LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County’s annual count of homeless residents began Tuesday night — a crucial part of the region’s efforts to confront the crisis of tens of thousands of people living on the streets. Up to 6,000 volunteers with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority fanned out for the effort’s main component, the unsheltered street tally. About 46,200 were within the city of Los Angeles, where public frustration has grown as tents have proliferated on sidewalks and in parks and other locations. City Hall, the City Council and the LA County Board of Supervisors have said they intend to work together to tackle the crisis. The results of the LA County homeless count are expected to be released in late spring or early summer.

Middle Tennessee has one metaphorical foot in the Midwest and one in the Deep South. We expect a certain amount of weather whiplash here, even without factoring in the extremities of climate change, but January has been a carnival ride. Thunderstorms and tornadoes followed by brutal cold and then by snow the likes of which we haven’t seen in years. Last week, temperatures dropped into the single digits at night and didn’t rise much higher during the day. Many people lose work they can’t afford to lose, while others risk their lives to get to jobs they aren’t allowed to miss.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Arson was the cause of a massive weekend fire that charred and indefinitely closed a vital section of a Los Angeles freeway, causing major traffic headaches for hundreds of thousands of commuters, California authorities said. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A journalist and advocate who rose from homelessness and addiction to serve as a spokesperson for Philadelphia's most vulnerable was shot and killed at his home early Monday, police said. Josh Kruger, 39, was shot seven times at about 1:30 a.m. and collapsed in the street after seeking help, police said. Police believe the door to his Point Breeze home was unlocked or the shooter knew how to get in, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. (AP) — Sacramento’s top prosecutor is suing the city’s leaders over failure to cleanup homeless encampments, escalating a monthslong dispute with leaders in California’s capital city. A group of residents and business owners also filed a companion lawsuit against the city. The lawsuit includes accounts from dozens of city residents living around 14 encampments. Roughly three-quarters of the county’s homeless population is unsheltered, and the majority of that group are living on Sacramento streets. City Attorney Susana Alcala Wood's office has also repeatedly urged Ho to work with the city to address the issue, she said.
