His research, which hasn't been peer-reviewed, found that about 9.5% of coders were "ghost engineers.' AdvertisementMeasuring output is difficultDenisov-Blanch calls these workers "ghost engineers," defined as software engineers who are only 10% as productive or less than their median colleague. More remote workers were superstar codersMusk now aims to apply that same ruthless efficiency to the federal government. On one hand, he found that the prevalence of "ghost engineers" among remote workers was more than double that among in-person workers. But he also found that many more of the most effective engineers — employees whose performance was at least five times better than their median colleague — were working remotely.

In our society and our culture, and therefore in our politics, there is a growing comfort in the “ends justifies the means” mentality. (Trump’s pick, Pete Hegseth, has denied an alleged sexual assault described in a 2017 police report and was never charged.) “You crossed the line,” Holly Hunter’s character screams at William Hurt’s character, who responds: “It’s hard not to cross it. And wouldn’t it be a shame if the electorate decided that politics now belongs to the low-character crowd. For what it’s worth, I do think our political leaders and public servants should be of a higher-than-average moral character.

Ukraine's defense ministry issued a recall of 120mm artillery shells this week, citing defects in a recently delivered batch of rounds. The defective 120mm rounds — light artillery shells that Ukraine typically uses in mortars — were first reported in early November by Censor.Net, a local media outlet run by journalist Yuriy Butusov. Ukroboronprom and the Ukrainian Defense Ministry did not respond to requests sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider. Globally, Ukraine's allies have also struggled to quickly scale up production of artillery shells. On November 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said domestic factories had produced 2.5 million artillery shells and mortar rounds in 2024 alone.

The domestic box office is poised for its biggest Thanksgiving haul since the pandemic thanks to a Polynesian princess, a pair of witches and a revenge-fueled gladiator. Disney's "Moana 2" is set to hit theaters Wednesday and generate between $120 million and $150 million in box office receipts in the U.S. and Canada through Sunday. Box office analysts believe the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, which runs from Wednesday to Sunday, should easily clear $200 million in ticket sales and could even become the second- or third-highest Thanksgiving period in cinematic history. After ruling the Thanksgiving box office for years with titles from Pixar and Disney Animation, it's failed to live up to expectations with its recent string of releases. In 2016, "Moana" opened over the Thanksgiving holiday, generating $82.1 million.

Meanwhile, active mutual funds lost money in all but one year (2021); they shed $344 billion in the first 10 months of 2024. "We see [active ETFs] as the growth engine of active management," said Bryan Armour, director of passive strategies research for North America at Morningstar. As a result, passive funds have attracted more annual investor money than active funds for the past nine years, according to Morningstar. watch nowBut, for investors who prefer active management — especially in more niche corners of the investment market — active ETFs often have a cost advantage versus active mutual funds, experts said. "They are a tiny portion of active net assets but growing rapidly at a time when active mutual funds have seen pretty significant outflows," he said.

President-elect Donald Trump has called for cutting the corporate tax rate – and a slate of companies could stand to benefit, according to an analysis from Wolfe Research. That would be a reduction from the current corporate tax rate of 21%. A corporate tax rate of 18% would increase S & P 500 earnings per share by $5, while a 15% rate would lift earnings per share by $10, he said. Senyek's team identified companies that could see the greatest impact on their earnings per share from a lower tax rate. Wolfe also highlighted Amazon in its list of companies that could benefit from a lower corporate tax rate.
