[1/2] Sep 24, 2023; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Taylor Swift reacts while watching the Kansas City Chiefs vs Chicago Bears game during the first half at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. A rumored relationship between Swift and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has sent interest sky-rocketing in Super Bowl champion Kansas City. In another sign of "the Swift Effect," sales of Kelce's jersey surged after Swift's appearance at his Week 3 home game. The broadcast featured ads for the forthcoming concert film "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" and on several occasions cut to Swift, who cheered on the Kansas City team enthusiastically, while commentators made references to her song lyrics. Swift had also appeared at the Chiefs' Week 3 game at home at which the champions pummeled the Chicago Bears 41-10.

More and more governments have been looking at vaccination as a way to contain the highly contagious bird flu. However, trade barriers such vaccination can prompt have made large poultry exporters reluctant to inoculate their birds. The United States triggered restrictions on imports of French poultry beginning Oct. 1, citing a risk of introducing the virus into the country. Despite intensive talks, Japan was also still reluctant to accept French poultry after vaccination, Fesneau said. Bird flu vaccination in France is initially limited to ducks, which are the most vulnerable to the virus and accounted for only 8% of total French poultry production in 2022.

Sept 20 (Reuters) - Consumer goods firms like Nestle (NESN.S), Lindt (LISN.S) and Unilever (ULVR.L) may face increased pressure across Europe to cut prices after being singled out by French retailers and politicians, industry experts say. France is a crucial country for consumer goods companies, having long outstripped Germany, Italy, Spain and others as the European Union's biggest market for groceries by supermarket revenues, according to research firm IBISWorld. That means consumer groups will face pressure to rein back prices across the European Union. Because these supermarkets are in different countries and do not compete with one another, they often combine forces to negotiate with consumer goods makers. Consumer goods makers have for more than two years grappled with sky-rocketing input, supply chain and labour costs that they have either absorbed - taking a hit to margins - or passed on to retailers.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Thursday he had invited the heads of Canada's five largest grocery chains, including Sobeys (EMPa.TO), Metro (MRU.TO) and Loblaw (L.TO), to Ottawa next week to discuss how they planned to control sky-rocketing food prices. Trudeau's move comes when governments across the globe, especially in Europe, have expressed concern over soaring food prices as they seek to address a cost-of-living crisis that has intensified after the pandemic subsided and since the Russia-Ukraine war began. However, after a similar move from the French government in June, analysts were skeptical about Trudeau's warning. They argued it was a "political" tactic and might be ineffective in lowering lingering food inflation. "Both PM Justin Trudeau and François-Philippe Champagne (Canada's industry minister) spoke tough about this topic and it is difficult to envision what teeth they have to hold grocers accountable," said Ben Jang, portfolio manager at Nikola Wealth.

The yuan has plummeted against the dollar this year, as China's economy stagnated. Now, the struggling currency has dropped to a 16-year low versus the dollar. The yuan latest drop came as official data showed Chinese exports declined for the fourth straight month. The latest leg down in the currency came after official data showed China's exports contracted for the fourth month in a row, falling 8.8% in August from a year earlier. Last week China rolled out new measures designed to prop up the struggling currency.

Singapore’s wealth boom hits most sensitive phase

REUTERS/Edgar Su Acquire Licensing RightsSINGAPORE, Sept 6 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Singapore’s wealth boom may be set for a pause. The amount involved has almost doubled and banks, realtors and jewellery dealers have been caught up in the ring. It is the most eye-catching saga since 2015 when Singapore’s banks were involved in the 1MDB Malaysian sovereign fund mess. As Singapore’s success as a financial centre grows, so too does its vulnerability to dirty money. A thornier problem is Singapore’s desire to avoid perceptions it is capitalising on the troubles of China, its top trade partner.

On Sunday, Evergrande reported losses of 33 billion yuan ($4.53 billion) for the first half of the year, versus a 66.4 billion yuan loss in the same period a year earlier. The Chinese property sector’s worsening debt crisis poses a significant challenge for President Xi Jinping and his policy makers, with the country’s economy already reeling from weaker domestic and overseas demand. China’s State Council Information Office, which handles media queries on behalf of the government, declined to comment on the property market and Evergrande’s fate. He sold the first complex the following year for 80 million yuan, according to Evergrande’s website. The committee investigated the matter after banks seized 13.4 billion yuan ($1.84 billion)of deposits held by the property-services unit in 2021.

VinFast’s volatile stock has an easy, painful fix

On Tuesday the Vietnamese nascent electric-car maker’s shares capped a flighty first fortnight as a publicly traded company by tumbling 44%. Yet the unprofitable manufacturer still sports a racy $107 billion market capitalisation courtesy of the previous eightfold rocketing of its stock since its merger with a blank cheque company in mid-August. Even with the wild swings, the stock trades almost five times higher than what already looked like a punchy valuation when the merger was announced in May. Granted, VinFast might not be desperate for cash – parent Vingroup (VIC.HM) and Vuong injected $2.5 billion in April. Absent a rapid rise in car sales, though, VinFast’s zippy valuation is heading for more crashes anyway.

Aug 17 (Reuters) - Argentina's economy ministry said on Thursday it will freeze fuel prices until October 31 after an agreement with the industry as a measure to help tamp down triple-digit inflation. In a statement, the ministry said the government will cut taxes in exchange for the price freezes, but added that the tax benefits can be "taken away" if companies violate the agreement. The agreement followed a meeting between economy minister Sergio Massa and executives from oil companies such as YPF (YPFD.BA) and Vista (VIST.BA) earlier in the afternoon. LONDON, July 13 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Carrefour’s (CARR.PA) 1 billion euros acquisition of smaller rival Cora could be seen as a consequence of the French group’s ability to navigate rocketing inflation. It will give the combined company a near 23% share of the fragmented and competitive French market, consolidating Carrefour’s leadership on its home turf. Five years ago, Carrefour and Casino had begun tentative talks for a possible merger that ultimately collapsed. If anything, Cora’s acquisition will make Carrefour a more attractive target. House prices dropped 2.6% year-on-year in June, after a 1.1% fall in May, Halifax said. On the month, prices fell 0.1% after a 0.2% monthly drop in May.
