Lawmakers in more than a half-dozen U.S. states are pushing laws to define antisemitism, triggering debates about free speech and bringing complicated world politics into statehouses. Bill supporters say that more than 30 states have adopted the definition in some way over the years. Since the Israel-Hamas war erupted, several states have passed resolutions condemning Hamas and voicing support for Israel. Some protesters gathered in the capitol in Indiana this month before the House unanimously advanced a bill incorporating the definition there. How colleges are acting to prevent or stop antisemitism on campus has become a hot-button issue across the country.

New York CNN —Apple has received approval to change the way its smartwatches function so the company can overcome the Apple Watch ban imposed by a US court. Masimo’s attorney said that although the proceeding itself is confidential, he confirmed that the government had no objection to Apple importing the Apple Watch as long as it did not contain that pulse oximeter functionality. Apple had successfully sued to temporarily block a US International Trade Commission ruling that prevents Apple from importing the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, among other newer models, because they violate Masimo’s patents. Apple had said it “strongly disagrees” with the ban and pledged to “take all measures” to bring the Apple Watch back to US customers soon. Apple has routinely marketed its smartwatch as a life-saving device, which has helped launch the Apple Watch into the stratosphere, making it the most popular watch sold around the world.

REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 21 (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday declared that Maryland's licensing requirements for people seeking to buy handguns were unconstitutional, citing a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision last year that expanded gun rights. "Maryland has not shown that this regime is consistent with our nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation," U.S. Richardson called the Maryland law an "additional, preliminary step" that subjected law-abiding people to a 30-day waiting period before they could begin the usual process to acquire a firearm through a separate background check system. A spokesperson for Maryland Attorney General Andrew Brown, a Democrat who is defending the law in court, said his office was "weighing options for next steps in this case." Maryland had said its law mirrored historical limitations on "dangerous" people owning firearms.

CNN —The most anticipated season of “The Crown” has arrived, and no one’s losing much sleep over the Queen this time. One of the many things that captivated viewers when “The Crown” arrived in 2016 was its cinematic scale. The lines between episodes one and three of season six, by contrast, are impossible to draw. As “The Crown” tells it, Al-Fayed’s relentless campaign to see his son Dodi and Diana engaged and thus secure British citizenship is almost as culpable for their deaths as the crash itself. Diana’s final night in Paris is rendered as the fatal culmination of Al-Fayed’s engineering of their relationship, and his pressure on Dodi to propose.

The Swiss National Bank and the Swiss Finance Ministry are part of the conversations with lenders, one source said. A representative for the finance ministry said that the issue of bank runs is part of an overall evaluation of the too-big-to-fail regulatory framework in Switzerland. Regulators worldwide have since been grappling with the risk of bank runs, which in the era of digital banking have accelerated in speed. Financial regulators will need to make sure that banks retain adequate financial buffers as advances in technology increase the risk of bank runs, Bank of England executive director for markets, Andrew Hauser, said on Friday at a conference in London. They risk penalizing Swiss banks if they were to be introduced only in Switzerland, one of the sources said.

But the UAW’s ambitious plans to organize Tesla and other non-union automakers face steep odds. To grow, the UAW will need to gain a foothold at non-union automakers, which produce more than half of the cars assembled in the United States. Historically, UAW talks with the Detroit automakers have been closely watched by non-union automakers and suppliers. Anti-union companiesThe UAW will have to overcome weak protections for labor organizing in the United States and automakers’ aggressive tactics to defeat unions. It may be easier for UAW to organize Volkswagen and other European automakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz than automakers from Asia, experts say.

McCarthy’s Centrist Path Out of a Government Shutdown

But with a funding bill seemingly out of reach, all signs suggest that those entrenched positions will result in a long and painful government shutdown. And it may be enough to arouse a dormant group of centrists whose own interests favor a functional legislative branch. And adding to McCarthy’s bind is the pledge that conservatives will call for his ouster should he work with Democrats to avoid a shutdown. Moderate Republicans, flanked by House Democrats, seize upon the moment. Meanwhile, another possible path, however unlikely, appears open to willing Democrats and centrist Republicans.

Washington CNN —Yelp is suing Texas to ensure it can continue to tell users that crisis pregnancy centers listed on its site do not provide abortions or abortion referrals, opening a new front in the fight between states and the tech industry over abortion restrictions. Yelp said it currently applies the following label to crisis pregnancy center listings: “This is a Crisis Pregnancy Center. Crisis Pregnancy Centers do not offer abortions or referrals to abortion providers.”Yelp’s complaint said its labels are based on a manual evaluation of “thousands of business pages” on its site and reflect truthful statements. But Paxton’s impending lawsuit threatens to silence Yelp and infringe on the company’s First Amendment rights, the complaint alleges. Yelp argues that its labels for crisis pregnancy centers are not deceptive and that Paxton himself had publicly commended the disclosures as “accurate” in a February press release.

Last Saturday, British outlets The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4’s “Dispatches” published a joint investigation in which four women alleged Brand sexually assaulted them in separate instances between 2006 and 2013. One of the women said she was 16 and Brand was 31 at the time of the alleged assault in London. One woman was treated at a rape treatment center the same day as the alleged assault, according to the report. “By now you’re probably aware that the British government have asked big tech platforms to censor our online content and that some online platforms have complied with that request,” he said.
