Why NBC could be a perfect fit for the NBABarring a major upset, ESPN and WBD will continue to broadcast NBA games. The network used to broadcast NBA games nationally starting in 1954, and Comcast still shows games on its regional-sports networks in five markets. Comcast-subsidiary Sky Sports also aired NBA games in the United Kingdom for four years starting in 2019. Moffett, the media analyst and MoffettNathanson cofounder, told BI he sees NBC entering the bidding war for NBA media rights if only to assist its streamer. Unlike ESPN and TNT, NBC doesn't necessarily need NBA games.

In that majority lies a pressing question: How will the introduction of artificial intelligence impact hourly workers? 'Deskless workers' and technologyRegardless of the perspective, hourly workers and the people who manage them are actively seeking technology solutions to help streamline their workflow. For example, robotics-enabled sorting and small item picking is infiltrating the logistics industry, which is traditionally staffed by hourly workers on the warehouse floor. "This will be the decade of hourly workers that are focused on delivery of services that require human touch," she said. One thing that hourly workers, like all workers, aim for is a sense of meaning on the job.

At the World Bank’s annual meetings last year in Morocco, the organization’s new president, Ajay Banga, outlined a sweeping vision for how he wanted to rid the world of poverty while keeping the planet habitable. The challenge is related to an investment that the World Bank made a decade ago in a chain of schools in Kenya. The educational project was partially funded through the International Finance Corporation, the bank’s investment arm. It became a source of controversy when allegations emerged in 2020 about widespread sexual abuse at the schools, prompting an investigation by the bank’s internal watchdog. has been reviewing a revised “action plan” that could take effect as soon as this week.

Apple is taking a cue from Google and Meta by experimenting with a new AI-powered way to buy its App Store ads, according to two people familiar with the matter. Commentators have previously speculated that Apple would soon bring ads to Maps, Apple TV+, and its Books app. Most of that revenue is derived from its App Store search ads, though it has recently made progress in other areas. Apple now offers sponsorships and other ad integrations within its broadcasts of MLS Soccer on Apple TV. It has also made key hires in areas including adtech and TV ad sales, which suggests it may have bigger advertising ambitions, such as following rivals like Netflix and Apple by adding an advertising tier to Apple TV+.

America has gone from a pandemic crash and recession fears to stocks at record highs and an economic boom. Lockdowns, wars, shortages, inflation, interest rates, day trading, and AI have all played a role. Noam Galai/SOPA/Getty ImagesMany Americans also socked away money during the pandemic, as they saved on expenses like travel and live entertainment. Stimulus-fueled demand, combined with pandemic and war-related supply disruptions, caused inflation to spike to a 40-year high of 9.1% in June that year. The Fed swiftly raised interest rates to rein in the price growth, lifting them from virtually zero to upward of 5% in under 18 months, and hasn't touched them since.

But how will patent protections apply to inventions made with the help of AI tools, particularly generative AI? In connection with training an AI system, what level of planning will be required? “A natural person who only presents a problem to an AI system may not be a proper inventor” of something, the USPTO said. In that case, the USPTO had rejected the patent applications of an inventor who had given his AI system sole credit for the inventions. The inventorship guidelines will help everyone understand the boundaries of patent protections as AI is increasingly used in the inventive process.

What New Love Does to Your Brain

New love can consume our thoughts, supercharge our emotions and, on occasion, cause us to act out of character. “People pine for love, they live for love, they kill for love and they die for love,” said Helen Fisher, a senior research fellow at the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University. Their findings suggest that song lyrics and dramatic plotlines don’t overstate it: New love can mess with our heads. Experts define “romantic love” as a connection deeper than lust, but distinct from the attachment associated with a long-term partnership. These regions are also activated by drugs like cocaine, leading some experts to liken love to a sort of “natural addiction.”

Carolyn Kaster/AP/FileUS national security officials have to weigh whether publicly calling attention to disinformation might inadvertently amplify the very message they’re trying to bat down. In both scenarios, federal officials favored a muted public response, largely choosing to let state and local governments take the lead. State and local officials run elections and are more trusted voices in their communities, but how can federal officials act decisively to support them? “It’s a trick box,” said Adam Hickey, who worked on election security issues for the Justice Department’s National Security Division. “[W]e prioritize tabletop exercises that integrate the range of cyber, physical, and operational threats election officials may encounter,” Conley said in a statement to CNN.

The OpenAI chief has been talking to prospective investors including the United Arab Emirates government about his proposals to help solve the global chip shortage. One potential backer Altman's been courting is the UAE's Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed al Nahyan, with the pair meeting recently, the Journal reported, citing unnamed sources. Altman is said to be presenting his idea as a partnership with OpenAI, chip makers, and investors who can finance GPU chip plants. The unanimous FCC vote extends anti-robocall rules to cover unsolicited AI deepfake calls by recognizing those voices as “artificial” under a federal law governing telemarketing and robocalling. The FCC’s move gives state attorneys general more legal tools to pursue illegal robocallers that use AI-generated voices to fool Americans, the FCC said. “Bad actors are using AI-generated voices in unsolicited robocalls to extort vulnerable family members, imitate celebrities, and misinform voters,” said FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel in a statement. In 2021, the FCC announced a $5 million proposed fine against right-wing operatives Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman for allegedly using illegal robocalls to discourage voting in the 2020 election. As the FCC updates its interpretation of federal law, some US lawmakers have proposed revising the law directly to further deter illegal robocallers.

Insurance companies represent a big opportunity for private equity firms, who invest with the accumulated premiums paid by millions of everyday Americans. It's not just insurance clients that benefit from AI to bring more transparency to the cloudy private credit market. With private credit, insurance firms can invest in a more diversified set of assets with greater yield (and, albeit risk) than public credit markets, like vanilla corporate bonds. And because insurance companies often have long-term horizons with their financial obligations to policyholders, they can invest in less-liquid asset classes, like private credit. But to win more insurance clients, Blackstone must compete with the likes of Apollo Global Management, Carlyle, and KKR, which have also been keen on insurance.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is urging the US Supreme Court to reverse the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling that removed him from that state’s ballot. “The Court should reverse the Colorado decision because President Trump is not even subject to section 3, as the President is not an ‘officer of the United States’ under the Constitution. And even if President Trump were subject to section 3 he did not ‘engage in’ anything that qualifies as ‘insurrection,’” Trump’s attorneys argued. The US Supreme Court agreed earlier this month to hear the case, accepting an appeal brought by Trump. The Oregon Supreme Court dismissed a similar case last week, telling the anti-Trump challengers that they might be able to refile it later, based on what the US Supreme Court does in the Colorado case.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella talks AI at Davos

CNN —Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said during the World Economic Forum in Switzerland on Tuesday he was “hopeful” and “optimistic” about the future of artificial intelligence. In a conversation with Klaus Schwab, chairperson of the World Economic Forum, Nadella discussed where he believes the AI industry is headed and the safety guardrails needed in place. “As a digital technology industry, the biggest lesson learned perhaps for us is that we have to take the unintended consequences of any new technology along with all the benefits,” Nadella said. At the same time, AI companies and lawmakers continue to call for sweeping regulations of the technology. Nadella said this is a fundamental change seen the industry over the last 10 years.
