CNN —President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly pledged to pardon US Capitol rioters on Day One, but one month before Inauguration Day it’s not clear who among the hundreds of convicted rioters, defendants awaiting trial and remaining fugitives would receive clemency. In a Time Magazine interview conducted last month and published Thursday, the president-elect said he would look at rioters’ cases individually. Some judges in Washington, DC, have also been publicly critical of Trump’s attempts to whitewash the riot’s causes and violence. One major question has been where a line might be drawn among the Capitol riot defendants who would be eligible for Trump’s clemency, and what would qualify as violent versus non-violent actions. One judge, Carl Nichols, a Trump appointee, made pointed comments in a hearing for a Capitol riot defendant two weeks after this year’s election.

WASHINGTON — The FBI failed to take the "basic step" of canvassing its field offices for intelligence ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to a long-awaited Justice Department's inspector general report released Thursday. FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate told investigators that the lack of a canvas was a "basic step that was missed" and that he would have expected it to have occurred, the inspector general's office said. The inspector general did find that the FBI "recognized the potential for violence" and took "significant and appropriate steps" even though the FBI played "only a supporting role in preparing for and responding to" the events of Jan. 6. A total of 13 confidential human sources entered the restricted area around the Capitol, the IG report said, while the remaining 9 never entered the Capitol or restricted area. Smith is still expected to issue a written report on his investigation.

There’s been growing awareness of traumatic brain injury in sports, but TBI among victims of domestic violence is often overlooked and misdiagnosed, experts say. National research about brain injury and domestic violence is lacking. After a concussion, the brain needs time to recover, said Dr. Javier Cárdenas, director and founder of the West Virginia brain injury center. A 2021 University of Nebraska study discovered that many never receive medical treatment for traumatic brain injury. “Anywhere a domestic violence survivor goes, there should be some sort of screening for a concussion and brain injury,” Cardenas said.

Business executives, health insurance industry employees and law enforcement officers have reported facing threats and harassment following the capture this week of the man charged with fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The attorney for the suspect, Luigi Mangione, 26, an Ivy League graduate, has said Mangione intends to plead not guilty to all charges. Social media posts Wednesday showed images of “wanted” posters put up in Manhattan that featured photos of the CEOs of at least two health insurance companies. One of the companies named in the posters declined to comment, while the other did not respond to a request. “I had another one say, ‘This is why y’all’s CEO was shot, and if you’re not careful, you’re going to be next,’” the employee said.

The man charged with killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson posted online in recent years about undergoing spinal surgery and struggling with chronic back pain, numbness and restless sleep, according to what appears to be an archived version of his deleted Reddit account. The archived Reddit posts may shed light on Mangione’s interests and mental state over the last eight years. Although the account has been suspended, NBC News reviewed an archive of its deleted posts and comments spanning several years. NBC News also spoke to several of his friends who said that although they weren’t able to confirm that the Reddit account was Mangione’s, some of the posts aligned with Mangione and his life events. The Reddit posts correspond with the activity of accounts that seem to be linked to Mangione on other social media platforms.

Online history can only tell us so much — but our reactions to it tell us a lot about society. Perhaps the most surprising thing about Luigi Mangione's internet footprint is that there's so much. These dribblings of Mangione's online life came with a tinge of disappointment for anyone who hoped he'd be some left-wing folk hero. Still, it's interesting to look at Mangione's online footprint to at least glean what we can. But Mangione's online trail doesn't seem like that at all.

That inaccuracy was unintentional, the inspector general found. Of those 23, three informants entered the Capitol during the riot and an additional 11 entered the grounds. Republicans on Capitol Hill have repeatedly clashed with top officials at the Justice Department and FBI over the riot, most notably over suggestions that FBI informants helped instigate the attack. Other Republicans, like Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie, have specifically asked the inspector general to include information about how paid informants were used during the riot. “This is not violence orchestrated by FBI sources or agents.”Those theories have public support too.

A bankruptcy judge on Tuesday rejected a bid by The Onion’s parent company to buy Alex Jones’ far-right media empire, including the website Infowars, ruling that the auction process was unfair. A rival bidder associated with Jones, First United American Cos., offered $3.5 million in cash, or twice as much cash as The Onion’s parent company. In testimony before the bankruptcy court in Houston, Murray defended the auction process he used. He said his only goal was to maximize the payout going to the unsecured creditors of Jones’ company.
