WASHINGTON, Jan 6 (Reuters) - The United States said on Thursday that it will send Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles to Ukraine to bolster Kiev's fight against Russia's invasion. What is a Bradley Fighting Vehicle? The Bradley is a tracked, medium-armored vehicle armed with a 25-mm gun. France has pledged a similar armored vehicle called the AMX-10 RC. Germany will send about 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine before the end of March.
MOSCOW, Jan 5 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin told Turkey's Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday that Russia was open to dialogue over Ukraine but that Kyiv would have to accept the loss of territories claimed by Russia, the Kremlin said. Putin also "acknowledged the destructive role of the West, pumping weapons into Kyiv, providing information and guidance," the Kremlin said. Erdogan and the Russian president have spoken repeatedly since Russian forces invaded Ukraine in February. Turkey acted as mediator alongside the United Nations to set up a deal allowing grain exports from Ukrainian ports. According to the Kremlin, Putin once again told Erdogan that all the barriers to Russian exports of food and fertilisers, which Russia sees as part of grain deal, should be lifted.
But the visit also leaves several key questions unanswered, including how U.S. military support could evolve, whether Congressional support for the war will endure and - crucially - how the war will end. Biden announced that the United States would provide another $1.85 billion in military aid, including a Patriot missile defense system. The United States and its allies have been unwilling to provide other advanced weapons Ukraine has pleaded for. The next steps for Kyiv, the officials added, would be to receive additional air defense systems from the United States and other western countries along with better integrating them. "No more blank checks to Ukraine," Republican Representative Andy Biggs wrote on Twitter hours before Zelenskiy's visit to Washington.
CNN —Brittney Griner’s freedom ultimately hinged on the release of a convicted Russian arms dealer whose life story inspired a Hollywood film. On Thursday, a source told CNN that the US basketball star had been released from Russian detention in a prisoner swap for Viktor Bout, nicknamed the “Merchant of Death” by his accuser. Viktor Bout is pictured in a temporary cell ahead of a hearing at a court in Bangkok in August 2010. Christophe Archambault/AFP/Getty Images“His early days are a mystery,” Douglas Farah, a senior fellow at the International Assessment and Strategy Center who co-authored a book on Bout, told CNN in 2010. He said that Bout graduated from the Military Institute on Foreign Languages, a well-known feeder school for Russian military intelligence.
Ukrainian avant-garde art finds refuge from war in Madrid

REUTERS/Juan MedinaMADRID, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Ukrainian art has found a refuge in Madrid where a retrospective on the country's avant-garde in the early 20th century is showing works little known to the general public while offering them a safe haven away from the bombs. Aside from paying tribute to a little-known period in the history of Ukrainian art, the exhibition takes on particular relevance amid Russia's ongoing invasion of the country. "We wanted to do something in terms of showing Ukrainian art, but also taking Ukrainian art out of Ukraine and bringing it to Europe and to safety," Katia Denysova, one of the exhibit's three curators, told Reuters. When the curators saw the works had made it to Spain safe and sound, they were "beyond delighted", Denysova added. She now hopes that Ukrainian avant-garde art will tell the public a story of creation and resistance.
Alexander Nemenov | Afp | Getty ImagesProminent supporters of Russian President Vladimir Putin are using increasingly "genocidal rhetoric" when discussing and demonizing Ukrainians, analysts note, with some pro-war commentators cheering the concept of the "liquidation" of the modern state of Ukraine. "To be a 'Ukrainian' one does not even have to speak the Ukrainian language (which is also still being formed). "All this can be stopped only through the liquidation of Ukrainian statehood in its current form," Medvedev said. Another popular motif being used by pro-war, pro-Putin bloggers is characterizing Ukraine and Ukrainians as "evil" or "sadists" or "Satanists." "As ISW has previously reported, Russian President Vladimir Putin has similarly employed such genocidal language in a way that is fundamentally incompatible with calls for negotiations."
However the talks aim to remove remaining obstacles in the initiative extended last week and ease global food shortages by unblocking Ukrainian and Russian exports, they added. Putin said on Wednesday that Russian officials would work to unblock Russian fertilisers stuck in European ports and to resume ammonia exports. The export of Russian ammonia would be via an existing pipeline to the Black Sea. Neither Russia nor Ukraine have released official figures on how many prisoners of war they have taken since Russia invaded in February. On Oct. 29, Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskiy said that since March, Russia had freed a total of 1,031 prisoners.

Russia's Feb. 24 invasion of its southern neighbour sparked calls by some Western leaders for a boycott of the G20 summit and for the withdrawal of Russian President Vladimir Putin's invitation. Russia confirmed at almost the last minute that Putin would not attend the summit with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov taking his place. Indonesia will breath a sigh of relief as the summit opens but key issues remain unresolved. "We have to make sure that Russia's war is mentioned in the G20 declaration in one way or another. A traditional G20 "family photo" of leaders also appears to be off the table this year, sources say.
Users on social media are sharing a claim that the French ambassador to Ukraine Etienne de Poncins has resigned but there’s no supporting evidence. One Facebook user sharing the claim said, “Urgent: The French Ambassador to Ukraine Resigns” (here). There is another unverified French-language Facebook account under the same name and logo that identifies as a “broadcasting & media production company” (here). Jean-Michel Cadenas, a departmental delegate of the Rassemblement National in Mayenne (twitter.com/RassNational53) repeated the claim that Poncins resigned in a since-deleted tweet. There is no evidence that Poncins ever resigned from his post as the French ambassador to Ukraine.
UNITED NATIONS, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Russia intends to raise at the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday its accusation that Ukraine is planning a "dirty bomb" attack and has urged U.N. chief Antonio Guterres to do all he can to "prevent this heinous crime from happening." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has responded by accusing Russia of planning such an attack itself to blame on Ukraine. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia wrote in a letter - seen by Reuters - to Guterres and the Security Council on Monday. "We call on the Secretary-General of the United Nations to do everything in his power to prevent this heinous crime from happening." Britain's mission to the United Nations posted on Twitter late on Monday: "Reminder: Ukraine has no nuclear weapons."

"I'm not sure whether standard tools of the IMF are really designed for this type of situation," he added. Butsa said it is talking to the World Bank about a special facility for that money, where others, including private donors, could also contribute.

Russian President Vladimir Putin attends a meeting with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan September 16, 2022. SAMARKAND, Uzbekistan, Sept 16 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin on Friday brushed off a lightning Ukrainian counter-offensive with a smile but warned that Russia would respond more forcefully if its troops were put under further pressure. Well, let's see how it develops, how it ends up," Putin said with a grin. Russia hit Ukrainian infrastructure in response - including a reservoir dam and electricity supplies - and Putin said those attacks could get worse.
