“Six-fifty yesterday morning, one of my township supervisors called me and wanted to know what I thought,” Dingell said. “That discussion brought me right back down to Earth.”Burned before by overconfidence, Democrats this cycle are running against two opponents. Huddled at their campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, the day after the debate, Harris’s campaign aides determined the event would likely do little to change the overall trajectory of the race. Campaign officials spent part of Wednesday looking through debate footage to identify moments that would make effective television ads. Gavin Newsom said on “CBS Mornings” on Tuesday ahead of the debate, rejecting the “underdog” label for Harris: “She’s not.

They were interviewed after threats about a school shooting were posted online. His father, Colin Gray, 54, is the first parent in Georgia to be prosecuted after a child was accused in a school shooting. On Wednesday, the day of the shooting, the FBI and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office released a statement noting that the teen had previously been interviewed over a school shooting threat. "She took my younger two and went back home with her momma," Colin Gray told the investigator. US Steel and Nippon Steel both indicated in statements that they’re open to legal fights to get the deal approved, no matter what actions is announced by Biden. Shares of US Steel (X) closed down 17.5% on the news at $29.37, well below the $55 a share that Nippon Steel agreed to pay for the stock back in December when the deal was announced. US Steel said the future of this and other union-represented plants at the company are at risk unless it gets approval to be purchased by Nippon Steel. US Steel says it has more than 3,000 employees in the state in its remaining steel mills along the Monongahela River just outside of Pittsburgh. The union says it doesn’t believe in the promises made by Nippon Steel so far and that it remains opposed to the purchase.

A group of Amazon delivery drivers hold a labor strike at the DAX7 Amazon Sortation Center in South Gate. Amazon should be considered a "joint employer" of some of its contracted delivery drivers, a regional director for the National Labor Relations Board said Wednesday. Amazon has fought to avoid being designated as a joint employer of its sprawling network of contracted delivery companies. Over the past year, the Teamsters has stepped up its efforts to organize Amazon delivery and warehouse workers. Since then, it's led a number of strikes at Amazon delivery facilities, while a labor group at an Amazon warehouse on New York's Staten Island opted to affiliate with the Teamsters in June.

A few weeks ago, I started asking left-leaning people their thoughts on slurs being peppered into everyday conversations. An inclusive eraKayla Cash, a 31-year-old PR manager, grew up using words she now considers offensive. Some of the language felt ubiquitous; she remembers the 2004 release of "Let's Get It Started," the Grammy-winning Black Eyed Peas hit that was originally released as "Let's Get Retarded." It was billed as discussions between two "bohemian layabouts" who called out performative aspects of progressive politics — while using language more often associated with the right, such as that offensive term for someone with intellectual disabilities. Looser language and new rulesEveryone I talked to for this story had rules for which words they would and wouldn't say.

CNN —The New York Liberty solidified their spot at the top of the WNBA standings with a 79-71 home win over the Dallas Wings at the Barclays Center on Thursday. The result made it eight victories in a row for the Liberty, who currently sit atop the Eastern Conference with a league-best 25-4 record, the team’s best start through 29 games in franchise history. The Liberty only shot 35.1% from the field as a team but still had four players score in double figures. It was a morale boosting win for New York, which became the first team to clinch a postseason berth on Saturday. Tim Walz, will roll through Pennsylvania on a bus tour Sunday, dropping in on the crucial battleground state just days before the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The pair’s first rally shortly after Walz was announced as Harris’ running mate was in Philadelphia, the commonwealth’s largest city, and they embarked on a dayslong tour of battleground states shortly after. Sunday’s tour, which is scheduled to begin in Pittsburgh, will mark the first time that Harris, Walz and their respective spouses – second gentleman Doug Emhoff and Minnesota first lady Gwen Walz – will appear on the campaign trail together. The campaign has 36 coordinated offices and 300 staffers in Pennsylvania, which Harris has already visited seven times this year. Seven battleground states have been the focus of more than $212 million in ad spending over that stretch, with Pennsylvania accounting for $70.6 million of that total.

mapodile/E+/Getty ImagesFor individual investors, the quick-turn global rout in stocks on Monday was unsettling, even with news Tuesday that there is somewhat of a bounce-back going on. But if you’re investing in a 401(k), daily market dramas are no reason to take dramatic actions with your portfolio. Andy Smith, executive director of financial planning at Edelman Financial Engines, puts it this way: “Separate your emotion from your money. Say you set up a portfolio of 70% stocks and 30% bonds but now it’s morphed into a 60/40 portfolio. On Sept. 14, 2016, the body of Kayla Cuevas was found, bludgeoned to death by members of MS-13 and left beside a house at 6 Ray Court in Brentwood. Two years later exactly, her mother, Evelyn Rodriguez, who had become a renowned anti-gang activist, was run down on Ray Court by the homeowner’s daughter. The daughter, Annmarie Drago, had grown weary of unceasing memorials near the property, prosecutors said. The prosecution of Ms. Drago followed a byzantine nearly six-year path of conviction, reversal and retrial as attention seeped away and Ms. Rodriguez’s family fell to pieces. For Kelsey Cuevas, 26, Kayla’s sister and the sole survivor of a tight triad of women, it has been a torturous ordeal with an unjust ending.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign said it raked in a whopping $310 million in its July fundraising efforts — more than double the amount raised by former President Donald Trump last month. Harris’ fundraising numbers mark the latest sign of how transformative and energizing the change to the top of the Democratic ticket has been among grassroots and high-dollar supporters. A majority of that $310 million haul, more than $200 million, was raised in the first week of Harris’ candidacy, the campaign said in a statement, with two-thirds of the fundraising coming from first-time donors to the campaign. The campaign also said it has $377 million cash on hand, while the Trump campaign has $327 million cash on hand. Read more here.

Officials quickly moved to tailor the Chicago convention to Harris with only four weeks, in part drawing from the 2008 convention when Barack Obama accepted the nomination given the historic candidacy of Harris herself. Nominee acceptance speeches for the convention, which begins the week of August 19, are currently scheduled for that Wednesday and Thursday night, according to convention officials. Hollywood gets on boardThe Hollywood community is clamoring to support Harris at the DNC, according to numerous agents, publicists and Democratic strategists who spoke to CNN. No performers have been set yet, though various representatives for musicians have been in talks with the Harris campaign, according to two sources. For instance, besides Megan Thee Stallion’s performance at her Atlanta rally earlier this week, Harris had the support of the rapper Quavo, who spoke about gun violence prevention.

The data also points a spotlight on the economic platform of Vice President Kamala Harris, who is poised to accept the Democratic presidential nomination this month amid signs of a slowing economy. But her economic views are less defined, maintaining broad references to strengthening the middle class, even as her record investigating Wall Street and her farther-left 2019 primary campaign platform have executives and investors on edge. According to those close to Harris, advisers and administration officials, Harris’ economic views were described as “pragmatic,” “centrist,” and even “pro-business,” with a goal of leveraging private-sector friendships for better outcomes at the ground level. Personnel as policyHarris has two staffers who manage economic and domestic policy issues, and she was briefed by staff on the most recent jobs data. “He is as close to Harris and the second gentleman as almost anyone in the administration,” said an official close to Harris.

CNN —As the burgeoning Kamala Harris campaign works behind the scenes to refine its policy platform, the vice president has increasingly found herself clarifying which of her positions have shifted over the years. A Harris campaign official said Monday she no longer supports a fracking ban. As vice president, Harris supported a bipartisan border bill that would have ramped up enforcement at the US-Mexico border. CNN —Kamala Harris is in the thick of choosing a vice presidential running mate, with her campaign eying an announcement in the coming days that would be immediately followed by a joint tour of a series of battleground states. Harris has not yet conducted formal interviews with the top contenders, one source familiar told CNN. As is typical in vice presidential searches, the Harris campaign has been intently focused on who could help strengthen the Harris ticket’s electoral chances. The Harris campaign declined to comment for this story. President Joe Biden will end his bid for reelection and has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. Democrats are in the process of setting up a system to conduct their presidential nomination vote remotely before the party’s convention next month. Under party rules, candidates must meet certain requirements to have their names placed into nomination to be the party’s presidential candidate. There are 3,949 pledged delegates. But now that Biden is no longer a candidate, his delegates are free to vote for whomever they’d like.

Instead, Biden’s campaign unraveled over the course of the next 24 days. It’s a high-risk, high-reward gamble for Democrats, resetting a campaign Biden was losing with a new nominee just 107 days before the election. Dunn and her husband, Bob Bauer, were among Biden’s debate prep team and had faced the ire of the president’s family in the aftermath of the debate. Several news outlets, including CNN, reported that Pelosi and former President Barack Obama had privately expressed concerns about the future of Biden’s campaign. That same day, ABC News reported that Schumer told Biden in their Saturday meeting that it would be best if he bowed out of the presidential race.

The historic endorsement came after Biden announced Sunday that he is dropping out of the race following weeks of disarray within the Democratic Party. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. Despite the president’s backing, it remains unclear whether Harris will become the nominee, or what process the Democratic Party would take to select an alternative. Dmitri Mehlhorn, a Democratic political strategist advising several big-money backers, released a statement Sunday following Biden’s withdrawal supporting Harris. After she dropped out, Harris became a prominent surrogate for Biden before being named his vice presidential pick in August 2020.
