Central bank policymakers have kept their target interest rate at 5.25% to 5.5% for the past year, creating a yield bonanza for investors in money market funds, certificates of deposit and Treasury bills. Gundlach, speaking on CNBC's " Closing Bell " on Wednesday, said he sees the Fed enacting as much as 150 basis points worth of rate cuts in the next year, or 1.5 percentage points, which would lower the fed funds rate to 3.75% to 4.00%. As interest rates come down, cash, short-dated instruments and floating-rate debt will also see lower yields, translating to less income for investors, he added. In lieu of those bank loans, investors may want to consider migrating toward BB-rated, fixed-rate high yield bonds — high-yield issues, he said. The central bank is keeping a close eye on the labor market and staying vigilant for signs of a potentially sharp downturn, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said. "We're watching really carefully for that," he said during Wednesday's press conference. "We're aware of that role, which …. I would call it a statistical thing that has happened through history." At this point, low unemployment and a low level of layoffs suggest a "normalizing labor market," the Fed chair noted.

Investors who are camped out in cash are nabbing sweet yields, but the clock is ticking on that attractive income. Money market fund assets totaled $6.14 trillion as of the week ended July 24, according to the Investment Company Institute . The largest money market funds are offering an annualized 7-day current yield of 5.12%, per the Crane 100 Money Fund Index. "Investors must also remember that the liquid securities held in money market funds have maturities capped at slightly over a year," he said. While these short-term bonds may be an attractive alternative to hiding out in cash, investors should avoid making them the lion's share of their fixed income holdings.

Investors can generate portfolio income and benefit from price appreciation in their stock holdings with an options strategy — provided they do it right. In addition, if the strike price is sufficiently higher than the current price, the initial investor can benefit from the appreciation in the meantime. For instance, if the underlying stock falls short of the strike price, the premium can provide some cushion on the downside. Today's high interest rate environment has led to rising borrowing costs for consumers, but there is a silver lining for savers: Their idle cash can generate plenty of income – if they can find the right savings products. The Federal Reserve's key interest rate is sitting at a target range of 5.25% to 5.5%, its highest level in more than 22 years . The firm found that about six out of 10 middle-income Americans are leaving their money in lower-yielding accounts, even as interest rates have risen. "Or, there's a perception that the switching costs, or the friction, related to making a change is more work than the benefit of getting higher rates." But that surge is spurring some financial advisors to reassess their clients' exposure to large-cap tech and turn toward currently unloved asset categories that could be poised to rise.
