Opinion: What comes next for women’s soccer
  + stars: | 2023-08-20 | by ( Opinion Amy Bass | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
For the first time since 2011, a new champion in women’s soccer has been crowned. Amy Bass Rodney BedsoleSpain came out swinging with vigor and poise in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final in Sydney’s Stadium Australia, spreading the field, finding gaps in England’s backline and posting early dominant possession percentages. New worldAs the seconds of extra time ticked in the final, we already knew one result: no matter who won Sunday, the exclusive club of Women’s World Cup champions was about to have a newcomer. Jamaica made history at this World Cup because of the Reggae Girlz’ prowess, supported by a viral fundraising effort, not by its own federation. Indeed, it is his job to further the game, including and perhaps especially the women’s game, and not sit and wait to be convinced by women or anyone else.

WHY WE’RE HEREWe’re exploring how America defines itself, one place at a time. A cricket complex outside Houston hosts youth and professional players alike, reflecting the sport’s growing popularity in a changing city. July 15, 2023Drive northwest out of Houston, and as cow pastures wrestle back the flat expanse from the city’s tentacled sprawl, there arise along the road, suddenly, improbably, many, many cricket fields. Head south to find a small cricket stadium nestled in the suburbs, or west to find fields sprouting in county parks. The game of cricket — a bat-ball-and-wicket contest of patience and athleticism that was born in Britain and is barely understood by most Americans — has surprisingly taken hold in the land of Friday night football.

It also doesn't offer a fair characterization of the entire S&P 500's performance. Hussman's preferred valuation measure is total market cap of non-financial stocks to total revenue of non-financial stocks. According to Bank of America, 80% of the S&P 500's returns over a 10-year period can be attributed to valuations. The red line in the chart below shows the gauge, while the blue is the S&P 500's price action. Predicted in April 2007 that the S&P 500 could lose 40%, then it lost 55% in the subsequent collapse from 2007 to 2009.

Larry Desgaines sat on a piece of cardboard atop a damp rock near the mouth of a large sewer drain in Queens on a recent Friday evening. In the water, which, improbably, did not stink of sewage, two men in a canoe sat very still. As the sun dipped behind Roosevelt Island, another man sitting by the entrance of the tunnel banged on a metal pipe with a stick. The canoe’s frontman, wearing a Tyrolean hat, yodeled: “Willkommen!” He drew out the final syllable, and his voice amplified and echoed in the tunnel. As the song ended, the canoe disappeared into the sewer, leaving only echoes behind.

Club name and Dow stock Caterpillar (CAT) was one of the leaders, soaring more than 8% and accounting for over 100 points of the 30-stock average's 700-point surge. Meanwhile, the tech darlings that have recently propelled the market higher — including top-performing Club stocks Nvidia (NVDA) and Meta Platforms (META) — took a relative backseat Friday. For that reason, it's a hopeful sign to see other sectors walk the runway in the Wall Street fashion show Friday. 'Brady Bunch' house hits the market for $5.5 million
  + stars: | 2023-05-28 | by ( Jay Croft | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
CNN —Here’s a story of an old TV house that has been redone inside like yesterday. “The Brady Bunch” house has hit the market for any fan of groovy ’70s pop culture, but it’ll take much more than a hunch to get your hands on it. The Los Angeles home, made famous by exterior shots on the blended-family sitcom, is going for $5.5 million. The purchase led to a new series, called “A Very Brady Renovation,” featuring the actors who played the kids and HGTV’s remodeling hosts. The home’s listing says it was built in 1959 and is the second-most-photographed in the country after the White House.
Since October 2022, the S&P 500 is up 17% following a 25% decline as the Fed embarked on its rate-hiking cycle. The median S&P 500 price target for the end of the year is 4,000. Predicted in 2000 that the S&P 500 would likely see negative total returns over the following decade, which it did. Predicted in April 2007 that the S&P 500 could lose 40%, then it lost 55% in the subsequent collapse from 2007 to 2009. The S&P 500, by comparison, is up 1.1% over the past year.
Opinion: A boast that could sink Trump
  + stars: | 2023-05-21 | by ( Richard Galant | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +20 min
We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. CNN —“I’m the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade,” former President Donald Trump boasted Tuesday on Newsmax. Congress has the power to rein in the court, wrote CNN legal analyst and law professor Steve Vladeck, whose new book “The Shadow Docket” focuses on the Supreme Court. Courtesy Boaz FreundIn 2019, then-President Trump issued an executive order requiring hospitals to post the prices of common medical services and procedures. For some, its celebration of a multiracial but purely fictional British aristocracy may even be a big part of its appeal.”As escapism, “Queen Charlotte” is a success.
The chart below shows how far the S&P 500 would have to fall to provide either a 10% return or 2% premium over Treasury bonds. He sees the S&P 500 finishing 2023 at around 3,150, he told YouTube channel Wealthion. Predicted in 2000 that the S&P 500 would likely see negative total returns over the following decade, which it did. Predicted in April 2007 that the S&P 500 could lose 40%, then it lost 55% in the subsequent collapse from 2007 to 2009. The S&P 500, by comparison, is up 0.8% over the past year.
And weakens the pillars that hold our nation together,” Israel’s President Isaac Herzog warned this week in a speech to Jewish groups. The legislation has plunged Israel into the largest and longest protest movement in the country’s history. Frozen peace processBut as Israel celebrates 75 years since its founding with fanfare, Palestinians mark the same event with mourning. It was during the Jewish state’s creation that more than 700,000 Palestinians were forced to flee their homes in what is now Israel. “This is the end of the era of limited conflicts,” Gallant told reporters, according to the Times of Israel.
Follow the latest news on the leak of classified intelligence documents. It sounded as if the airman, Jack Teixeira, was in a speeding car, said a member of the group who uses the screen name Vahki. “Guys, it’s been good — I love you all,” Airman Teixeira said, Vahki recounted. I prayed to God that this would never happen. And I prayed and prayed and prayed.
Hussman called the 2000 and 2008 stock market crashes. Sure, the S&P 500 is down 17% from its peak on the first day of trading in 2022, 15 months ago. But the numbers don't lie, says Hussman, who called the 2000 and 2008 stock market crashes. Wilson sees the S&P 500 bottoming between 3,000-3,300, making him one of the more bearish strategists on the Street. Predicted in 2000 that the S&P 500 would likely see negative total returns over the following decade, which it did.
At Sue Schmidt’s gas station and roadhouse off a remote highway in the Australian Outback, employees usually watch out for snakes when they are walking outside. But this week, they were looking for something else: A tiny capsule of radioactive material that sparked a search along a roughly 900-mile stretch of the road. The capsule, used in mine equipment, went missing while in transit from a Rio Tinto PLC mine to Perth, Western Australia’s state capital. As the search dragged on over the past week, Ms. Schmidt and her employees grew wary of cleaning up the bottle caps and coins that they usually find outside the roadhouse, fearing that any shiny object could be the capsule that would hit them with a dangerous dose of radiation.
There are two major driving forces of stock-market returns, according to John Hussman: valuations and investor sentiment. "Put simply, we estimate that the S&P 500 faces the same prospect of full-cycle loss and return-free risk as it did in 1929, 2000, and 2007. The S&P 500, in its current form since 1957, fell more than 46% from 2000-2002 and more than 52% from 2007-2009. Hussman FundsAs for investors sentiment — or what Hussman calls "market internals" — he uses a proprietary measure of the uniformity of investor behavior. Predicted in April 2007 that the S&P 500 could lose 40%, then it lost 55% in the subsequent collapse from 2007 to 2009.

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers about “The White Lotus” season finale, “Arrivederci.”CNN —It started with floating bodies, and finally brought home its various threads with a sly nod to the fact that the sex in this visit to “The White Lotus” tended to be transactional. In between, the second installment proved almost as engrossing, uncomfortable and meme-worthy as its Emmy-winning predecessor, which is no small accomplishment for writer-director Mike White. Tanya, however, wasn’t the only character being manipulated for money or advantage, which is what connected the show’s various threads. Discovery), but thanks to “The White Lotus,” it’s home to one of the best things on television, and as anthology-style concepts go, potentially one of the most durable. So now that everyone obsessed with the show has said “Arrivederci” to Sicily, the only real question is, “Where are we going next?”
LIMA, Peru—Peru’s Congress overwhelmingly voted to remove President Pedro Castillo from office on Wednesday afternoon, shortly after the Peruvian leader plunged this country into turmoil by announcing he would dissolve the legislature to avoid impeachment. Lawmakers declared Mr. Castillo morally unfit to hold office in a vote that will see Vice President Dina Boluarte take over as the head of state in the mineral-rich country of 33 million. It remained unclear what would happen next in a constitutional crisis that began when Mr. Castillo, a deeply unpopular former rural schoolteacher who improbably won the presidency last year, set out to avoid an impeachment vote that was to take place late Wednesday.
I Finally Found a Hat That Fits Over a Bun, Top-Knot or Updo

When I started wearing my hair in a bun virtually every day, I discovered that wearing a sun hat became…a real pain in the buns. Suddenly, the bucket hat styles that I’d loved for years either didn’t stay on my bun-topped head or looked rather ridiculous—like a lumpy Cat in the Hat. The North Face hat is made for outdoor adventures, fabricated from a durable, quick-dry recycled nylon with a perfectly-angled bucket brim with some oomph to it. The North Face name and logo comes embroidered boldly and noticeably smack-dab on the forehead, which was a little too much for me. Once I started wearing it all the time, in my Brooklyn neighborhood, I realized it was more an object of envy than ridicule.
Taste that rich filling for evidence of the Arab influence that infuses Sicilian cuisine: The candied citrus that often flavors the creamy interior remains beloved throughout the Middle East. In the 1990s, the cake became a menu star as a lava cake or molten chocolate cake. A soft, flaky dough is shaped into a plump half-moon that barely contains the sweet filling, then topped with a light blanket of powdered sugar. Variations on medovik differ widely, but the most popular takes incorporate one of two very Russian ingredients into the sweet filling.
