses Mr. Prigozhin of trying to mount a coup against Mr. Putin. Serhiy Popko, the head of the Kyiv military administration, said air defenses had shot down more than 20 missiles around the capital but that falling debris had hit a high-rise building and started a blaze that destroyed three floors. As rescuers worked at the scene, Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, said that there might be people under the rubble. Residents carefully stepped over the broken glass and building fragments that had scattered throughout the parking lot below.

Ukraine to make personnel changes over bomb shelter deaths
  + stars: | 2023-06-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
KYIV, June 23 (Reuters) - President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Friday there would be personnel changes following an inquest into the state of Ukraine's bomb shelters after three people were locked out on the street and killed during an air raid. The situation is especially cynical and shameful in those cities that have significant financial resources, but, unfortunately, have other priorities. Zelenskiy ordered an audit of all air raid shelters after the deaths of the three people, who rushed to a Kyiv air raid shelter that failed to open. Zelenskiy has criticised Kyiv city officials and prosecutors put the head of Kyiv's municipal department for security under house arrest following an audit of air raid shelters. After the bomb shelter incident, Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said he bore some responsibility but that others were to blame, especially appointees of the president.

Ukraine's Zelenskiy vows action on air raid shelters

June 12 (Reuters) - President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed unhappiness on Monday at results of an inspection he ordered into all Ukrainian shelters after three people were killed when they were unable to access one during a Russian air strike in Kyiv. In his nightly video address, Zelenskiy said he had received summary reports on the shelters' "preparedness and unpreparedness" from Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, Oleksandr Kamyshyn, the minister for strategic industries, and Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov. The deaths on June 1 caused a public outcry and a promise by Zelenskiy of a harsh response, which appeared aimed at Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, who has clashed with him before. Kamyshin said on June 4 that nearly half of Kyiv bomb shelters inspected during an initial audit were closed or unfit for use. Ukraine minister in 'disbelief' at closed Kyiv bomb shelters
  + stars: | 2023-06-04 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
KYIV, June 4 (Reuters) - A senior Ukrainian government official expressed "disbelief" on Sunday after learning that nearly half of Kyiv bomb shelters inspected during an initial audit were closed or unfit for use. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy ordered an inspection of all Ukrainian shelters on Friday, a day after three people were killed in Kyiv when they were unable to access one during a Russian air strike. "I greeted with disbelief that fact that half were open and considered ready," he wrote on the Telegram messaging app. "Yesterday, when we selectively checked the shelters in the Obolon district with our mayor, the absolute majority of the shelters were closed." Thursday's deaths caused a public outcry and a promise of a harsh response by Zelenskiy, which appeared aimed at Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko, who has clashed with the president before.

An inspection has found nearly a quarter of Ukraine's air-raid shelters are locked or unusable. A Kyiv woman waiting at a locked shelter was hit by falling missile fragments, her husband said. Kyiv's mayor said there had been "more than a thousand" complaints about dilapidated air-raid shelters. Out of the "over 4,800" shelters, the Ukrainian interior ministry said it had inspected, 252 were locked and a 893 were "unfit for use." A criminal probe has also begun after a 33-year-old woman in Kyiv died while waiting outside a closed shelter during a Russian missile barrage on Thursday, according to the Kyiv regional prosecutor's office.

June 2 (Reuters) - Ukrainian authorities on Friday lifted air raid alerts across most of the nation, and officials in the capital Kyiv said defences appeared to have shot down more than 30 missiles and drones fired by Russia. Moscow has launched around 20 separate missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian cities since the start of May. Kyiv military authorities, writing on Telegram, said Russia had launched drones and cruise missiles at the same time. "According to preliminary information, more than 30 air targets of various types were detected and destroyed in the airspace over and around Kyiv by air defence forces," they said in a statement. Ukraine regularly says its defences knock down the majority of Russia's missiles and drones.

KYIV, Ukraine — Russia targeted the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, yet again with a missile attack in the early hours of Thursday, killing three people, including a mother and child who were not able to get into a shelter, officials said. Ukraine’s general staff headquarters said Kyiv had been attacked by a volley of 10 Iskander ballistic missiles, all of which were shot down. “For 15 months, Russian aggression and terror have been destroying not just buildings, but fundamental human rights — the fundamental rights of our children,” he said. Officials in Kyiv said that some Children’s Day events scheduled for Thursday had been canceled. Andrew E. Kramer and Nicole Tung reported from Kyiv, Ukraine, and Victoria Kim from Seoul.

Another Early Morning Attack in Kyiv Kills Three
  + stars: | 2023-05-31 | by ( Juston Jones | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Russia targeted the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, yet again in the early morning hours on Thursday, with air raid sirens warning residents to take shelter and loud booms from the air defense systems heard throughout the city. Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said on the Telegram messaging app that according to preliminary information from emergency medical workers, three people had been killed, two of them children, and at least 14 injured, probably from debris that fell when the air defense systems shot down incoming drones. Of the injured, nine were hospitalized, the mayor added. It was yet another night when explosions in different parts of the city of 3.6 million jolted people out of bed and sent them scurrying for cover. And Thursday’s strikes seemed to suggest it would be more of the same in June.

CNN —Russia is blaming Ukraine for launching a drone attack on Moscow early Tuesday which reportedly left two people injured and several buildings damaged, a rare incident in the Russian capital after months of war. At least three residential buildings in Moscow were damaged by drones on Tuesday, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing emergency services and residents. Sobyanin added in a subsequent update that investigators had concluded work at the Moscow apartment buildings hit by drones and that evacuated residents would be able to return to their homes. Ukraine has denied direct involvement with Tuesday’s drone attack on Moscow. A view shows a damaged multi-storey apartment block following a reported drone attack in Moscow on Tuesday.

One person died and four were injured when debris from a destroyed Russian projectile hit a high-rise apartment building sparking a fire, Ukrainian officials said. Russian state-owned news agency RIA cited the defence ministry as saying more than one air base had been hit. Moscow said it invaded Ukraine to "denazify" its neighbour and protect Russian speakers. Russia said on Monday the grain deal would no longer be operational unless a U.N. agreement with Moscow to overcome obstacles to Russian grain and fertiliser exports was fulfilled.

KYIV, May 30 (Reuters) - At least one person died and four were injured as a result of Russia's third attack on Kyiv in 24 hours, official said early on Tuesday, with Ukraine's air defence forces destroying more than 20 drones. Photos from Kyiv's officials and Reuters' witnesses showed flames bursting out from the top floors of the building and smoke rising from the roof. According to preliminary information, Tuesday's attacks were carried out only with Iranian-made Shahed drones, Kyiv's military administration said. "The enemy continues to attack the capital," Klitschko said in a post on the Telegram message.
The Russian Defense Ministry said Ukraine was behind what it described as a “terrorist attack” and that all eight were intercepted. Several buildings in Moscow were damaged, and some residents were evacuated early Tuesday, the city’s mayor said. At least two of the drones crashed into residential towers, Russian state media reported, citing state emergency services. It was the 17th assault on the city this month, a spate of attacks that has taken a toll on residents. On Monday, Kyiv was targeted with 11 ballistic missiles shortly after 11 a.m.

A Ukrainian presidential aide said on Monday any post-war settlement should include a demilitarised zone of 100-120 km (62-75 miles) inside Russia along the border with Ukraine. After months of attacks on energy facilities, Russia is now targeting military facilities and supplies to try to disrupt Ukraine's preparations for its counterattack, Kyiv says. Moscow says Ukraine has stepped up drone and sabotage attacks against targets inside Russia as it prepares for the offensive. The governor of Russia's Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, said several frontier settlements were shelled simultaneously by Ukrainian forces on Monday.
In what was Russia's 15th air assault on the city in May and second overnight attack in a row and of similar intensity, there were no major damages or casualties in Kyiv, officials said. The attack follows the largest drone barrage launched on Kyiv the previous night, which killed one person and injured several. In Sunday's attack, 36 drones were downed over Kyiv. In its Monday attack Russia used a combination of Iranian-made Shahed drones and cruise missiles, the city's military administration said. While Ukraine almost never publicly claims responsibility for attacks inside Russia, a series of strikes inside the country have targeted military, energy and transport infrastructure, with Moscow blaming Kyiv for the attacks.

Russia unleashed another wave of attacks early Tuesday on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, killing at least one and prompting evacuations, extending a day of terror for the city’s residents that started with midday strikes. Explosions rang out in different parts of Kyiv overnight, according to local and military officials, sparking a fire in a high-rise building and killing one person. It was not immediately clear whether the damage was from the debris of intercepted attacks or from direct hits. Twenty people were evacuated from the building, where the two upper floors were engulfed in flames, and people might have been trapped in the rubble, the Kyiv city military administration said. Elsewhere in Kyiv, two homes and three cars caught fire from falling debris and four people were hospitalized with injuries, the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko said.

Russian Attack Leaves at Least 1 Dead in Kyiv

At least one person was killed and another was injured on Sunday morning in Kyiv as Russia fired its latest wave of missiles and drones at the Ukrainian capital. A 41-year-old man died after fragments from a drone that was shot down fell on a gas station in western Kyiv, said Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, on his Telegram channel. Ukraine’s armed force have become adept at intercepting the Russian barrages, often shooting down dozens of drones and missiles. As of this month, Ukraine has been using U.S.-made Patriot antimissile systems, one of the most advanced air defense systems, as part of its growing arsenal of weapons. And while some analysts have cast doubt on the abilities of the Kinzhal, Ukraine’s defense against them demonstrates a great capability to withstand Russia’s arsenal, which includes Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones.
Ambassador and South Carolina Republican Gov. Nikki Haley has walked a long and windy road when it comes to her one-time boss, former President Donald Trump. DeSantis’ announcement nears: NBC News’ Dasha Burns reports that Florida Republican Gov. And the New York Times reports DeSantis has been telling donors that out of the three “credible” candidates for president (Trump, himself and President Biden), only he and Biden can win. Raising eyebrows: Virginia GOP Gov.
“I don’t know enough about each individual [rioter] but that’s my rule: If you break the law, you pay the price. Trump has downplayed the events of the Capitol riot and said he’d pardon many of the people found guilty for illegal activities that day. More than 600 people involved in the attack on the Capitol have been convicted of crimes, and more than 480 have been sentenced. For Haley, also a former South Carolina governor, the day has proven a thorny issue— and one that she’s commented on several times, in several different ways since the event. And we can’t let that ever happen again.”But mere weeks later, Haley seemed to soften (although she’s argued these comments are not contradictory).
