One measure on the ballot in New York state this November means two very different things to its supporters and its opponents. Advocates of the measure argue that it is simply a way to codify New Yorkers’ right to reproductive care. The Coalition to Protect Kids-NY has taken to calling the measure the “Parent Replacement Act.” The group argues that the measure would be used to strip rights from parents and push transgender rights for minors, in particular. The coalition's website includes no articles or other information about the ballot measure seeking to codify a right to abortion. Hochul’s office has helped lead the state’s Democratic Party to spend over $1 million to advertise in favor of the measure, including local ads, campaign yard signs and mailers.

Nonfarm payrolls surged by 254,000 for the month, up from a revised 159,000 in August and better than the 150,000 Dow Jones consensus forecast. The unemployment rate fell to 4.1%, down 0.1 percentage point. Strength in job creation spilled over to wages, as average hourly earnings increased 0.4% on the month and were up 4% from a year ago. Trucking and other logistics companies are racing to get as many goods as possible out of ports before a potential strike. The vast port operations of New York and New Jersey stand to be most affected, with about 4,500 workers in the region. New York City Mayor Eric Adams will step into a Manhattan courtroom and into the history books on Friday when he is arraigned on federal corruption and bribery charges that could force him out of office. Adams is the first sitting New York City mayor to be indicted on criminal charges in the modern era. “This was a multiyear scheme to buy favor with a single New York City politician on the rise,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said Thursday. Adams' indictment capped two weeks of turmoil in his administration, a period during which Banks, the city’s police commissioner, and the city's top lawyer, have announced their resignations. “You could almost picture them trying to cobble this together and try to tell a story so that they could say, ‘corruption, corruption’ at a press conference,” Spiro said at a Thursday press conference.

Adams allegedly committed 23 different “overt acts,” which include accepting free flights and hotel rooms and coordinating straw donations. In 2017, Adams allegedly accepted free business class tickets for three roundtrip international flights and a heavily discounted stay at a suite in the St. Regis Istanbul. Adams allegedly accepted over $123,000 worth of luxury travel benefits between 2016 and 2021, without disclosing any of it. “No one is above the law, including the Mayor of New York City,” Schumer said in a written statement Thursday.
