The National Hurricane Center says Beryl is expected to be an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 hurricane when it reaches the Windward Islands by late Sunday or early Monday. A tropical storm warning has been issued for Martinique, and a tropical storm watch is in effect for Dominica. The first hurricane of the season is unusually earlyBeryl’s rapid intensification is very unusual this early into hurricane season, according to Brennan. If Beryl reaches Category 4 intensity before Thursday, July 4, it would be the earliest recorded Category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic. Cars line up at a gas station Saturday in Bridgetown, Barbados, as hurricane Beryl approaches.

A major vacancy in the fashion world has been filled. On Thursday, Lanvin, the oldest French couture house in continual existence, named Peter Copping its new artistic director, an appointment that indicates a potential return to pure designers after a period in which the buzz was focused on content creators. He has spent the last five years working behind the scenes as head of couture at Balenciaga, where he was instrumental in orchestrating the much celebrated return of couture to that house. (The announcement of his appointment at Lanvin came the day after Balenciaga’s latest couture show, attended by Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts, among others.) Previously, he had been the handpicked heir to Oscar de la Renta before Mr. de la Renta’s death roiled his succession plans, and the head designer at Nina Ricci.

It’s the shuddersome, floppy Greenland shark, which can live to 300, perhaps even longer, its life span slowed and distended by the deep cold of the northern oceans. Since then, measured by weight, 90 percent of the largest creatures sharing the oceans with them have disappeared. This is not just a parable about the warming of the seas. Ninety percent of global marine fish stocks have now been fully exploited or overfished; 81 percent of monitored migratory freshwater populations have declined since 1970. But the story of that warming is nevertheless astonishing, even for those of us anesthetized by exposure to the world’s rapid ecological transformation.

"It was harder than the initial assault," Kostial said of being stalked. The Aetna NDA only silenced her about the terms of her settlement, not the sexual assault. Kostial has discussed her situation with Vincent White, a New York city-based lawyer who specializes in workplace NDAs and advises signatories on the risks associated with breaking them. Dutch Fashion Designer Iris van Herpen Moves Into Art

The Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen, who counts Beyoncé, Björk and Tilda Swinton among her regular clients, is known for dazzling haute couture pieces that resemble sculpture. Now she’s aiming to show that the equation also works the other way around: She’s not a fashion designer but an artist who happens to make pieces for the body. Van Herpen is planning an art exhibition, called “Hybrid,” that took a year to plan but will run for just 45 minutes on June 24, as part of Paris Haute Couture Week. Why just 45 minutes? Compared to her usual presentation at Fashion Week, the designer said, it’s actually a long time.

That's because the sulfur dioxide, a pollutant which forms when sulfur-containing fuel such as coal or petroleum oil is burned, reacts with water vapor to produce aerosols that reflect sunlight back into space. The aerosols have a direct cooling effect, though climate scientists note that their contribution to global cooling or warming when they are reduced remains a complex area of research. Extreme temperatures are fueled by the climate crisis, the chief driver of which is the burning of fossil fuels. All of the climate models will give you slightly different answers because of the way that they do their emissions of sulfur dioxide," Haywood said. "So, we are uncertain about how much impact the IMO regulations will have had on global mean temperatures."

Kandinsky Cut Ties With Russia. So Did This Museum.

When the Hermitage Amsterdam cut ties with the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg in 2022, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it could have seemed like the Dutch museum was turning away from Russian culture, or even Russian artists. After all, the Dutch museum had spent 15 years showcasing masterpieces from the Russian institution, with exhibitions devoted to the Hermitage’s founder, Catherine the Great, and the House of Romanov, as well as the blockbuster “Jewels! The Glitter of the Russian Court.”But Annabelle Birnie, who runs the Amsterdam museum, doesn’t want anyone to be confused about the reasons for the split from its former exhibition partner. “Russian art was never part of the decision,” she said. “It was an economic boycott,” that “had nothing to do with the quality of Russian art and Russian artists,” she added.

El Niño Is Over. What Does That Mean for Summer?
  + stars: | 2024-06-14 | by ( Austyn Gaffney | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
El Niño, the natural climate pattern linked to warmer conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean, has ended, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced on Thursday. The counterpart pattern known as La Niña, defined by cooler equatorial sea surface temperatures, is expected to develop soon. A strong El Niño has cycled through the atmosphere since last June, leading to a wetter than normal winter, especially in the Southeast and in California, where a mind-boggling 51 atmospheric rivers dumped rain and snow. That’s because, while El Niño conditions can rip apart storms that develop in the Atlantic Basin, hurricanes and tropical cyclones are more likely to form under La Niña. Calm conditions produced by La Niña combined with warm ocean temperatures will intensify the activity likely to occur during hurricane season.

CNN —El Niño has officially come to an end and the ripples from its demise will shake up weather around the globe. With El Niño out of the spotlight, its opposite is preparing to take center stage later this summer: La Niña. For now, neither La Niña nor El Niño are present and a so-called neutral phase has begun, according to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center. Here’s what a summer without El Niño and a budding La Niña could have in store. CNN —A man has died after falling from a 1,981 foot (604-meter-high) cliff in Norway that featured in a “Mission Impossible” film. Preikestolen, known in English as “Pulpit Rock” is a cliff in southwestern Norway overlooking the Lysefjord. Nina Thommesen, police attorney for the Sør-Vest politidistrikt, confirmed that a man in his 40s had died on Monday. Although it is “the most iconic natural landmark in Norway,” according to the non-profit which manages the site, Preikestolen grew in fame when it was featured in the sixth “Mission Impossible” film, starring Tom Cruise. Many of the tens of thousands of migrants who have arrived in New York City over the last several years say they share the same hope: to be granted asylum so they can legally stay in the United States permanently. But while New York is a beacon for many migrants, with a law guaranteeing shelter and pro-immigration political traditions, its asylum office is also the toughest place to win a claim in the country, records show. Even before the recent influx of border crossers, New York’s federal asylum office granted the lowest share of asylum claims among the nearly dozen such offices around the country, according to a 2022 analysis by the nonprofit Human Rights First. In 2020, when 28 percent of asylum claims were granted nationally, 5 percent of decisions in New York were approvals. The asylum process was never meant to be a catchall program to allow most people arriving in the United States to remain.

Whales Have an Alphabet

Ever since the discovery of whale songs almost 60 years ago, scientists have been trying to decipher the lyrics. But sperm whales don’t produce the eerie melodies sung by humpback whales, sounds that became a sensation in the 1960s. Instead, sperm whales rattle off clicks that sound like a cross between Morse code and a creaking door. Carl Zimmer, a science reporter, explains why it’s possible that the whales are communicating in a complex language.

How to Stay Safe in Extreme Heat
  + stars: | 2024-05-24 | by ( Nina Agrawal | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Rates of emergency room visits for conditions related to heat rose substantially in many parts of the United States last summer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We asked emergency room doctors around the country what the public should know about extreme heat. Heat-related illnesses range from minor rashes to life-threatening heat strokes. Mild heat illnesses include heat rash; swelling in the hands and feet; muscle cramps; and heat syncope, or a fainting episode after standing too long or getting up suddenly. People with heat exhaustion have more severe symptoms, which could include headache, nausea, vomiting and dizziness.
