General Motors’ self-driving car unit Cruise has paused its U.S. operations after California regulators called its vehicles unsafe. WSJ reporter Ryan Felton explains what this decision means for the future of autonomous vehicles and rivals like Google’s self-driving unit Waymo. Photo: Elijah Nouvelage/ReutersGeneral Motors ’ Cruise is suspending an internal program that allows employees to cash out shares in the driverless-car company, citing the need to revalue the business after a pedestrian accident led it to halt robotaxi services last month. Cruise notified employees of the decision Thursday in an email from Chief Executive Kyle Vogt , which was viewed by The Wall Street Journal. The autonomous-driving startup, majority owned by GM, told employees that the regular quarterly offer to sell shares would be canceled as it re-evaluates the program.

Stellantis is expected to offer buyouts to about 6,400 white-collar workers. Photo: REBECCA COOK/REUTERSJeep maker Stellantis is preparing to offer buyouts to roughly half of its U.S. white-collar employees, as the company cuts expenses amid an expensive transition to electric vehicles and potentially higher labor costs. Stellantis Chief Operating Officer Mark Stewart said in an all-hands meeting Monday that the company planned to offer voluntary separation packages to nonunion employees with at least five years of experience, according to people familiar with the matter.

General Motors has invested heavily in Cruise, its self-driving vehicle unit. Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty ImagesCruise, the self-driving vehicle unit of General Motors , has issued a voluntary software recall after California regulators suspended the company’s license to operate in the state following an accident that left a woman severely injured. The recall of 950 vehicles will address a software problem in the car’s response to collisions, Cruise said in a report submitted to federal regulators. Depending on the circumstances of an accident, driverless Cruise cars will either pull over out of traffic following a collision or in some cases remain stationary, it said.

The United Auto Workers union said it reached a tentative deal with Stellantis on Saturday, six weeks after workers went on strike. Earlier in the week, Ford also reached a tentative agreement with the UAW. Photos: Emily Elconin/Bloomberg NewsThe decision by the United Auto Workers on Saturday to call a fresh strike at General Motors as talks appeared to be nearing a conclusion was the latest in a set of unexpected moves by the union, which has used misdirection and maximized publicity to keep companies off balance. The surprise walkout at a factory in Tennessee followed several days of intensifying contract negotiations between GM and union leaders, including meetings involving GM Chief Executive Mary Barra and UAW President Shawn Fain. The escalation of the strike came as the UAW confirmed that it reached a tentative agreement with Chrysler-parent Stellantis on a new labor contract.

Cruise has faced problems in one of its biggest markets, San Francisco, as its cars stalled and were involved in incidents. Photo: Poppy Lynch for The Wall Street JournalThe California Department of Motor Vehicles suspended Cruise’s autonomous-driving permit Tuesday, effectively halting its robot-taxi service in San Francisco. The DMV said that Cruise’s vehicles aren’t safe for public operation and the company has misrepresented information related to the safety of the technology of the vehicles. UAW union members have been striking over job security and pay as automakers push forward in developing EV’s, which require fewer workers and cost more in raw materials. So what does that mean for the future of auto workers and the union? Illustration: George Downs/The Wall Street JournalSix weeks into United Auto Workers’ strike, the impacts of the work stoppages are rippling through the car business, causing pain for the automakers themselves, as well as parts makers and factory workers. One corner of the industry that has been largely spared: dealerships and consumers, due in part to an inventory buildup of both cars and parts before the strikes.

CHICAGO (AP) — Former Northwestern University football coach Pat Fitzgerald is suing the school for $130 million, saying his alma mater wrongfully fired him in the wake of a hazing and abuse scandal that has engulfed the athletic department. Attorney Webb said that Fitzgerald would also be seeking additional money for “infliction of emotional distress,” future lost income and punitive damages. The $130 million includes $68 million remaining in owed salary plus $62 million in future lost income, Webb added. “If there was ever a coach at Northwestern University who should have not been terminated, it’s Coach Fitzgerald," Webb said. Baseball coach Jim Foster was fired July 13 amid allegations of a toxic culture that included bullying and abusive behavior.
