The Israeli military said it had struck Hezbollah infrastructure and a weapons storage facility in southern Lebanon in overnight airstrikes. Israeli artillery also struck several areas in southern Lebanon, the IDF said in a statement. In northern Israel, at least eight people were injured by anti-tank fire from across the Lebanon border, health authorities said early Thursday. While Israel has not taken responsibility for the attacks, the militant group and Lebanese officials also pinned the blame on Israel. Whether original Gold Apollo products were tampered with, or entirely fake ones manufactured, was still being investigated, a spokesperson for the Taiwanese Economic Affairs Ministry told NBC News.

DETROIT – A year after unprecedented strikes by the United Auto Workers against the Detroit automakers, the union is once again threatening work stoppages that could disrupt the U.S. automotive industry. Both announcements amount to warning shots against Ford and Stellantis and center on local union contracts. Local contracts have historically taken months, if not years, to settle after a national agreement is reached. Last year's auto worker strikes came during historic negotiations over national contracts with all three Detroit automakers at once. The UAW did not immediately respond for comment Thursday regarding updates on the announcements or how many local contracts remain under negotiation.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has unveiled his latest buzzword to describe monetary policy, with a "recalibration" of policy at a pivotal moment for the central bank. "This recalibration of our policy stance will help maintain the strength of the economy and the labor market, and will continue to enable further progress on inflation as we begin the process of moving forward a more neutral stance," Powell said. Financial markets weren't quite sure what to make of the chair's messaging in the meeting's immediate aftermath. However, asset prices soared Thursday as investors took Powell at his word that the unusually outsized move wasn't in response to a substantial slowing of the economy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 jumped to new highs in trading Thursday after swinging violently Wednesday.

The new findings add to strong, but circumstantial evidence that the SARS-CoV2 virus jumped from infected animals to humans and that the market was a central site of early spread. Of the animals present at the market, rabbits, dogs and raccoon dogs are known to be susceptible to Covid-19 infections. Their analysis shows that SARS-CoV2 virus present at the market emerged at the same time as the virus from the larger pandemic, suggesting they are one and the same. The pandemic virus would have an earlier birthdate. “A lab origin is a possibility.

The Hidden Environmental Costs of Food Damage to the natural world isn’t factored into the price of food. The proponents of true cost accounting don’t propose raising food prices across the board, but they say that increased awareness of the hidden environmental cost of food could change behavior. (True cost accounting also typically includes things like labor rights and dietary health, but here we’re focusing on environmental costs.) Large disparities between the retail price of food and its environmental costs are found in the proteins many of us eat every day.

Commuters cycles past the Bank of England (BOE), left, in the City of London, UK, on Monday, Sept. 16, 2024. The central bank's Monetary Policy Committee's interest rate decision is scheduled for release on Sept. 19. LONDON — The Bank of England on Thursday said it would hold interest rates steady following its initial cut in August, even after the U.S. Federal Reserve opted for a jumbo rate cut the day before. The Monetary Policy Committee voted by 8 to 1 to hold, with the dissenting member voting for a 0.25 percentage point cut. Many strategists had expected a smaller 25 basis point cut at the September meeting, despite market pricing through this week pointing to more than 50% probability of the more aggressive option.

CNN —Ukraine’s electricity supply risks “severe disruptions” this winter, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned, urging Kyiv’s allies to help address the country’s energy security. Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with missiles and drones since its full-scale invasion in February 2022, but its bombardments have intensified recently, leaving the country in a precarious position as colder weather approaches. Ukraine has also attacked Russia’s energy infrastructure. In its report, the agency outlines 10 measures that Ukraine and its allies should implement to tackle risks to the country’s energy supply. She also noted that the EU had contributed at least €2 billion ($2.2 billion) toward Ukraine’s energy system since Russia’s full-scale invasion began.

The HOMES Act would establish a new federal housing development authority charged with building and rehabilitating more than a million permanently affordable homes. This so-called "social housing" is notably different from traditional public housing, which is entirely reserved for the poorest households. Rent for all tenants in social housing would be capped at 25% of their income. "There is another way: social housing," Ocasio-Cortez and Smith said in their op-ed. And in California, lawmakers introduced a bill to construct mixed-income social housing on government-owned land.
