Democrats ended up cleaning up in the Clinton districts and then padding their majority in the Trump districts in 2018. A majority of the Trump/House Democratic districts have a median household income of less than $65,000, which is also below the national median of $78,000. For Republicans, Trump has shifted their coalition to include more working-class voters and voters of color. The targets include some Trump seats that were not on this year’s battlefield, like Michigan’s 4th District, represented by GOP Rep. Bill Huizenga. Republicans, meanwhile, will try to ensure that Trump voters become reliable GOP voters, and some Republicans acknowledged those voters are not in their camp yet.

DAMASCUS, Syria — For more than a decade, Syria was synonymous with war, brutality and the family dynasty visiting this violence on its own people. It was only on Sunday that President Bashar al-Assad fled the country as rebels entered Damascus. Syrians have since torn down statues of Assad and ripped back the veil from his murderous regime. Meanwhile, questions hang over Syria’s future, guided by a former Al Qaeda offshoot that says it has moderated. But for the time being at least, the primary emotion for many in Syria is one of disbelieving joy.

How the Greenland shark can live for centuries

Ocean secretsA Greenland shark is seen swimming beneath the ice near northern Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic. Avalon.red/Alamy Stock PhotoThe rarely seen Greenland shark is a sluggish creature, slowly swimming through the deep waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. The polar fish is the only species of shark that can withstand the freezing temperatures year-round. The large sharks also live to be more than 400 years old, and some of them may have been alive since colonial times. The carcass, studied by whale scientists and members of the local Māori community, yielded precious clues about the deep-sea-diving animal.

CNN —As the winter nights grow longer, those in the Northern Hemisphere will want to keep an eye out this weekend for the last full moon of the year. Known as the long night moon or the cold moon, it’s set to reach peak illumination at 4:02 a.m. The sun, moon and Earth are on about the same plane, with the full moon occurring when Earth is between the moon and the sun as the moon orbits our planet. From Alaska to Siberia, the Arctic is changing so rapidly that there is no "normal" there now, scientists warn. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court said Friday that it will hear a case related to California's ability to set its own, often strict, vehicle emissions standards that include curbs on greenhouse gases. Due to the size of the California market, the state’s regulations hold considerable sway over vehicle manufacturers. The Obama administration granted California a waiver to regulate greenhouse gas tailpipe emissions but the first Trump administration sought to change course. The most recent EPA waiver, in 2022, prompted 17 Republican states led by Ohio and the business groups to sue. In court papers, Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar pointed out that manufacturers are already meeting the state's standards.

What could be the most important Week 15 NFL matchup isn’t a faceoff between division leaders. Yet those four teams have either already clinched playoff berths or are all but certain to. With a win, the Colts’ chances of making the playoffs would increase from 25% to 51%, according to NFL.com’s playoff probability tracker. Since 2000, there have been five seasons in which multiple rookie quarterbacks started playoff games. For Nix, that includes winning a matchup Sunday that won’t ever be confused with the schedule’s buzziest matchup — but is perhaps its most consequential.

Any shifts in the nation’s complex health care system, however, will not come easily, nor quickly, experts say. Policyholders rebelled because they felt they couldn’t access the care they needed, said Larry Levitt, executive vice president for health policy at KFF, a nonprofit health policy research group. “If you think health care costs are rough now, imagine them without constraints,” said Rodney Whitlock, vice president at McDermott+, a health care consulting group, and a former health policy adviser on the Senate Finance Committee under Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa. Health insurers, however, do at times backtrack when faced with intense blowback. However, there is now more bipartisan appetite on Capitol Hill to enact reforms, said Wendell Potter, a former Cigna executive and vocal critic of the health care industry.

Arabica coffee futures with March delivery hit a fresh intraday high of 348.35 cents per pound on Tuesday, notching their highest level in nearly 50 years. Renowned for their smooth taste and sweet flavor, arabica beans make up between 60% to 70% of the global coffee market.
