But given Trump’s decisive victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, House Republicans are feeling bullish about their chances of preserving their slim majority. The party that will hold the majority in the House of Representatives in January 2025 has yet to be determined. Republican Tim Sheehy defeated Democratic Sen. CNN —Speaker Mike Johnson and the GOP are feeling increasingly bullish about holding onto the House of Representatives, believing they have defied political gravity in key suburban seats as President-elect Donald Trump powered his party toward what may become a full sweep of Washington. But House Republicans and Democrats alike privately believe the GOP will maintain control, according to a half-dozen senior campaign operatives. “We’re going to hold the House,” one senior GOP campaign official said Wednesday. However, House Democrats insist it’s too early for a post-mortem. “We need to pitch a perfect game and that probably won’t happen,” a senior House Democrat campaign official said.

Oregon's universal basic income measure failed, with 78.8% of voters opposing the policy. Basic income programs have been tried across the US as an approach to poverty reduction. AdvertisementOregon's effort to institute a statewide universal basic income failed on November 5. Alaska also has a program that resembles basic income, but it's structured differently than Oregon's proposal. The Alaska Permanent Fund, which began in the 1970s, is a model similar to universal basic income.

Pawtucket, Rhode Island AP —For several decades, the cremated remains of more than two dozen American Civil War veterans languished in storage facilities at a funeral home and cemetery in Seattle. The simple copper and cardboard urns gathering dust on shelves only had the name of each of the 28 soldiers – but nothing linking them to the Civil War. While some remains are hidden away in funeral homes, others were found where they fell in battle or by Civil War re-enactors combing old graveyards. The remains of several more Civil War veterans were sent to Maine, Rhode Island and other places where family connections were found. Bruce Frail and his son Ben – both long active in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War – were on hand for service.

CNN —Ahead of potential civil unrest due to Tuesday’s presidential election, the National Guard is on standby as a precaution in several states, including Washington state and Oregon, where hundreds of ballots were damaged or destroyed after at least three ballot drop boxes were recently set on fire, officials say. Tina Kotek said in a statement Friday the National Guard is standing ready as political leaders call for peaceful protests, according to CNN affiliate KTVZ. In recent years, the National Guard has been activated in several states to assist largely with cyber security threats during elections. The issue has become pressing for law enforcement since the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the US Capitol that delayed certification of the last presidential election. “If you ‘See Something, Say Something’, and let law enforcement investigate and determine the outcome of any suspicious circumstances or incidents.”CNN’s Chris Boyette, Shimon Prokupecz, and Meridith Edwards contributed to this report.
