SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A man sentenced to death for a 1998 murder is now free, two years after the Oregon Court of Appeals reversed the conviction. The Oregon Innocence Project on Wednesday accused the state of committing a “heinous injustice” in its handling of the case. Menopause-centered offerings vary widely, from mindfulness techniques to herbal remedies to nutritional guidance and exercise. Sometimes, the most important activity is just the chance to bond with other women facing the same issues, experts say. “There’s a great healing and discovery when a group of people are going through a similar circumstance,” said Melissa Biggs Bradley, the founder and chief executive of Indagare, a membership-based travel company that recently announced its first midlife and menopause retreat. After a health screening, I was given a tailored agenda to nurture and balance my aging, changing body. First up was a personalized strength training session — squats, lunges, planks and resistance band exercises — to remedy my joint pain and build bone.

CNN —Opposites are said to attract, but the poles between Hailey and Justin Bieber couldn’t be further apart — at least sartorially. Was Hailey off to a sophisticated dinner and drinks, while Justin had just nipped out for a packet of M&Ms and some laundry detergent? Hailey, on the other hand, has worked to market herself as a modern-day It Girl, a title which unsurprisingly demands a captivating wardrobe. Justin and Hailey’s clashing ensembles sparked a thorny discussion on the semiotics of dressing as a pair. Had Justin committed to a pair of slacks or a button-down, his partner could have had her moment with no distractions.

The finding unleashed a mad scramble to find out what exactly the parasite was, Canberra Hospital infectious disease expert Sanjaya Senanayake told CNN. “We were able to send the live wiggling worm to him, and he was able to look at it and immediately identify it,” Senanayake said. In this case, the patient was likely an accidental host of the worm, Senanayake said. “There’s more opportunities for humans, domestic animals and wild animals to interact with each other and the vegetation that’s out there. And of those emerging infections, about 75% were zoonotic, meaning there has been transmission from the animal world to the human world – including coronaviruses.

This means that women of color often go without adequate care during menopause, signaling to them that their suffering is insignificant, said Dr. Stephanie Faubion, medical director for the Menopause Society and a director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Women’s Health. Researchers have followed a group of more than 3,000 women in perimenopause and menopause for decades and have found a few key differences: Black and Hispanic women reach menopause earlier than white, Chinese and Japanese women. They also experience certain menopausal symptoms for 10 or more years — almost twice as long as do white, Chinese and Japanese women. But researchers have found that Black women are more likely to experience more intense and more frequent hot flashes; Black women also endure them for more years than those of other races. When Anjum Shah, a 55-year-old city planner in Orlando, Fla., started having hot flashes at 48, she knew it was connected to menopause.

I don’t usually wear lipstick. With tears in her eyes, she said there’d been no one serious in her life since her marriage ended, and she was resigned to dying alone. There I was, telling a friend half my age that sometimes, no matter how much you want it, love may never show up. My life was half over, and I was on the express train to Lonelyville: a singles room in the nursing home. I had to change course, but it wasn’t as simple as just “getting back out there.”

Dr. Leana Wen: It’s important to distinguish between sports drinks and energy drinks. There are also energy drinks that are often, and unfortunately, confused with sports drinks. Those consuming energy drinks instead of sports drinks or water may become dehydrated. This could be because of confusion between sports drinks and energy drinks, so people should be careful to choose the beverage that’s appropriate for their purpose. And really distinguish between sports drinks that replenish electrolytes and fluids versus energy drinks.

CNN —The Earth recently recorded its hottest day ever – a record experts warn will likely be repeatedly broken as the climate crisis drives temperatures higher and higher. Here’s what happens to your body in extreme heat, what you need to watch out for and how to stay safe. “The higher the humidity, the lower temperatures you need for extreme heat,” Linden said. High body temperatures can lead to damage to the brain and other vital organs, the CDC says. Try to find air conditioning, or places in your area where you can go to stay cool, according to Ready.gov.

“All-American Girl” debuted on ABC in 1994, though it lasted only 19 episodes. There were so few Asian American stories emerging — save occasional indie breakouts like “Better Luck Tomorrow” — that the “initial stabs” had to be “be kind of like our best foot forward — putting on our best face, showing them what we can do,” Yu said. “There was this underlying feeling of ‘Don’t air out our dirty laundry, don’t let them see us fighting,’” he added. They called it the “rep sweats” — the anxiety they felt any time they watched an Asian American onscreen. It was a pressure emanating from the fact that those appearances were so few and far between.

However, experts who treat and study menopause say the study is unable to draw a direct connection to later-life dementia and that the overall benefits of hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, far outweigh the risks for many patients. “One finding in the study was a link between dementia and the use of HRT for a very short time span, under a year. Researchers compared people with dementia who had used hormone therapy, even briefly, with those from the larger group who had not. The chance of being diagnosed with dementia went up with years spent on HRT, the study found. When women used 12 or more years of hormone therapy, the association with a diagnosis of dementia rose to 74%, Pourhadi said.

“Specifically, what we’re talking about are hot flashes and the accompanying night sweats because those are the most common,” Faubion said. “This is the first-of-its-kind medication, a neurokinin 3 (NK3) receptor antagonist, that tackles moderate to severe hot flashes where they begin — the brain,” she said. Remote work is dwindling and in-person work is getting costly, employees say. Things like new office clothes, lunch, and commuting, are all adding up. Frustrated workers are sounding off that cost of office clothes, daily lunches, commuting, and more are all adding up as they start going into the office multiple times per week. On Tuesday, Elon Musk described remote work as "morally wrong," and other industry execs are also moving away from policies that would allow employees to work from home. Sometimes it's just a pot of lentil soup, but it works," Chou wrote.

CNN —Symptoms linked to menopause such as hot flashes, night sweats and sleep disturbances can add up to billions of dollars in medical expenses and lost productivity in the workplace, according to a study published Wednesday in journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Researchers surveyed about 5,000 women ages 45 to 60 who are primary care patients at the Mayo Clinic; 4,440 of the women were employed at the time of the study. The survey, given in 2021, assessed the women’s symptoms using the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS). Researchers found that the mean total MRS score was 12.1, which indicates a “moderate menopause symptom burden.”“Menopause symptoms pose workplace challenges that may manifest as higher levels of lost work productivity (presenteeism), lost days of work (absenteeism), and greater numbers of outpatient medical visits,” the researchers wrote in the study. “Clinicians need to ask women about menopause symptoms and offer guidance and treatment, and employers need to create and implement workplace strategies and policies to help women navigate this universal life transition,” Faubion said.

Coactive helps companies glean insights from unstructured visual content like photos and videos. Media and consumer retail customers can flag inappropriate content or search through visual data. This bomber aligns with his post-lockdown mood: These days he hankers for clothes that are “simple, clean, versatile and as comfortable as athleisure—but more dressed up.”A dressy bomber? Though this style of aviator jacket has typically skewed casual and utilitarian, it has lately been reborn as a sophisticate.

TRYING TO SPOT casual clothes at the recent menswear shows was a bit like playing “Where’s Waldo?” Sober, dressier items so outnumbered once-dominant streetwear staples on the catwalks that if you spied a hoodie, jeans or flashy sneakers, you felt like you’d won a game. This season belonged to investment pieces: sharp-shouldered suits, chunky polished-leather shoes, heirloom-quality coats. Guys bored of schlubby sweats and wary of splashing out money on overly loud, quick-to-date clothes when the cost of living is wincingly high. Less clear: How they will fare in the real world, when they hang off average-size mortals, not long-limbed models. One stylist friend announced, half-seriously, that he feared these coats would make his shorter clients look like kids who’d raided their dads’ closets.
