Patrick T. Fallon | Afp | Getty ImagesThese days the U.S. unemployment system is somewhat of an anomaly. At the pandemic-era nadir, just 52% got a "timely" first payment of unemployment insurance, for example. Unemployment claims spiked as businesses closed amid stay-at-home orders to contain the virus' spread. States get funding based on their administrative workload, like the volume of claims states are paying. That's especially true for one CARES Act program, Pandemic Unemployment Assistance.

This week, The Wall Street Journal’s Mansion section is rolling out stories from our special food and wine issue. Be sure to read stories like this one on a white kitchen getting a natural makeover and this one on high-end homeowners tricking out rooms for their alcohol collections. In Atlanta, Will Letton’s listing has not one, but two spaces that function as pantries. One is technically a scullery (a sort of second kitchen with additional appliances and counter space) and the other is a butler’s pantry. Kitchen storage has always been at a premium, said Mr. Letton, an agent with Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty, but the pandemic increased that need as people began to entertain in their homes.
Federal dollars are also not an option for reimbursement because regulations prohibit federal funds from being used to replace stolen SNAP funds. SNAP participants say they cannot wait that long after a month or more of stolen benefits plunged them into financial turmoil. Washington, D.C., also reimburses SNAP skimming victims. In the meantime, anti-hunger advocates say there’s no reason states can’t fill the gap for SNAP skimming victims. How states can helpCalifornia, one state that restores stolen benefits, has a law allowing state funds to be used that dates back to 2013.
Families are turning to food banks and pantries for support, but many are struggling to meet demand. "Families and food banks are facing a perfect storm," says Stephanie Sullivan of Food Bank for the Heartland. Feeding America's most recent survey found that 60% of US food banks reported an increase in demand. It is one of just six US food banks to have such a facility, which it calls a "huge step" towards fighting food insecurity. After much hesitation, the woman finally paid her local food pantry a visit.
Rising inflation means people are having to give up pets they can't afford, animal shelters say. Animal shelters are facing higher costs and fewer donations — as well as more mouths to feed. Surging prices and widespread housing insecurity are putting pet owners in a tricky situation. The kitten adoption room at the Cat House on the Kings. [1/5] Volunteers fill boxes with donated food at the Ottawa Food Bank warehouse in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada October 27, 2022. Demand has surged 33% at the Ottawa Food Bank from pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels, with visits up as spiraling grocery, gas and rent prices, along with fast-rising borrowing costs, leave more Canadians struggling to make ends meet. "That's because the cost of food has risen ... but also because of the number of people that are turning to a food bank right now," said Wilson. "Our wholesalers are definitely more tentative about spending money," said Farnell. "Everyone's nervous ... Will people be spending money?
Ferguson, a nurse working 16-hour double shifts, knew instantly who she’d find in her hallway that day in February 2019. A domestic violence survivor who previously lived in a shelter, Ferguson had never been accused of child abuse, ACS case records show. But many parents don’t know that they have the right to deny these government agents or don’t push back for fear of losing their children, according to parents and their advocates. It’s a staggering reality — likely millions of warrantless searches a year — and one that has not been reported before. Ferguson believes her constitutional rights were violated that day at her apartment, and is now suing New York City in federal court.
Instead, data and child welfare experts suggest the changes may have done the opposite. State child welfare officials say more vigilance in documenting severe cases of abuse likely contributed to the increase. Child welfare experts say these findings cast doubt on the effectiveness of the primary tool that states rely on to protect children: mandatory child abuse reporting. These policies, the bedrock of America’s child welfare system, were first implemented more than half a century ago in response to growing national awareness of child maltreatment. “We are continuing to tell mandated reporters, ‘Report, report, report,’ and nobody can handle it,” Berger said in an interview.
But this summer, the food stamps couldn't keep up with the grocery store's rising prices, sending her in search of a food donation for the first time. Some advocates argued for spending more on food stamps or cash distribution, which give people more choice than food handouts and also benefit local businesses. He doesn't qualify for food stamps, and has noticed when the pantry runs low on some items. While food supplies shrink, inflation is pushing more Americans toward food pantries for the first time. Food stamps made up less than 2% of U.S. government spending in 2022, according to U.S. Treasury data.
Home organizing became popular earlier in the pandemic, partly thanks to shows like "Get Organized." Two people who recently started organizing businesses share how they've grown in the past year. In her first 12 months in business, Moore and her team of four — which she started hiring three months into her business — helped 80 clients and organized 237 spaces. "There are so many opportunities ahead, and professional organizing is as much a mental-health service as it is a residential service," Klug of Inspired Organizer said. No certifications are required to perform services as a professional organizer, but these professionals said organizing and business training could go a long way.
This is how van life has enabled them to save $108,000 since 2020, as told to PollyAnna Brown. In September 2020, I got a management company to bring me brand deals for user-generated content — content that aligned my channel with sponsored items. By cutting our expenses, growing my business, and doing van life our way, we've saved $108,899.92 in just over two years. Van life also requires more oil changes, and we had to increase our phone plan so that we could hot spot for WiFi. That's how we've approached van life, and we love it.

Gorillas, which competes in Europe, is bringing its 10-minute delivery service to the US. Sümer believes Gorillas can break the habit of stockpiling groceries by offering US consumers on-demand delivery of "emergency" and "replenishment" groceries. He named the company Gorillas because his concept is "bold" and "authentic" just like a strong gorilla. It plans to expand to Italy in May, and also expand its delivery service to more US cities and European countries this summer. In Europe, Gorillas competes with Berlin-based Flink, Turkish delivery service Getir, and 10-minute delivery service Dija.
Taste that rich filling for evidence of the Arab influence that infuses Sicilian cuisine: The candied citrus that often flavors the creamy interior remains beloved throughout the Middle East. In the 1990s, the cake became a menu star as a lava cake or molten chocolate cake.
