CNN —Two US service members were injured in Iraq in a joint US-Iraqi raid overnight that killed “multiple ISIS operatives,” according to a Defense Department spokesperson. A defense official said Wednesday that both service members had been transferred to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and were still in stable condition. “Overnight, CENTCOM [US Central Command] and Iraqi security forces conducted a partner raid in Iraq targeting several senior ISIS leaders,” said Ryder. Iraq’s Higher Military Commission had aimed to propose an end date for Operation Inherent Resolve, the US military operation combatting ISIS. “We continue to focus our efforts on specifically targeting those members of ISIS who are seeking to conduct external operations outside of Iraq and Syria and those ISIS members attempting to break out ISIS members in detention in an attempt to reconstitute their forces.”Earlier this month, the head of the United Kingdom’s domestic security service MI5 said that ISIS, along with al Qaeda, are presenting a “resurgent” threat.

The charges made public Tuesday against the official, Ruhollah Bazghandi, are the first to accuse an Iranian government official by name in the alleged plot to kill journalist Masih Alinejad. Prosecutors allege they were enlisted to carry out the assassination of Alinejad in the United States. Bazghandi allegedly discussed the plot to murder Alinejad with a second defendant, Haj Taher. Taher, in turn, communicated about the plot defendants Hossein Sedighi and Mohammad Forouzan, prosecutors say, including about payment for the murder. Russia is unlikely to offer military intervention against Israel on behalf of the Iranians, Saab said, given it is already "too bogged down in Ukraine." In return for Iran's support, Russia has bolstered Iran's military capabilities in several areas, they noted: "Iran has made notable progress in acquiring advanced conventional weaponry from Russia, allowing it to achieve some of its defense officials' long-standing goals. Iranian protesters shout anti-Israeli slogans while burning an Israeli flag in a celebration for Iran's missile attack against Israel, in Tehran, Iran, on October 1, 2024. That shared antipathy toward the U.S. and desire to create a "new world order" are what largely binds Iran and Russia. Russia cannot — and will not — save Iran in its confrontation with Israel and the United States," he noted.

Advanced air defenses and anti-ship cruise missiles may also be on the table. Iran has ordered Su-35 fighters and also wants S-400 Triumf air defenses to, among other things, face Israel's superior missiles and air force. If all these deals do go forward, they would enhance the military capabilities of Iran and its allied militias. While the type of equipment was not specified, it could be the S-400 Iran has long sought. Iran is seeking Russia's S-400 air defenses.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Saturday the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar will not halt the "Axis of Resistance" and that Hamas would live on. "His loss is undoubtedly painful for the Axis of Resistance, but this front did not cease advancing with the martyrdom of prominent figures," Khamenei said in a statement. The "Axis of Resistance", built up with years of Iranian support, includes Hamas, the Lebanese Hezbollah group, the Houthi movement in Yemen, and various Shi'ite groups in Iraq and Syria. The groups describe themselves as the resistance to Israel and U.S. influence in the Middle East. "As always, we will remain by the side of the sincere fighters and combatants, by God's grace and help," Khamenei said.

If Netanyahu is feeling that pressure, that wasn't evident from his comments on Friday. International insistence that the Israeli government ease the suffering in Gaza had already intensified in the weeks before Sinwar was killed. Domestically, that may be more of a complex dance for Netanyahu, who heads a still-fragile coalition comprised of many of Israel’s most hawkish lawmakers. Until then, we will intensify military pressure,” Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich — whom both major U.K. political parties have considered sanctioning this year — said in a post on X. Before Hamas' attack, Netanyahu was scrambling to keep onside the disparate right-wing and religious parties in his fractious ruling coalition while facing huge protests against him.

As has been the case for previous Woodward books, those who don’t come out well from his reporting publicly dismiss it. Woodward notes that neither Biden nor Trump spoke to him for this book, but he still got great access. It’s clear from a close reading of “War” that almost every top national security official in the Biden administration spoke with him. The Biden administration has halted the shipment of massive 2,000-pound bombs to Israel, but otherwise, the large flow of American weapons to the Jewish state continues. Coats told Woodward, “It’s still a mystery to me how he deals with Putin and what he says to Putin.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Bracing itself for a retaliatory strike for last week’s ballistic missile attack, Iran has been urging its Arab neighbors not to allow Israel to use their airspace as part of any potential attack, two diplomats from Gulf nations told NBC News Friday. Israel has vowed to respond to the strikes and while the nature and timing of the attack remain unclear, Iran warned countries that do help Israel in any way could potentially become part of a war, one of the diplomats said. His death came days after several Hezbollah leaders were killed by exploding pagers and walkie-talkies, an attack which Israel was widely believed to have been behind. Both militant groups are backed by Tehran and Pezeshkian has portrayed Iran as “exercising restraint” because it waited for two months after Haniyeh's death before launching the attack on Israel. NBC News has reached out to the Israel Defense Forces for comment but has not received a response.

After Iran launched approximately 200 ballistic missiles at Israel last week, U.S. military officials discussed options for joining Israel in its retaliation against Iran, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the discussions. The U.S. has long supported Israel with intelligence and that support could continue during Israel’s retaliatory strikes against Iran, the two officials said. Senior U.S. military officials have also discussed conducting very limited strikes against Iranian targets, the two officials said. Strikes inside Iran have been discussed, as have strikes on targets outside Iran, though strikes of any kind are less likely than intelligence sharing, the officials said. And U.S. officials say Israel has made it clear that it is not ruling out a response during the Yom Kippur holiday this week.

Experts told BI that Israel still lacks a long-term strategic vision on how to end the war. But while Israel may have military superiority in the region, it lacks a clear, long-term strategic vision to end conflict in the Middle East, according to security experts. It's clear the Israel Defense Forces have achieved a series of tactical gains in recent weeks, but they still lack a clear military strategy, security analysts told Business Insider. "Neither outcome achieves Israel's security objectives, which would represent a defeat for the IDF and could threaten the survival of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government," Pfaff said. The problem may be that Israel's security doctrine has long been based on short wars.

Iran fired hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones at Israel in retaliation for an attack on an Iranian diplomatic facility in Syria. The global economy is entering a "dangerous time" like never before as Middle East tensions remain elevated, said S&P Global's vice chairman Daniel Yergin. When asked if the global economy is on the precipice of another supply shock resulting from Middle East tensions, Yergin said it's a precarious time for markets. "The betting is that the Israelis would not attack, try to attack, the nuclear facilities at this time.
