Across the state, Native American children are overrepresented in the foster care system, while there is a shortage of Native American foster parents. “If it’s a mom that can’t provide diapers or if there’s a young person that has a need for shoes, then we want to try to help support that need,” Manuel said. All three undecided voters assembled for a similar exercise in the Philadelphia suburbs remained on the fence, with Harris getting a look from two and former President Donald Trump from one. Following Donald Trump’s lead, Johnson has tied a six-month funding bill to the SAVE Act, which would overhaul voting laws to require people to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Democrats and some Republicans are pushing for a “clean” funding bill that would keep the government open until December, after the election. The government will shut down at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 1 unless Republicans and Democrats strike a deal to extend funding. Because of their miniscule majority, House Republicans can only afford four GOP defections if all lawmakers vote. “I’m a firm NO on bankrupting the nation and a YES on election integrity,” Mills said.

CNN —Jupiter’s moon Ganymede may have shifted on its axis when a massive asteroid smashed into it about 4 billion years ago, according to a new study. Ganymede, the largest moon in the solar system, is even bigger than Mercury and the dwarf planet Pluto. The crater left behind on Ganymede was 25% the size of the Jupiter moon, according to the study. Understanding how the impact altered the moon could reveal insights into its intriguing internal structure, Hirata said. “I want to understand the origin and evolution of Ganymede and other Jupiter moons,” he said.

In contrast, at the RNC convention, President Biden was mentioned only twice in four days.”Facts First: Kennedy’s claim about Biden mentions at the Republican National Convention is not even close to true. The Republican vice presidential nominee, Sen. JD Vance, said the word “Biden” 12 times in his own convention speech. Trump himself said “Biden” twice in his convention speech (during a single reference), but Kennedy’s claim was about the Republicans’ four-day gathering as a whole. The false claim that Biden was mentioned a total of twice over the four days of the Republican convention has been circulating on social media this week. CNN has not conducted or seen a thorough independent analysis of the words used at the Democratic National Convention, which concluded yesterday.

Though Republicans have branded themselves as the party of capital-P patriotism since the Nixon years, Democrats sought to reclaim American pride this week. A striking number of this year's speakers focused on military might and distinctly American values, from Harris herself to Iraq war veterans. The group most directly affected by restrictions on abortion — women of reproductive age — are broadly against them, new survey results have found. Nearly half of Republican women of reproductive age said abortion should be legal in most or all cases. The report released Wednesday focuses more narrowly on how women of reproductive age view abortion, based on 3,900 responses. KFF’s survey results in Florida suggest that 72% of reproductive-age women there think abortion should be legal, including roughly half of Republican women. Frederiksen said her research shows that many women are unaware of or misinformed about their states’ abortion landscapes.

The Arizona for Abortion Access Act will go before voters under the title "Proposition 139." “This is a huge win for Arizona voters who will now get to vote YES on restoring and protecting the right to access abortion care, free from political interference, once and for all,” Cheryl Bruce, campaign manager for Arizona for Abortion Access, said in a statement. Amplify, a coalition of progressive groups, released its first digital ad supporting Vice President Kamala Harris’s bid for the White House, part of a $25 million voter outreach campaign targeting Democrats and disaffected independents in battleground states. The ad reflects a unified message from the left that the organizations began testing in the 2022 midterms, and which they say helped blunt what had been expected to be a sweeping victory for Republicans. The members of the coalition said they plan to spend $1 million on the ad’s release. The theme has been widely used by Democrats since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade that year. Ms. Harris, who has long made discussion of abortion rights a major part of her stump speeches, has also fashioned the freedom theme into a core part of her campaign’s message.

Biden's 2020 victories in Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada — as well as his wins in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — effectively cut off Trump's path to victory that year. Should Harris neutralize the border security issue — a feat that seemed unimaginable when Biden was still the presumptive nominee — it'll give her a major opening to win Arizona.

Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump participates in a question-and-answer session at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago, July 31, 2024. An Arizona grand jury that indicted 18 allies of former President Donald Trump on criminal charges related to trying to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state was interested in indicting Trump as well, but was asked not to do so by the state attorney general's office, according to a new court filing. Attorney General Kristin Mayes' office disclosed the grand jury's interest in charging Trump in a filing that disputed a claim by many of the defendants that the office was politically biased in prosecuting them in the so-called fake electors case. "The State Grand Jury was told by the Attorney General's Office on multiple occasions that it had the discretion to indict no one," the office wrote. He also was charged last year in state court in Atlanta with trying to overturn Biden's victory that year in Georgia.

A few days ago, Donald J. Trump said vice-presidential nominees have “virtually no impact” electorally. By selecting Minnesota’s governor, Tim Walz, as her running mate on Tuesday, Kamala Harris put Mr. Trump one step closer to being proved right. A few days ago, it wasn’t so obvious Mr. Trump’s claim was on safe footing. While it’s true that most vice-presidential nominees don’t have a major impact, they often help the ticket in the vice-presidential nominee’s home state. Instead, she selected someone from Minnesota, which is not a top-tier battleground.

When Vice President Kamala Harris gathered some of her closest advisers in the dining room of the Naval Observatory on Saturday, they had more choices than time. The advisers were there to present their findings on a list that still technically ran six deep to Ms. Harris, who had less than 72 hours to sift through it to make her final decision. One by one, the circle of her most trusted confidants ran through the pros and cons of each possible No. Tim Walz of Minnesota, Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona and Gov. And the upshot, Ms. Harris was told, was this: She could win the White House with any of the three finalists by her side.
