Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned around southwestern states this week as they sought to shore up the Latino vote with only five days until Election Day. Latino voters account for %14.7 of all eligible voters in the upcoming election, according to Pew Research Center. New Mexico, where Trump campaigned on Thursday, has the highest share of Latino voters with around 45% the population. The states with the next largest share of Latino voters include California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada. Although Democrats tend to have a historical advantage among Latino voters, that advantage has declined over the past four presidential cycles, according to a national NBC News/Telemundo/CNBC poll from September, especially as Trump makes strides with Latino men.

President Joe Biden hosted a formal ceremony Wednesday to publicly celebrate his executive order establishing an initiative to increase funding for Hispanic-serving institutions and create a board of advisors on HSIs. Flores said the executive order shows a federal understanding of how crucial HSIs are to the future of the nation. The more than 500 HSIs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico serve more than 4.7 million students every year, according to federal data. Many students are low-income, and nearly a third are eligible for Pell grants, which are federal scholarships for students in need. “The president’s executive order will strengthen these critical institutions and build their capacity to provide economic mobility for all their students.”

In today’s edition, national political correspondent Steve Kornacki breaks down the key areas where Donald Trump's standing with Puerto Rican voters will be tested. Where Trump’s support among Puerto Rican voters will be put to the testSteve KornackiDonald Trump’s campaign appearance in Allentown, Pa., this evening comes amid questions over whether the fallout from his Madison Square Garden rally will cost him support among Puerto Rican voters. Allentown is a majority-Hispanic city of 125,000, and about one-quarter of its overall population is of Puerto Rican descent — one of the highest concentrations of Puerto Ricans anywhere in the U.S. Pennsylvania’s polls will close at 8 p.m. EST on Election Night, but we may get a big clue about Trump’s Puerto Rican support before that. Majority-Hispanic Osceola County in Florida, just south of Orlando, is a large county (population about 450,000 — and growing) that’s about one-third Puerto Rican.

Ahead of Donald Trump’s Tuesday appearance in the heavily Latino city of Allentown, Pennsylvania, a comedian’s racist joke about Puerto Ricans at the former president’s Madison Square Garden rally drew fresh blowback. “However, the other five million who live in the United States, whom they also labeled as trash, can vote.”One of those five million Puerto Rican voters is Allentown resident Efraín Dávila. Hinchcliffe made his racist jokes in an election cycle in which Republicans have said they are messaging to Latinos as Americans. But the comedian at his rally attacked Puerto Ricans, who are American citizens at birth, not immigrants, said Mike Madrid, a Republican consultant who opposes Trump. Madrid added that it is more difficult to waive off the comedian’s racist jokes, because they did not come from Trump.

In Nevada, 48% of likely voters support Trump and 47% back Harris. Hispanic likely voters in Nevada split about evenly between Harris and Trump (48% support Harris, 47% Trump). In Arizona, likely voters are split over which candidate cares more about people like them (45% say Harris does, 41% Trump). The gap is even wider in Nevada, where 71% of Democratic-leaning likely voters are very confident compared with 16% of Republican-aligned likely voters. Likely voters include all registered voters in the poll weighted for their predicted likelihood of voting in this year’s election.

Consider an average of recent polling data on Hispanic voters: Kamala Harris is ahead of Trump by just 13 points. That’s well off an average of post-election and exit poll data from 2020, when Joe Biden carried Hispanic voters by 26 points. Trump lost Hispanic voters by 39 points to Hillary Clinton, according to an average of exit poll and post-election data. Trump has been doing particularly well among Hispanic men, as well as Hispanic voters without a college degree. Trump has waded into deep blue territory to boost his candidacy among Black and Latino voters. He has sought to use this issue to cut into Harris' support among the very groups she'll need to win the presidency. This includes Black voters, who for decades have overwhelmingly backed Democratic politicians, and Latino voters, who have become less Democratic as a whole in recent years. A recent GenForward survey showed that 26% of young Black men backed Trump, compared to 58% who supported Harris. During a June debate with President Joe Biden, Trump said migrants were taking "Black jobs" and "Hispanic jobs."

While Vice President Kamala Harris led Trump among Hispanic voters overall, 54% to 40%, each candidate got 47% support among Latino men, a marked difference from the 26-point lead Harris had among Latinas. “After that photo, there was controversy in the family, there was controversy with friends, but we didn’t care.”For Republican political consultant Mike Madrid, the Republican gains in Latino support especially among men are a long-term trend. Madrid, author of “The Latino Century” and co-founder of the anti-Trump super PAC The Lincoln Project, said he’s increasingly seen Latino voters become pocketbook voters. Democratic political strategist Chuck Rocha, founder of the bilingual political consulting firm Solidarity Strategies, said he disagrees with the notion that Latino men voting Republican is a sign of a long-term trend. He said he watched Harris’ interview on Fox News, but nothing she says would change his support for Trump.
