Candace Fails screamed for someone in the Texas hospital to help her pregnant daughter. Fails, who would have seen her daughter turn 20 this Friday, still cannot understand why Crain’s emergency was not treated like an emergency. Passed nearly four decades ago, it requires emergency rooms to stabilize patients in medical crises. Eight years earlier, the Texas Medical Board found that he had failed to diagnose appendicitis in one patient and syphilis in another. Last year, he sent a letter threatening to prosecute a doctor who had received court approval to provide an emergency abortion for a Dallas woman.

Conversations around Vice President Kamala Harris, by contrast, continued to focus largely around broader and more conventional stories about her campaign. The poll, conducted by SSRS and Verasight on behalf of a research team from CNN, Georgetown University and the University of Michigan, was fielded from October 25-28. Georgetown University, University of Michigan and s3mc.org“Numerous former officers in the 2016-2020 Trump administration are sounding alarms that Trump will dismantle democracy if he’s elected,” wrote one Democratic-leaning independent. Georgetown University, University of Michigan and s3mc.orgWhen the survey asked respondents what they’d been hearing about Harris, the words “campaign,” “rally,” “interview,” “polls” and “ad” all cracked the top 10. Overall, the sentiment behind the words Americans used in describing what they’d heard about both Trump and Harris remained more negative than positive, with the sentiment around Harris continuing to dip from the earliest days of her campaign.

Walking pneumonia infections rose nationwide as kids returned to school this fall. Look out for a persistent cough, fever, and fatigueHistorically, walking pneumonia has been most common among school-aged children. People who've recently had the flu are also at increased risk for developing walking pneumonia. In rare cases, walking pneumonia can prompt brain swelling, kidney issues, and difficulty breathing, and people with lung issues, and weakened immune systems may be especially at risk of hospitalization with walking pneumonia. Without any testing, the daughter was diagnosed with walking pneumonia, and prescribed a Z-Pak (azithromycin).

Election officials in pivotal battleground states including Pennsylvania, Michigan and Arizona have all tried – and largely failed – to fact-check Musk in real time. Election officials say they are simply outmatched up against Musk’s followers and the X algorithm. “Election officials, they have a very hard job – their job is to be election officials not to be Tweeters,” said Renée DiResta, an expert in disinformation and an associate research professor at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy. Election officials in Pennsylvania are similarly attempting to fact-check Musk’s false claims on X but acknowledge those efforts are unlikely to stymie the spread of election lies. In Georgia, election officials see little point in trying to engage with Musk directly, instead turning to the method they relied on in 2020 to beat back misinformation: Regular press conferences with election officials rebutting the latest election falsehoods.

New York CNN —The last three years have upended everything about the way we expect the economy to work. But the pandemic-era inflationary period played out unlike any other in history, and wealthy people made out like bandits. And that may be because the only real inflation we’ve seen in decades was a multi-year profit bonanza for them. And that has provided a permission structure for some wealthy Trump supporters to shrug their shoulders at his inflationary economic agenda. But it won’t be the same flavor of profit-driven inflation we’ve seen over the past three years.

CNN —Up to 35 ISIS operatives were killed in US strikes against multiple ISIS camps in Syria on Monday evening, the US military announced on Wednesday. “US Central Command forces conducted a series of strikes against several known ISIS camps in Syria, in the early evening of Oct. 28, resulting in up to 35 ISIS operatives killed,” the release, posted on X, said. “The strikes targeted multiple ISIS locations in the Syrian desert, targeting multiple ISIS senior leaders.”It is unclear if the targeted senior leaders were included in the 35 operatives killed. Monday’s strikes are the latest in what appears to be an uptick of operations against ISIS in the Middle East, which have now resulted in dozens of operatives being killed. Despite a difficult quarter, McDonald’s looks resilient in the face of various pressures, analysts say — something the company shares with U.S. consumers overall. “The spotlight is always on McDonald’s because it’s so big” and something of a “bellwether,” she said. That spurred former President Donald Trump to sling fries this month at a Philadelphia-area McDonald’s in a photo op. Overall, just 30% of registered voters think Trump will accept the results of the election and concede if he loses, while 73% say that Vice President Kamala Harris would accept an election loss. But that rises to 20% among registered voters who support Trump, compared with only 3% who feel that way among Harris supporters. The CNN Poll was conducted by SSRS online and by telephone October 20-23, 2024, among 1,704 registered voters nationwide drawn from a probability-based panel. Likely voters include all registered voters in the poll weighted for their predicted likelihood of voting in this year’s election. No E. coli was detected in samples of beef patties used in McDonald's Quarter Pounders that have been linked to a deadly outbreak, a company spokesperson said Sunday, citing tests by the Colorado Agriculture Department. The department has no further plans to test the beef patties, the company spokesperson said, and the patties have been ruled out as the source of the outbreak. The most likely source of contamination was slivered onions from a single source, the company spokesperson said, citing the Food and Drug Administration. McDonald’s stopped sourcing slivered onions from that source — Taylor Farms Colorado Springs — indefinitely on Sunday, the company spokesperson said, days after it removed the Taylor Farms onions from its supply chain. The McDonald's spokesperson said the company is confident asking beef suppliers to provide a fresh supply of patties for distribution.
