Ashok Kumar | Getty Images Entertainment | Getty ImagesWhat is recession pop? Recession pop largely refers to the body of music that emerged during the Great Recession, which started in late 2007 and lasted for 18 months. It's a lot of Katy Perry, and a lot of hyper, very fast music," said Lewis. Why is recession pop having a renaissance? That tension has given way to recession pop."

Rome Reuters —The remains of what appears to be a medieval palace where popes lived before they made the Vatican their home have been excavated in Rome prior to renovations for the 2025 Catholic Holy Year, or Jubilee, the Italian Culture Ministry said on Wednesday. The walls of the complex may have protected the Patriarchio, a monumental basilica envisaged by Emperor Constantine in the square outside the Archbasilica of St John Lateran. Italian Ministry of Culture/Reuters“This is an extraordinarily important find for the city of Rome and its medieval history, as no extensive archaeological excavations have ever been carried out in the square in modern times,” the ministry said. The area around St John Lateran is being spruced up ahead of the Jubilee, a year-long event starting in December that is expected to attract more than 30 million pilgrims and tourists to the Italian capital. During a Jubilee, Catholics can obtain special indulgences, or remission of their sins, if they fulfill certain conditions and do good works or make pilgrimages.

Many hotels provide complimentary pajamas, slippers, and toiletriesAt some hotels in Japan I had access to as many toiletries as I needed. Anna HainesIn Japan, I'd usually also find a set of pajamas and slippers in the closet for guests to use. Even in big cities like Tokyo, garbage bins are almost completely absent from public spaces. Public spaces are incredibly quiet, creating a calm atmosphereEven shopping malls in Japan felt pretty quiet. As a result, public spaces in Japan maintain an air of tranquility that feels like a novelty compared to many public spaces in the United States.

CNN —Writings on an ancient clay tablet have allowed experts to reconstruct a Bronze Age ship made of reeds and sail it on a maiden voyage off the coast of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is the world’s largest reconstruction of a Bronze Age Magan boat, according to the team. The research project’s goals were to uncover ancient craftsmanship techniques, determine the connections between Bronze Age societies and better understand the role Abu Dhabi once played in Bronze Age trade. After passing five days of trials, the ship sailed toward Saadiyat Island off the coast of Abu Dhabi and the open sea on March 2 and 3. “Seeing the Magan Boat sail on the water for the first time actually took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes.”

Researchers in South Korea say they’ve developed a new way to make lab-grown meat taste like the real deal. It may look like a transparent, bubble gum pink-colored disc, but scientists hope it could revolutionize the meat on people’s plates. Because the cultured meat is not yet edible, the researchers used an electronic nose, to test the aromas of the cultured meat, and see how they compare to conventional meat. Ron DeSantis banned the sale of lab-grown meat in the state in what he said was an effort to protect farmers and ranchers. In May, Huber’s Butchery in Singapore became the first retail store to sell cultured meat, a shredded chicken by Good Meat made with just 3% cultivated meat.

In these days of uncertainty at the White House, Vice President Kamala Harris is sticking close to President Biden physically and politically, determined not to let anyone say that she has been anything other than completely loyal. With Mr. Biden’s future on the line, perhaps no one is in a more delicate position than Ms. Harris. As a practical matter, though, she has to ignore the chatter and disclaim any interest unless Mr. Biden reverses course and passes her the baton. Read previewIf you opened Instagram last July 5, the buzz about Threads was hard to miss. Threads plans to become more independent, but Instagram still drives a lot of the trafficRecent data from Emarketer found that Instagram has been a big driver of users to Threads — out of Threads' 29 million US users in 2023, 21% were Instagram users, while in 2024, that share rose to 29% out of 41.7 million users. Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri confirmed in a recent interview with Platformer that a lot of the platform's users were "coming over from Instagram." However, Instagram still reminds Threads users who dropped off to keep using the platform, like Kristin Bousquet, a creator who has 5,412 followers on Threads. "Just having the ability to go to someone's Instagram account from Threads, and vice versa, keeps it top of mind," he said.

The items repatriated from New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art arrived Wednesday and were displayed to journalists and VIPs on Thursday at the National Museum in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. Fourteen rare Angkor era sculptures tied to a controversial art dealer and collector were returned to Cambodia from New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art earlier this week. Cambodia claims that other items illegally trafficked from the country are still at the Metropolitan Museum, as well as at other museums and in the hands of private collectors. Heng Sinith/APThe pieces returned to Cambodia from the Met were looted during a long period of civil war and instability in Cambodia, which was ruled by the brutal communist Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s. “At last, the Uma can be reunified to achieve its full magnificence as one complete statue,” it said.

My parents took me on college visits, where we attended presentations that I listened to halfheartedly. But I couldn't quite give up my dream of moving further away and having an adventure. Not all the colleges in the book were American; some were overseas, and those were cheaper, a lot cheaper. I'd be leaving all the friends I'd made in the last few years and starting completely from scratch. Some friends thought it was cool that I was moving to Canada, but others found it odd.

Popular brands like Poppi and Olipop say their sodas contain prebiotics designed to help good bacteria grow. Culture Pop, on the other hand, is a probiotic drink that says it contains the live bacteria other brands help to cultivate.

Tyrian purple was a highly prized pigment developed in the Bronze Age, and it retained its status into the late medieval period. Several pottery fragments had residue of Tyrian purple pigment, the research team revealed. The well-preserved pigment could be used to dye textiles today, lead study author Dr. Lydia Berger said. Once collected, the snails had to be kept alive until the purple dye makers were ready to crush them and extract the mollusk’s mucus glands. The process came with a fishy odor, one that the researchers recognized when they came across the purple pigment residue in the recent excavation at Kolonna, she added.

The multiplier effect of culture in New York is huge both in economic and human terms. But arts funding does not consistently rise to meet it. From one vantage, the city’s cultural funding can look robust. Over the past decade, the money allocated to the Department of Cultural Affairs has increased considerably, as City Hall officials will point out. And at any rate, between 2023 and 2024, the overall budget decreased by $7 million to $241 million, as the migrant crisis required cuts across municipal divisions.

Here are seven things I wish people knew before they visited Hawaii so they can be educated, more responsible tourists. In fact, according to census data obtained in September 2023, more Native Hawaiians live on the mainland than in the Hawaiian Islands. Hawaii used to be its own kingdom until the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrownBefore becoming the 50th state, Hawaii was a thriving sovereign nation. In Hawaii, 'aloha' has a much deeper meaning than 'hello'You may know that "aloha" is used as a greeting to mean "hello" or "goodbye." So, if you do plan on visiting Hawaii, it's important to also have aloha for the land and its people.

There is a certain irony in the bravado about the Ten Commandments from Gov. On Saturday he told attendees at a Republican fund-raiser, “I can’t wait to be sued.” Clearly, he knows that the Supreme Court previously ruled against mandatory displays of the Ten Commandments in the classroom. In a 1980 case, Stone v. Graham, the Supreme Court struck down a Kentucky law that required the posting of the Ten Commandments, purchased through private donations, in every classroom in the state. A Louisiana law requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in every public classroom in the state defies this precedent, so, yes, the state will be sued. So we’re seeing a flurry of culture-war-motivated state laws, many of them aimed at the First Amendment, that confront precedent.
