It’s not unusual for the Federal Emergency Management Agency to have to respond to rumors surrounding any given natural disaster. This week, President Joe Biden requested a memorandum from his team on the federal government’s digital response, including how officials were remediating misinformation, a senior administration official told CNN. “The contours of this misinformation are unlike anything we’ve seen before,” a senior administration official told CNN. CNN previously reported that there were 30 midair near-collisions involving noncommercial flights in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Helene on Saturday, September 28. FEMA personnel on the ground receive threatsThe snowballing of false information on the heels of Hurricane Helene has also directly affected those on the ground.

Leftover debris from Hurricane Helene could make incoming Hurricane Milton even more dangerous. Milton is expected to make landfall in Florida on Wednesday, the second major storm in two weeks. The region has been scrambling to pick up as much debris as possible before it's too late. Since then, I've been to 86 countries and have learned how to travel on a budget. I book directly with local businesses and I embrace public transportation, among other things. Now, 20 years later, I've visited 86 countries on a shoestring budget. It feels more ethical, too, as our money went straight to people living by the river instead of a tour company based elsewhere. If that is the case, make sure to book the tours while you're in the country, as it will save you money.

Now, Uber can offer battery electric vehicles as the sole "green" option in more than 40 cities globally, executives said at Uber's annual Go Get Zero sustainability conference in London on Tuesday. "We need more affordable EVs, we need stronger EV mandates, we need incentives for people who are driving the most. For drivers, Uber said it is rolling out an "EV Mentor" program, which connects drivers for any questions about electric mobility. The deal will give Uber drivers the ability to access Octopus' "Intelligent Go" tariff to help them with EV charging costs.

Price gouging is the practice of retailers artificially inflating prices dramatically when the retailer's costs have not increased. In times of crisis, when urgent demand vastly outpaces supply, consumers can be especially vulnerable to price gouging. Florida is preparing for Hurricane Milton to make landfall on its western coast Wednesday, deepening the wounds left by the devastation of Hurricane Helene, which ravaged the southeastern U.S. about a week earlier. The attorney general's office has received more than 450 consumer contacts alleging price gouging related to Helene, which "mostly concern fuel," a spokesperson told CNBC. Though the price-gouging panic is normal during natural disasters, just the term "price gouging" has political implications, less than a month out from a presidential election that is extremely close.

Perhaps the most important thing to bring with you: a “go bag” full of emergency supplies. Go bags exist to save you from having to run around and gather items when a threatening situation is imminent. The contents of a family’s go bag could mean the difference between life or death, depending on how bad a situation becomes, according to Jonathan Sury, senior staff associate at the National Center for Disaster Preparedness, or NCDP, at Columbia Climate School. Your must-havesMost of the items disaster preparedness experts suggest you include in a go bag are things you can find around your house. Just because someone puts together a “go bag” does not mean that person is prepared, Montano warned.

Pete Buttigieg says he and Elon Musk had a chat about Hurricane Helene relief efforts. That call proved "the best thing to do is just to pick up the phone," Buttigieg said on MSNBC. Buttigieg responded to Musk, writing: "No one is shutting down the airspace and FAA doesn't block legitimate rescue and recovery flights. "And, I think, to me it's an example of how often the best thing to do is just to pick up the phone." CNN —Israel’s military says it has encircled Jabalya, northern Gaza and launched a new ground operation, after seeing signs of Hamas rebuilding, despite nearly a year of fighting and strikes in the territory. The Israeli military issued a fresh evacuation order for residents in northern Gaza, adding it had expanded the scope of the “humanitarian area” in Al-Mawasi. In May, CNN reported that the Israeli military had renewed its fighting in northern Gaza where it had claimed, in January, to have dismantled Hamas’ command structure. During that period, the Israeli military said Hamas was trying to “reassemble” in the area, raising doubts about whether Israel’s goal of eradicating the group in the enclave is realistic. The Israeli offensive that followed in Gaza – which Israel says is aimed at destroying Hamas – has killed more than 41,000 people and triggered a humanitarian crisis.

The storm is quickly strengthening, already boasting winds of 65 mph, according to an update Sunday morning from the National Hurricane Center. It is forecast to intensify into a hurricane by Sunday night — and a major hurricane by late Monday. Hurricane and storm surge watches will likely be issued for parts of the western Florida coast on Sunday — with dangerous storm surge expected for some areas just slammed by Helene. “This is something that potentially would be greater power outages than what we just saw with Hurricane Helene,” the governor said, noting the state’s residents still have a couple of days to get ready. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., chided some of the conspiracy theories that have surfaced surrounding the Hurricane Helene recovery efforts in western North Carolina. Claims about the federal response to Hurricane Helene have been coming from all over social media. When asked about Trump's comments that the federal response to the recovery efforts in North Carolina was terrible and that emergency funding was being used on immigrants, Tillis gave a two-pronged response. He also noted that, as of this moment, immigration is "not yet" impacting "the flow of resources to western North Carolina."

“There isn’t anything that we don’t need right now,” said Tim Love, a volunteer at the center. The destruction of major roads, combined with the natural terrain of the southern Appalachians, have made the rapid distribution of aid an ongoing challenge. The devastation in North Carolina and Tennessee has left two major interstates, Interstate 40 and Interstate 26, largely closed down and inaccessible. According to data from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the entire western border of the state has limited access. Terms of the tentative deal on wages were not immediately available Thursday evening. A tentative deal would still need to be ratified by the rank-and-file ILA members before it would take effect. But with ships stuck at sea unable to come into US ports to unload and load goods, the union has agreed to have workers return to work on Friday. Still, should the members vote against the deal, the strike might start once again. But union members voted nearly unanimously to reject it and have remained on strike since September 13.

However, weather-related events like Hurricane Helene are generally considered to be outside an airline’s control, meaning passengers have relatively few rights to compensation, experts said. Airlines make concessions in some casesSome airlines are making concessions tied to Hurricane Helene, though they vary by carrier and geography. For example, American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines have alerts about flooding in the Southeast. American Airlines is also giving leeway to passengers scheduled to travel through Augusta, Georgia, between Sept. 29 and Oct. 4. Passengers arrive at the Beijing railway station on the first day of peak travel ahead of the National Day holidays in China's capital city on Sept. 29, 2023. China is expecting to see more travelers during Golden Week, but the country's persistent economic woes will likely continue to weigh on overall spending this holiday season. Prices for both domestic and outbound flights during the National Day period declined compared to last year, according to report by Trip.com released last month. During the Golden Week holiday last year, China saw domestic tourism revenue reach 753 billion yuan ($107.37 billion). By comparison, a single-day record of 20.7 million trips were made on May 1, the start of China's Labor Day holiday.

A look back in history shows how a key group of transportation stocks performed the last time there was a major port strike, according to Wolfe Research. Against that backdrop, Scott Group, a senior analyst covering freight transportation at Wolfe, looked at transportation stocks in 2002, the last time there was a major port strike in the U.S. That strike, which lasted just 11 days and affected only West Coast ports, hurt transportation stocks throughout the protest, he said. But those same stocks staged a major comeback in the month after the strike ended. Here are how some key stocks performed during and after the last major strike. Robinson Worldwide was among the biggest laggards during the last port strike.
