Five months into his tenure as CEO of Unity Software , Matt Bromberg is overseeing his first big product launch as he tries to push the company past an extended stretch of challenges. On Friday, the video game software company announced the sixth version of its flagship product, Unity Engine, a set of tools developers can use to produce games across a number of devices, including iPhones and Android phones. He previously spent almost six years as COO of mobile game company Zynga, which was acquired by Take-Two Interactive in 2022, and more than four years at Electronic Arts . James Whitehurst, former CEO of Red Hat, was serving as interim CEO until Bromberg joined. The new CEO's first big challenge was unwinding Riccitiello's decision to implement what became known as the "Unity Runtime Fee."

US efforts to produce semiconductor chips will continue regardless of who wins the election. AdvertisementNo matter who wins the presidential election this November, President Joe Biden can rest easy knowing one thing: The US's chip manufacturing push isn't going anywhere. The US has seen its share of overall chip production fall from 37% of the world's supply in 1990 to 12%. While many factories remain under construction, the federal funding has already helped boost US chip production. According to a report published last year by the trade and lobbying group Semiconductor Industry Association and Oxford Economics, the US semiconductor industry will face a shortage of 67,000 workers by 2030, including technicians, computer scientists, and engineers.

Last year, TSMC announced that the official opening of its first Arizona fab would be pushed back from 2024 to 2025. People are more aware of refurbished phones, thanks to ad campaigns and word of mouth. For $249 or 299 euros, customers could buy a refurbished iPhone or Android without knowing the model they'd get. Apple stock jumped Monday after a Wall Street firm touted the iPhone maker ahead of its quarterly earnings report. Analysts said Apple's stock may be able to advance higher on a late October earnings report that merely matches Wall Street estimates, so investors should be positioned accordingly. However, we do agree with Evercore's optimism on AI iPhone integration, and its ability to usher in an upgrade cycle for Apple's flagship device. But with our "own it, don't trade it" view still intact on Apple stock, it's acceptable for the upgrade cycle to get off to a slower start. TAIPEI — Four employees of Taiwan's Foxconn, the world’s largest iPhone assembler, have been detained in China under "quite strange" circumstances, Taiwan’s government said. "The circumstances of this case are quite strange," it said. The Mainland Affairs Council said Foxconn had stated the company had "suffered no losses and that the four employees had done nothing to harm the company’s interests." Calls to China's Taiwan Affairs Office seeking comment outside of office hours went unanswered. China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, over the strong objections of the government in Taipei.

Hurricane Milton may disrupt power and cell service in Florida. iPhone 14 and later models with iOS 18 offer satellite messaging when cell service is unavailable. Here's how to make sure your iPhone is set up to send satellite messages if Hurricane Milton topples the connectivity in your area. You can also send satellite messages via SMS to mobile numbers that aren't iPhones, but you have to message them first before their messages reach you, according to Apple's website. Still, satellite messaging can allow families to connect and let each other know they're safe during Hurricane Milton.

The iPhone 16 lacks new features and a new AI smartphone is years away, wrote analysts on Sunday. Much of the optimism surrounding Apple this year came from its June announcement of Apple Intelligence, the company's take on artificial intelligence. In Sunday's note, Lee forecasted "flattish volume growth" in the second half of 2024 for iPhone 16 compared to the iPhone 15, and only 2.5% growth in lifecycle volume for the iPhone 16. AdvertisementTo be sure, not all analysts think the delay in introducing Apple Intelligence will hurt the company. He said that he gives little credence to third-party reports of iPhone 16 sales.

Taiwan's Foxconn , the world's largest contract electronics maker, beat expectations to post its highest-ever revenue for the third quarter on strong demand for artificial intelligence servers. Revenue for Apple's biggest iPhone assembler jumped 20.2% year on year to 1.85 trillion Taiwanese dollars ($57.3 billion). "The result exceeded the company's original expectations of significant growth," Foxconn said in a statement on Saturday. Strong AI server demand led to robust revenue growth for its cloud and networking products division, said Foxconn whose customers include AI chip firm Nvidia NVDA.O. It has scheduled its annual Tech Day on Oct. 8-9, an event where Foxconn normally announces new products or partnerships.

As Apple prepares Apple Intelligence to jump into Silicon Valley’s AI race, it’s relying on one of its strongest advantages: Its army of 34 million app developers. IPhone users will get their first taste of Apple Intelligence, the company’s artificial intelligence system, later this month. The company is relying on Apple Intelligence to be the strongest selling point for the iPhone 16, its latest generation of smartphones. That’s something other company’s AI chatbots cannot currently do, and to accomplish this, Apple is beckoning its army of third-party developers to fine tune their apps to collaborate with Apple Intelligence. Another drawback is that Apple Intelligence features will only be available on the latest iPhones, a small subset of the total iPhone user base.

Apple needed the iPhone 16 to be a big seller after years of sluggish iPhone sales. In particular, demand for the higher priced iPhone 16 Pro devices were down sharply year-over-year compared with the iPhone 15 launch. Analysts say there appears to have been greater demand for the lower priced iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus devices than the Pro and Pro Max, which could affect the average selling price and overall iPhone sales revenue. In the first weekend of presales, Apple sold 9.8 million iPhone 16 Pros and 17.1 million iPhone 16 Pro Max devices, down 27% and 16% year-over-year, respectively, according to Kuo. “It’s all about a monster holiday quarter and the supercycle begins for iPhone 16 in our view,” Ives told CNN in an email.
