So it is noteworthy that Democratic and Republican leaders both appear to want to establish a sovereign wealth fund to help the United States pay for stuff. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which manages about $925 billion in assets, reported a $36.8 billion profit for 2023, according to Reuters. This isn't the first time Washington has toyed with the idea of a sovereign wealth fund. Last March, a group of bipartisan lawmakers led by Sen. Angus King and Sen. Bill Cassidy began discussing a sovereign wealth fund to pay for Social Security. The White House's interest in a sovereign wealth fund stems partly from its desire to compete with China, which has multiple state-owned funds itself.

I watched hour upon hour of the Republican National Convention, something I’ve done every four years since I was a young political nerd in 1984. Speaker after speaker repeated the claim that America was safer and the world was more secure when Trump was president. If past performance is any indicator of future results, Americans should brace themselves for more chaos if Trump wins. The theme of the second night of the convention was “Make America Safe Again.” Yet the public mustn’t forget that the murder rate skyrocketed under Trump. According to the Pew Research Center, “The year-over-year increase in the U.S. murder rate in 2020 was the largest since at least 1905 — and possibly ever.”

Within hours of Biden dropping out of the race and endorsing his vice president on Sunday, Trump’s campaign managers had released a blistering statement tying Harris to the administration’s policies. Instead, Trump’s team had orchestrated an exacting campaign around defeating Biden. But it was soon widely acknowledged within Trump’s camp that Biden bowing out would also throw their own campaign into uncertainty. Trump’s campaign also began privately ramping up and testing new lines of attack on Harris — someone they had largely ignored since she was sworn in as vice president. While polling has shown Harris is the best known among possible Democratic candidates to replace Biden, Trump’s advisers and allies maintain that most Americans don’t know much about her, creating an opening to define her to the public.

The Republican Party we saw in Milwaukee this past week has been fundamentally changed. With Mr. Vance at his back, leading a new counterestablishment that Mr. Vance helped shape, Mr. Trump has cemented his legacy — and transformed the Republican Party.
