Now, a group of 45 GOP lawmakers are demanding changes to House rules. For House rules to be amended, Democrats will likely need to help out, which is no guarantee. Under her leadership, House rules were tweaked to add additional layers of difficulty in filing a "motion to vacate." The group of GOP members who signed on to Thursday's letter throws a proverbial wrench into the ongoing speakership drama. As it currently stands, Republicans possess a very slim majority in House and it takes a simple majority to amend House rules.

A shutdown could risk Social Security payments and SNAP benefits. But with House Republicans in disarray , that seems unlikely to happen before the weekend deadline. But even if the Senate agrees on that measure, House Republicans continue to be at odds. Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy told Punchbowl News on Tuesday that he wouldn't engage in "hypotheticals" when it comes to a clean Senate funding bill. Some Republicans are now saying they'll work across the aisle to keep the government open. It's getting members on both sides of the aisle antsy — and despite conservative pushback, some Republicans are willing to work with Democrats to get the job done. AdvertisementAdvertisement"Extreme House Republicans need to stop playing political games with people's lives," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a briefing Thursday , adding: "A deal is a deal. House Republicans need to do their job, keep the government open, and work with us to deliver — to deliver for the American people." The last time Americans faced a government shutdown was in 2019 under former President Donald Trump, who led a 35-day shutdown — the longest in US history .

Come September 30, some Americans may not see a paycheck or be able to visit parks. For everyday Americans, that could mean losing out on paychecks or childcare spots, and it could even worsen flight delays. The Social Security Administration, for instance, anticipates about 8,500 employees would be furloughed in a shutdown. Travel plans might be further disrupted as Transportation Security Administration workers and air-traffic controllers go without pay, the White House said. The White House has repeatedly said Republicans are bringing Americans this close to another government shutdown.

But the essence of the argument is that lower bond volatility ups the amount of cash liquidity flowing around world markets, and vice versa. But it is the incremental movement in this giant pool that arguably matters most for stock markets and asset prices. Even though global liquidity is shrinking as you might expect in the face of rising Western interest rates, central bank balance sheet reduction and a higher dollar, other offsets are significant. But falling bond volatility has likely played a big part in softening the blow too. "The two together have helped overall liquidity conditions - but we are mindful that bond markets are likely to remain volatile and need to be monitored carefully."

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy said Republicans should not let the government shut down. Conservatives have attached demands to government funding, including a Biden impeachment inquiry. But conservatives are determined to find a solution so they can continue investigating President Joe Biden. But at this point, Republicans and Democrats have yet to agree on a solution that would avoid a government shutdown. "Speaker McCarthy also told us that starting next week, we aren't leaving until we get government funding done.

The delegation, which Mr. Schumer will lead alongside Senator Michael D. Crapo, Republican of Idaho, also plans to make stops in Japan and South Korea, according to spokespeople for both senators’ offices. The planned visit was reported earlier by Punchbowl News. Mr. Schumer has been supportive of the approach, cheering on the restrictions in particular as important steps to reduce China’s ability to threaten U.S. national security. Mr. Schumer has long been a hawk when it comes to China, with a record of blasting Beijing for currency manipulation, unfair trade practices and aggressive actions against Taiwan. He is now pushing to impose sanctions on China for its role in fentanyl trafficking and to rally senators around strategies to outpace China in the realm of artificial intelligence.

CNN —House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced Tuesday he is calling on his committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, even as they have yet to prove allegations he directly profited off his son’s foreign business deals. While McCarthy has already publicly threatened to launch an inquiry, sources say that McCarthy has sent even stronger signals about his intentions behind closed doors. Punchbowl first reported McCarthy’s expected message on an impeachment inquiry. But Tuesday’s news will mark a real effort by McCarthy to start moving ahead and get House Republican skeptics on board with proceeding. House Republican leadership will need to formally whip votes at some point which they have not yet done.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., plans to endorse an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden in an effort to seek bank records and other documents from the president and his son Hunter Biden, two Republican sources familiar with the speaker's intentions told NBC News. McCarthy has signaled for weeks that the House could take up an impeachment inquiry, which would provide additional legal power to the House's investigations into the Biden family. It is unclear whether there are sufficient votes within the GOP conference to open an impeachment inquiry into the president. The White House is ramping up a war room to lead a response to a Republican impeachment inquiry, NBC News previously reported. McCarthy's move to endorse an impeachment inquiry into Biden comes amid pressure from right-wing Republicans, who are pushing back against a short-term funding bill to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month.

The Fed's rate-hiking campaign gave investors an opportunity they haven't seen in years: Risk-free returns are finally interesting. Six-month Treasurys are yielding 5.5%, while a bevy of money market funds are offering 7-day yields exceeding 5%, according to Crane Data . However, at some point, rates will come down — and investors hiding in short-term, high-yielding assets could find themselves with no place to go. That means investors could be left with few places to go for attractive yields in a lower rate environment as their shorter-term assets mature — known as reinvestment risk. The benefit of laddering when rates are high is that the longer-dated bonds will have already locked in the higher yields.

GOP Rep. Derrick Van Orden cursed at and berated a group of teenage Senate pages for lying down in the Capitol Rotunda on Wednesday. Both Senate Minority Leader and the Senate Majority Leader admonished Van Orden for his conduct. You are defiling the space you [pieces of shit]," Van Orden reportedly told the pages late Wednesday evening, according to The Hill. It doesn't appear that Van Orden checked with his colleagues before making such a statement. After hearing about Van Orden's actions toward the Senate pages, Schumer tore into the congressman.

Rep. Derrick Van Orden screamed and cursed at young Senate pages in the Rotunda on Wednesday night. He now says he's being "threatened with bad press" for doing so. Van Orden was notably among the thousands of Trump supporters who descended on DC on January 6. You are defiling the space you [pieces of shit]," Van Orden said, according to The Hill. "Luckily, bad press has never bothered me and if it's the price I pay to stand up for what's right, then so be it," he said.
