Warren Buffett is worried about a rise in impersonators looking to capitalize on his name by purporting to be him recommending an investment product or political candidate on social media. So much so that Berkshire Hathaway made the rare move of adding a statement on the matter to the front page of its website. The statement reads:“In light of the increased usage of social media, there have been numerous fraudulent claims regarding Mr. Buffett’s endorsement of investment products as well as his endorsement and support of political candidates. But Buffett wants to make sure everyone knows he would never do something like that. His actions were triggered in part by a fake political endorsement on Meta’s Instagram that was brought to his attention.

CNN —Moldova’s crucial referendum on joining the European Union is too close to call, partial results showed Monday, as President Maia Sandu condemned an “unprecedented assault” on the country’s democracy. With just over 1.4% of ballots still to be counted, 50.2% had voted “yes” in the referendum, according to the country’s Central Election Commission. The tight margin would come as a blow to Sandu, who had been hoping for a clear endorsement of the pro-EU path she has charted during her first presidential term. Vadim Ghirda/APCNN reported last week on the efforts of a Kremlin-linked network, spearheaded by the exiled Moldovan oligarch Ilan Shor, to buy votes in Moldova, aiming to sway the results of the EU referendum. If other pro-Russian parties and voters throw their support behind Stoianoglo, the November 3 run-off could be extremely tight.

New York CNN —An umbrella organization of civil rights groups is alerting the public to “digital voting disinformation” and imploring social media companies to take action. Wiley’s coalition, representing more than 200 civil rights interest groups and other organizations, wants companies like Elon Musk’s X and Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta to more clearly separate fact from fiction. “Social media companies should be vigilant,” Wiley said, observing that information platforms don’t have to be overwhelmingly polluted. The Leadership Conference’s Center for Civil Rights and Technology decided to speak out after social networks were swamped with lies about Hurricanes Helene and Milton earlier this fall. The conduct of social media firms is of interest to civil rights groups; candidates and campaigns; government agencies; and election technology suppliers, just to name a few.
