The good, bad and ugly about BMI
  + stars: | 2023-05-22 | by ( Sandee Lamotte | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
Short for body mass Index, BMI is nothing more than a crude measurement of a person’s body fat based on height and weight. Yet critics say the term BMI has become a societal judgment by lumping individuals into arbitrary categories that perpetuate misconceptions about body weight. “Yet it has become completely medicalized that health equals weight, weight equals health based on BMI. Conversely, BMI can underestimate body fat in older adults and anyone who has lost muscle, according to the Harvard T.H. More conundrums: Women naturally have more body fat and less muscle mass than men, while some racial and ethnic groups are genetically predisposed to carry more or less lean muscle mass and body fat.
Creating a penis from a vagina is more complicated than turning a penis into a vagina. Then, they must define their priorities for their penis, Horwitz said. Then, during a meta, doctors cut ligaments around the newly enlarged clitoris, allowing it to extend away from the body. Phalloplasty creates a penis from a skin graftScar left over from a skin graft taken for a phalloplasty surgery. Once they've formed the neo-phallus (new penis), doctors surgically connect it to the genitals' nerve and vascular system.
We have also learned over time that not all breast cancer tumors grow or spread at the same rate. For example, a type of breast cancer that I’ve studied, called ductal carcinoma in situ — also known as stage 0 breast cancer — may never progress to invasive disease in a person’s lifetime, and so may require less therapy. Detecting cancer becomes more challenging when trying to distinguish cancer, which also appears white on a mammogram, from dense breast tissue. The task force acknowledged that dense breasts can increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer and that certain race or ethnicity groups are at higher risk for early-onset breast cancer. Black women under 50, for example, die of breast cancer at twice the rate of white women under 50 in the United States.
CNN —President Joe Biden will nominate Dr. Monica Bertagnolli, who currently leads the National Cancer Institute, to be the next director of the National Institutes of Health, the White House announced on Monday. Biden called Bertagnolli “a world-class physician-scientist whose vision and leadership will ensure NIH continues to be an engine of innovation to improve the health of the American people,” in a statement Monday. She would lead the country’s medical research agency, overseeing 27 research institutes and centers focused on different areas of medical research, such as cancer, the human genome, as well as allergy and infectious diseases. The nomination to lead NIH marks a fast ascent within the Biden administration for Bertagnolli. The 20-year-old explained that as a result, she will miss this summer’s tennis events, including the French Open and Wimbledon. She suffered an ankle injury before the Australian Open earlier this year, while tonsillitis forced her to withdraw from the Austin Open in February. Meanwhile, a recurring wrist injury, which hampered Raducanu last season, came back during the Miami Open, where she exited in the first round. Last month, Raducanu lost in the first round of the Stuttgart Open in less than an hour. Raducanu in action during her round of 32 match against Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko at the Stuttgart Open.
Howard Marks told clients that he is taking a leave of absence after a throat cancer diagnosis. Marks, who cofounded Oaktree, said he expects to be "fully back in action around mid-summer." Marks, 77, does not expect "any negative consequences from the treatment, or any lasting limitations on my activities." Billionaire investor and Oaktree Capital Management co-chairman Howard Marks said in a note to Oaktree clients on Wednesday that he is taking a leave of absence while he undergoes treatment after a recent throat cancer diagnosis. "I'm writing to let you know I was recently diagnosed with a relatively common form of throat cancer.
CNN —A new study on breast cancer deaths raises questions around whether Black women should screen at earlier ages. Even though Black women have a 4% lower incidence rate of breast cancer than White women, they have a 40% higher breast cancer death rate. “When the breast cancer mortality rate for Black women in their 40s is 27 deaths per 100,000 person-years, this means 27 out of every 100,000 Black women aged 40-49 in the US die of breast cancer during one year of follow-up. They also wrote that health policy makers should pursue equity, not just equality, when it comes to breast cancer screening as a tool to help reduce breast cancer death rates. Having dense tissue in the breast can make it more difficult for radiologists to identify breast cancer on a mammogram, and women with dense breast tissue have a higher risk of breast cancer.
It's an unfortunate irony — one that means only a few vets have adequate experience treating bulldogs. How I became an expert in treating French bulldogsDr. Kraemer has treated thousands of bulldogs. I even treated some rescued French bulldogs with stem cell therapy, a cutting-edge regenerative medicine. But in my experience, with the improvement of preventive care, wellness, and medicine, the average French bulldog may live 11 to 12 years. In fact, I've treated French bulldogs who competed in local fundraising physical activities, like Cherie the Surf Dog who raises funds for French Bulldog Rescue.

MANAMA, March 4 (Reuters) - Aston Martin's Lance Stroll qualified eighth for Sunday's season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix and then revealed he had broken a big toe as well as both wrists in a cycling accident two weeks ago. I had a broken big toe on the right foot as well. "I came out of surgery 12 days ago, got out of the hospital 10 days ago kind of thing. I'm not as worried now as I was a week ago," added the son of billionaire team owner Lawrence. He said the broken toe was painful "but not anything that's limiting me to drive" and he was taking over-the-counter painkillers.
A teenager's skull bone was placed in her abdomen to preserve it after surgery. Chelsey Smith was 15 when she got in a life-threatening car crash that caused her brain to swell. To save Smith's life, consultant pediatric neurosurgeon Roddy O'Kane removed the bone under Smith's forehead to give her brain space to swell. To keep it healthy, the surgeon implanted part of Smith's skull in her abdomen, just under her skin. While the idea of keeping the skull bone in the abdomen is fairly new, the idea of drilling a hole in the skull to relieve the pressure in the skull is not.
Frederick, the President of Howard University, at a press conference February 29, 2016, in the university's Founder's Library. Frederick is the 17th president of Howard University, one of 107 historically Black colleges and universities in the U.S., serving some 11,000 students across its undergraduate, graduate, and professional student programs. Frederick is the distinguished Charles R. Drew Professor of Surgery at the Howard University College of Medicine. He is also a practicing cancer surgeon at Howard University Hospital, where he continues to see patients and perform surgeries. CNBC: The Department of Defense recently announced its selection of Howard University as the 15th university, and first HBCU, to lead a University Affiliated Research Center.
During limb-lengthening surgery, which can cost anywhere from $75,000 to $90,000, he breaks the leg bones and inserts a metal rod, or nail. The recovery process is long and involvedRecovery from limb-lengthening surgery can be painful and there's a lot of physical therapy involved. "After surgery, patients really have to concentrate on working on their flexibility and regaining strength," Mahboubian said. Surgery may make sex a little difficult for some people during recoveryOne of the most common reasons Mahboubian's patients want limb-lengthening surgery is to improve their love lives. "But I've seen time and time again how the surgery really changes the confidence level in my patients.

Ontario has some private healthcare providers but they are a small part of the health system and provide relatively few public surgeries. Critics worry sharply expanding their footprint will take staff from the pool of public health workers. In 2021, the Commonwealth Fund ranked Canada's health system tenth out of 11 rich countries. Ontario's government said it is following the lead of provinces such as Alberta, which contracts with private providers and said last fall it will fund more surgeries in private clinics. No one disputes Ontario's health system faces serious challenges.
So far, Texas has taken the lead with 36 such bills, according to Equality Texas, a statewide LGBTQ advocacy group. Four states — Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee and Arizona — have enacted restrictions on gender-affirming medical care for minors, though federal judges have blocked them from taking effect in Arkansas and Alabama. State Sen. David Bullard, the Republican sponsoring the bill, told The Oklahoman that gender-affirming medical care is a “permanent change in your body that cannot be reversed. Accredited medical associations — including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association — have supported gender-affirming care for minors. Advocates and doctors who treat trans youth have said many of the health care restrictions proposed by state legislators mischaracterize what gender-affirming care is.
Electric bikes are becoming increasingly popular around the world. This speed is often blamed for the increased dangers that are seen with e-bikes compared with those of traditional bikes. "E-bikes are three times more likely to result in a hospitalization if an injury occurs compared to traditional bikes," DiMaggio said. "Whether that's pedestrians, regular cyclists or electric bikes." "The big difference that you see here in the Netherlands compared to most other places, with very few exceptions, is that everybody cycles here.
China's health authority did not immediately respond to a request for comment on infections among medical staff. A few nurses at the fever clinic were tested positive, there aren’t any special protective measures for hospital staff and I believe many of us will soon get infected," Li added. A post on the Weibo social media platform recounted a recent experience at the emergency ward at Beijing Hospital. "Those who have not been to the emergency department of Beijing Hospital don't know what a mess it has become," wrote a Weibo user called Moshang. Beijing Hospital did not immediately respond to a Reuters' request for comment.
“We will now turn on the generator — unfortunately, it will take a few minutes.”Attacks have hit hospitals and outpatient clinics in southeastern Ukraine, too. In the recently retaken southern city of Kherson, without power after the Russian retreat, paralyzed elevators are a real challenge for paramedics. Medical workers carried the teenager through the dark stairwells of a children’s hospital to an operating room on the sixth floor. The generator the children’s hospital uses broke down last week, leaving the facility without any form of power for several hours. Doctors are wrapping newborns in blankets because there’s no heat, said Dr. Olga Pilyarska, deputy head of intensive care.
The path to raising successful kids can seem nebulous. Here are three things parents of highly successful kids have in common. She interviewed 70 parents of highly successful kids to find out if there are any common parenting practices. One thing she noticed was parents of successful kids showed a genuine interest in their kids' hobbies. "The parents never veered their kids away from the hobby because they knew it was keeping them mentally active."
Of particular importance is information about how many seniors die, develop disabilities, can no longer live independently, or have a significantly worsened quality of life after major surgery. “What older patients want to know is, ‘What’s my life going to look like?’” Cooper said. Invasive procedures that take place in operating rooms with patients under general anesthesia were counted as major surgeries. Two years ago, Gill’s team conducted research that showed 1 in 3 older adults had not returned to their baseline level of functioning six months after major surgery. This includes assessing older patients three times a day for delirium (an acute change in mental status that often afflicts older hospital patients), getting patients moving as soon as possible, and using non-narcotic pain relievers.
Major chain Tenet Health said last week that labor costs ate away at its third-quarter finances. Last week, Tenet reported lower revenue and earnings in the third quarter compared with 2021, missing Wall Street's expectations as the company suffered from higher temporary labor costs. Investors had expected Tenet to report an improvement in contract labor costs, Ben Hendrix, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets, said in a Friday note. Contract labor increased to 11% of total hospital labor expenses, compared with just 2% in 2019, according to the report. "We still are running with a lot more nurses in contract labor than we did in 2019," he said.
Studies show that having structure and familiar rituals teaches kids how to constructively manage themselves and their environment. As a physician who studies early brain development, I've found one surprising factor that contributes to increased resilience at a young age: creating "nurturing routines." When children do things in a similar way and at a similar time, over and over, they know what to expect. And as they begin to do parts of their routine with less supervision, they will grow more independent and confident. Explaining the why behind a routine helps kids learn what's expected of them and feel the positive impact of completing the routine.
"He's off the ventilator, so the road to recovery has begun," his agent, Andrew Wylie, wrote in an email to Reuters. Rushdie was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania, for treatment after the attack. Authorities in Iran have made no public comment about the attack, although hardline state media outlets have celebrated it with headlines including "Satan has been blinded" and some Iranians voiced support online for the stabbing. Rushdie was stabbed 10 times, prosecutors said during Matar's arraignment, according to the New York Times. A Hezbollah official told Reuters on Saturday that the group had no additional information on the attack on Rushdie.
Wylie did not respond to messages requesting updates on Rushdie's condition on Saturday, though the New York Times reported that Rushdie had started to talk, citing Wylie. In a statement on Saturday, President Joe Biden commended the "universal ideals" that Rushdie and his work embody. Rushdie was stabbed 10 times, prosecutors said during Matar's arraignment, according to the Times. There has been no official government reaction in Iran to the attack on Rushdie, but several hardline Iranian newspapers praised his assailant. A Hezbollah official told Reuters on Saturday that the group had no additional information on the attack on Rushdie.
