Advertisers plan to withdraw from X in record numbers
  + stars: | 2024-09-05 | by ( Hanna Ziady | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
A global survey by market research firm Kantar found that a net 26% of marketers plan to decrease their spending on X in 2025, the biggest recorded pullback from any major global ad platform. Only 4% of marketers overall think X ads provide “brand safety” — certainty that their ads won’t appear alongside extreme content — compared with 39% for Google ads, Kantar said in a report Thursday. The findings suggest that Musk’s charm offensive at the world’s largest annual advertising festival, Cannes Lions, in June hasn’t succeeded. According to the report, YouTube remains the ad platform marketers most prefer, while, for consumers, Amazon and TikTok share the top spot. Brazil blocked X over the weekend following an order by the Supreme Court because Musk refused to appoint a new legal representative in the country.

After I told him I didn't know any of them, he said they'd investigate and help me clear my name. But because I was a suspect, I needed to send daily updates about my whereabouts and activities to ensure I didn't flee. He agreed the next day but said I needed to send money for collateral to ensure I didn't escape while he was representing me. I feel like I'm the scammer because I scammed my family, in a sense, by lying to them. But it said sometimes clients neglect warnings, lie about the purposes of withdrawals, and proceed with the transactions anyway.

New York CNN —For months, former President Donald Trump has been sitting on a social media fortune that he couldn’t touch. As recently as May 9, Trump’s dominant stake of 114.75 million shares of Trump Media was valued at $6.2 billion. Despite the recent selloff, Trump Media is still valued at nearly $4 billion. Once the lock-up period expires, Trump will no longer be prohibited from borrowing against his stake in Trump Media. Experts say that if Trump does borrow against his Truth Social stake, he may not be required to disclose it.

The basic problem: It's unclear how these free services could support new, Hollywood-style programming even if they wanted to. Now, with YouTube making the jump to TV screens and "free, ad-supported TV" (FAST) services having a moment, where does that leave Hollywood? Tech and legacy media will battle over free TV in the coming monthsLooking ahead, the major players already ahead in free TV will likely continue to gain share. Free streaming may seem like a way for Hollywood to claw back viewers. If not, it's hard to say what winning in the battle for free TV will actually get them.

Cooling global growth, continued geopolitical risks, and uncertainty around US election outcomes mean it could be a choppy ride for the next few months. But if US economic data stabilizes while global growth slows, as Bharadwaj expects, European currencies could be set for a violent snapback. "I do think that global growth right now is not holding up from our data trackers. "And in fact, we actually track global growth upgrades versus downgrades. And after a very long time, global growth downgrades are outpacing global growth upgrades, which indicates to me that even the global growth is not as rosy as markets are currently pricing it to be."

LONDON — European stocks are expected to rally at the start of the new trading week, with global markets keeping a close eye on U.S. inflation data out Wednesday. European markets are set to follow in the footsteps of their counterparts in Asia-Pacific, where markets were mostly higher overnight. The rally comes after global stock markets see-sawed last week with steep sell-offs followed by a sharp rebound. U.S. stock futures were lower as investors awaited key inflation data due later this week. In focus is the U.S. producer price index report for July, out Tuesday, followed by the country's latest consumer price index data on Wednesday, with investors looking for signs that price growth is stabilizing.

U.S. equity futures fell on Sunday evening as investors braced for key inflation data, after almost completely reversing its violent market rout last week. S&P 500 futures dipped 0.08% and Nasdaq 100 futures inched lower by 0.05%. Fear often works in our favor as stock market investors. "Another round of good [inflation] data could help calm fears that the Fed is potentially losing the plot," Cox said. "Retail sales and retailer earnings may show that fears of a job market slowdown are overblown," she added.

U.S. stocks have whipsawed since last Friday, with a sharp sell-off followed by a bounce-back on Thursday. This led the S&P 500 to its strongest session since 2022, leaving it around the 5,310 level. The S&P 500 is facing a key test level as the consensus view of a soft landing for the U.S. economy reaches a "make or break" point, according to one strategist. But essentially what that means is a bull trap squeeze, where there's a lot of leveraged, bullish views on [the] back of a consensus soft landing view, which ultimately is now make or break." William described a bull trap as a selling point in which bullish consensus is proven wrong.

Japan stocks rebounded sharply on Tuesday after the Nikkei 225 and the Topix dropped over 12% in the previous session. The Bank of Japan raising rates to their highest level since 2008 on July 30 caused the yen to strengthen to a seven-month high, pressurizing stocks. Markets globally were also spooked by fears of a U.S. recession stoked by a weaker-than-expected jobs report. Real wages in Japan also grew 1.1% in June compared with a year ago, the first time that wages have risen in 26 months. Strong wage growth offers more room for the Bank of Japan to tighten its monetary policy.

LONDON — U.S. stocks are on course to open in the red Monday, with Japanese stocks suffering their worst day of trading since the 1980s and a global equities sell-off intensifying over fears of a U.S. economic slowdown. The Nikkei’s 12.4% fall marked the worst day for the Japanese index since 1987’s “Black Monday” — the sudden and unexpected stock market crash that raised fears of a depression. Noriko Hayashi / Bloomberg via Getty ImagesIn recent weeks, rising concerns around a potential U.S. recession have spooked investors. A rise in the value of the Japanese yen against the U.S. dollar — making Japanese assets more expensive for holders of other currencies — has also likely played a role in the selling. Even so, some investors put their money into U.S. Treasury bonds — so-called ‘haven’ assets that act as stores of wealth in volatile moments.

Carry trades refer to operations wherein an investor borrows in a currency with low interest rates, such as the Japanese yen, and reinvests the proceeds in higher-yielding assets elsewhere. On Friday, a report on American jobs showed a considerable slowdown in hiring, prompting a sell-off in U.S. markets. The Fed is expected to start cutting rates, which are at a more-than-two-decade high, later this year. The currency’s rise spooked investors, some of whom feared a stronger yen would spell the end of a more-than-yearlong rally in Japanese stocks that had been driven by a weakened currency. A popular trade among some investors involved borrowing in yen, and then investing it in markets like the U.S. But as the strength of the dollar this year began to ebb, profits from that trade also started to reverse course.

Here's Jim Cramer's market sell-off playbook

watch nowCNBC's Jim Cramer shared his playbook for the brutal global market sell-off on Monday. Identify what's actually wrongAlthough the global sell-off hit U.S. markets hard, "the epicenter of the damage" was Japan, Cramer said. The sell-off started when Japan's stock market posted its worst drop since the stock market crash of 1987 known as Black Monday. The sell-off is sparked by money managers who think the Federal Reserve should have cut rates last week. Investors can also take advantage of the decline in interest rates and buy stocks that yield more than 4%, Cramer said.

The Federal Reserve now has egg on its face after it kept interest rates near a quarter-century high earlier this week. By now, there’s ample evidence that the job market, a key driver of the US economy, has lost steam. Here are three reasons to be worried about July’s shockingly weak jobs report — and one silver lining. Consumer demand itself also hasn’t weakened just yet, despite the highest interest rates in more than two decades. Generally, the Fed makes its decision congruent with what’s going on with inflation or the job market.

The Nikkei 225 sank 4.5% on Friday, extending a global stock rout that started following the release of weak US economic data. The Bank of Japan (BOJ) raised interest rates by 15 basis points to 0.25% on Wednesday, its second hike this year, and announced plans to taper off its policy of bond buying. ”The hike has narrowed the difference in interest rate between the United States and Japan, which pushed the Japanese yen higher against the greenback. Combined with strong corporate earnings and effective corporate governance reforms, the weak yen propelled the Nikkei 225 to all-time highs this year. “From a Japanese equity perspective, the earnings boost from a weak yen is set to diminish,” Citi analysts said on Thursday.
